Chapter 9: The Brother’s Final Secret
The police arrested Richard Carter that night.
But somehow, that didn’t feel like the ending.
It felt like the beginning.
Because one sentence followed me everywhere.
Ask him why you survived.
For days, I couldn’t sleep.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw my father’s face.
Not the monster.
Not the criminal.
The father I remembered.
And that was the hardest part.
Because monsters are easy to hate.
But when the monster is someone you loved, you spend years arguing with yourself.
Richard was transferred to federal custody.
The evidence from the recorder changed everything.
The accounts.
The threats.
The fake accident.
The warehouse.
The truth finally had somewhere to go.
But Michael avoided one subject.
The accident.
My accident.
Three days after Richard’s arrest, I found him sitting outside my house.
The same place where he used to wait for me when we were kids.
“You’re leaving,” I said.
He looked up.
“I thought about it.””
I sat beside him.
“You owe me the truth.””
He looked away.
“I know.””
“Then tell me.””
A long silence.
Finally, he spoke.
“The night Richard tried to kill you…”
I waited.
“I was there.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
Michael nodded.
“I followed him.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew he was planning something.””
I stared.
“You could have warned me.””
“I tried.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
His eyes filled.
“Because I was too late.””
I said nothing.
“The car accident happened because Richard cut your brakes.””
My hands went cold.
“But I survived.””
Michael nodded.
“Because I was driving.””
The world stopped.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“I took your car.””
I couldn’t speak.
“The plan was for you to die.””
His voice broke.
“But I found out.””
I stared.
“Then why did everyone think I was in the accident?””
“Because Richard needed someone to disappear.””
I understood.
Slowly.
Painfully.
The coffin.
The funeral.
The body.
“You.””
Michael nodded.
“He used my accident to cover everything.””
I looked away.
All these years.
I thought I lost my brother.
But my brother had been trying to save me.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Michael looked down.
“Because Richard threatened Lily.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“He said if I contacted you, he would hurt her.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
The same weapon.
Fear.
Control.
My father had built his entire life around it.
“I should have fought harder.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I should have found a way.””
“You survived.””
“But you lost eight years believing I was dead.””
I looked at my brother.
The person I mourned.
The person I blamed.
The person who was actually protecting me.
“You were never trying to hurt me.””
He smiled sadly.
“Never.””
We sat there quietly.
For the first time in years.
Together.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman spoke.
“Mark Carter?””
“Yes?””
“My name is Detective Lauren Hayes.””
My stomach tightened.
“What happened?””
There was a pause.
“We found something in Richard Carter’s old records.””
“What?””
“Something that changes the entire timeline.””
I looked at Michael.
“What timeline?””
The detective lowered her voice.
“The day your father supposedly died.””
I stood.
“What about it?””
She hesitated.
“Mr. Carter…”
“Yes?””
“Your father did not disappear three years ago.””
My blood ran cold.
“What are you saying?””
She continued.
“He had help.””
I looked toward my house.
Toward Vanessa.
Toward the life I thought I knew.
“Who?””
The detective was silent for a moment.
Then she answered.
“The person who signed his death certificate.””
I felt the world go quiet.
“Who signed it?””
Her answer came softly.
“Your wife.””
I closed my eyes.
Not again.
Not another secret.
Not another lie.
I turned toward Michael.
He was already standing.
Because he knew.
“What?””
He looked terrified.
“Mark…”
“What?””
His voice was barely a whisper.
“She wasn’t just helping him.””
I waited.
“She was protecting him.””
A message arrived on my phone.
From Vanessa.
Only six words.
*I’m sorry. I had no choice.*
And underneath it was a photo.
May you like
A photo of her standing beside Richard.
Taken yesterday.
