Chapter 5: The Girl Upstairs

I had never been afraid of my own home before.

Not once.

The house where Lily took her first steps.

The house where Vanessa and I celebrated our anniversaries.

The house where we painted the walls together before moving in.

It had always been a place of safety.

Until that night.

Until I realized every room might be hiding something.

Every door.

Every photograph.

Every memory.

“Who is upstairs?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

My father watched me.

Waiting.

Like he wanted me to ask.

“Dad.””

His smile faded.

“Go see.””

Michael grabbed my arm.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Don’t go alone.””

Richard laughed.

“Still protecting him.””

Michael ignored him.

“Mark, listen to me.””

“No more secrets.””

I pulled away.

“No more people deciding what I can handle.””

I walked toward the stairs.

“Mark,” Vanessa whispered.

I stopped.

She looked terrified.

Not because of my father.

Because of what I was about to discover.

“Please be careful.””

I nodded once.

Then I climbed.

Each step felt heavier than the last.

The hallway upstairs was dark.

The same hallway where Lily had cried earlier.

The same hallway where I discovered the hidden room.

But now everything felt unfamiliar.

I passed Lily’s bedroom.

Then ours.

Then the guest room.

The sound came from the end of the hallway.

A soft sob.

I reached the final door.

My hand hovered over the handle.

“Who’s there?””

Silence.

Then a voice.

A child’s voice.

“Please don’t let him find me.””

My heart stopped.

I opened the door.

Inside was a girl.

Maybe twelve years old.

She sat in the corner holding an old blanket.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes wide with fear.

She looked at me like she had been waiting forever.

“Who are you?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked behind me.

“He told me you wouldn’t believe me.””

“Who?””

She whispered:

“Your father.””

The world tilted.

I stepped back.

“What is your name?””

The girl hesitated.

“Emma.””

“Emma what?””

She looked down.

“I don’t know.””

The answer confused me.

“What do you mean you don’t know?””

She touched the bracelet around her wrist.

The bracelet had a name engraved on it.

But the metal was scratched.

Only two letters were visible.

E.C.

“Where did you come from?””

She started crying.

“I don’t remember.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Why are you here?””

Before she could answer, footsteps sounded behind me.

Michael.

He appeared in the doorway.

Then he saw the girl.

And his entire expression changed.

“No.””

Emma looked at him.

“Uncle Michael?””

I froze.

“Uncle?””

Michael looked like he had seen a ghost.

“Mark, get her away from here.””

“What is happening?””

He didn’t answer.

I turned toward Emma.

“You know him?””

She nodded slowly.

“He saved me.””

Michael closed his eyes.

“Not now.””

“No,” I said.

“Now.””

I was done waiting.

Michael stepped inside.

“Mark…”

“Who is she?””

He looked at Emma.

Then at me.

“She is the reason your father killed my life.””

My chest tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Emma started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

She looked at me.

“For being alive.””

The words destroyed me.

I knelt in front of her.

“Hey.””

She looked at me.

“You don’t have to apologize.””

“She said I would ruin everything.””

“Who said?””

Her lips trembled.

“Your wife.””

I stood.

Slowly.

“What?””

Vanessa appeared behind Michael.

Her face went white.

“Emma.””

The girl immediately hid behind me.

That reaction told me everything.

“Vanessa?””

My wife looked at the floor.

“I can explain.””

I laughed quietly.

Of course she could.

Everyone could.

Everyone had explanations.

Everyone had reasons.

Everyone had secrets.

Except me.

I was the only person who lived in this house and knew nothing.

“Tell me.””

Vanessa started crying.

“I didn’t know who she was at first.””

“At first?””

She looked at Emma.

“Your father brought her here.””

Michael nodded.

“He found her after the accident.””

“What accident?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Emma whispered:

“The accident where my parents died.””

I felt sick.

“Your parents?””

She nodded.

“My father worked with Grandpa.””

Richard.

Everything led back to him.

Michael spoke quietly.

“Emma’s father discovered the same thing I did.””

“What?””

“The money.””

My mind raced.

“Why would he kill a child’s parents?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because her father kept copies.””

“Copies of what?””

Michael stared at me.

“Proof that your father wasn’t just stealing from the company.””

He took a breath.

“He was planning something much bigger.””

Before I could ask, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

Everyone stared.

I answered.

A voice spoke immediately.

A voice I recognized.

David Miller.

My father’s old partner.

“Mark.””

My grip tightened.

“Where are you?””

His voice shook.

“Listen carefully.””

“What?””

“You need to leave your house.””

“Why?””

A pause.

May you like

Then he said:

“Because Richard Carter isn’t the only person who came back from the dead.””
