Chapter 10: The Truth We Buried

I stared at the photograph until the screen blurred.

It wasn’t possible.

My mind rejected it before my heart could even react.

Vanessa stood beside Richard.

Not in the past.

Not years ago.

Yesterday.

The timestamp was clear.

The two people who had destroyed my understanding of family were standing together outside an old building on the edge of town.

Richard was alive.

Vanessa was with him.

And once again, I was the last person to know.

Michael watched my face.

“What did she send?””

I handed him the phone.

The moment he saw the picture, his expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You knew?””

His eyes lifted.

“Mark…”

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

“Don’t do that.””

“What?””

“Don’t look at me like everyone else does.””

Michael looked hurt.

“I don’t.””

“Yes, you do.””

I stood.

“Like I’m fragile. Like I can’t handle the truth.””

“That’s not what I think.””

“Then why did you keep secrets too?””

He had no answer.

Because there was no answer.

Everyone in my life had decided that protecting me meant lying to me.

My father.

My wife.

My brother.

Everyone except my daughter.

The only person who never lied was seven years old.

I grabbed my jacket.

“Where are you going?””

“To find Vanessa.””

Michael stood.

“I’m coming.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

His face tightened.

“Mark.””

“This one is mine.””

He understood.

This wasn’t about Richard.

This wasn’t about the company.

This wasn’t about old crimes.

This was about my marriage.

Fifteen years.

One house.

One daughter.

A lifetime built on trust.

And now I had to find out if any of it was real.

I found Vanessa at the place where we first met.

A small coffee shop downtown.

It was almost midnight.

The chairs were stacked.

The lights were dim.

But she was sitting by the window.

Waiting.

When she saw me, she didn’t look surprised.

“I knew you would come here.””

I stopped.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“You always came here when you needed to think.””

That hurt.

Because she still knew me.

Even after everything.

I sat across from her.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Finally, I placed my phone on the table.

The photograph was open.

Vanessa looked at it.

Then closed her eyes.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t find that.””

I laughed softly.

“You hoped?””

Her eyes filled.

“I knew it was only a matter of time.””

“Why?””

She looked outside.

“Because the truth always comes back.””

I stared at her.

“Funny.””

She looked at me.

“What?””

“Everyone in my life says that.””

I leaned forward.

“Everyone except me.””

She swallowed.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“I don’t want an apology.””

She looked down.

“I want the truth.””

A long silence.

Then she nodded.

“I owe you that.””

“Why are you helping him?””

Her fingers tightened around her coffee cup.

“Because I made a promise.””

“To Richard?””

She nodded.

“Why?””

Her eyes moved toward the window.

“Because he saved Lily.””

I froze.

“What?””

Vanessa started crying.

“Years ago, before we knew what he really was, Lily got sick.””

My anger paused.

“She was three.””

I remembered.

The hospital.

The fear.

The nights sleeping in chairs.

Vanessa continued.

“The doctors needed money for a treatment.””

“And Richard paid?””

“Yes.””

I stared.

“He used that against you.””

She nodded.

“He told me I owed him.””

My hands curled.

“He manipulated you.””

“Yes.””

“But you still helped him.””

She looked at me.

“I thought I could control the damage.””

“You couldn’t.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I couldn’t.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was ashamed.””

I looked away.

“Shame doesn’t explain eight years.””

“No.””

She wiped her tears.

“It doesn’t.””

Then she reached into her bag.

And placed an envelope on the table.

“What is this?””

“The thing Richard was afraid of.””

I opened it.

Inside was a document.

Not a copy.

An original.

My name was written at the top.

I read the first line.

*Last Will and Testament of Richard Carter.*

I frowned.

“He changed his will?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Three years ago.””

“When he supposedly died?””

“Yes.””

I continued reading.

Then I stopped.

Because one sentence changed everything.

*Upon my death, all assets and control of Carter Industries will transfer to my son, Mark Carter.*

I looked at Vanessa.

“What is this?””

“The reason he came back.””

I didn’t understand.

“He never wanted the company.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“He wanted control.””

“Of what?””

She looked at me.

“Of you.””

The words felt impossible.

“He needed you alive.””

“Why?””

“Because only you could unlock the final account.””

My heart sank.

“What account?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“The account your mother created.””

I went still.

“My mother?””

She nodded.

“Your mother knew Richard would eventually destroy everything.””

I remembered the warehouse.

The secrets.

The lies.

The woman I barely remembered.

“She left something behind.””

“What?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Proof.””

Two days later, I sat across from my father.

The man who had caused all of this.

He was behind glass.

A prisoner.

But somehow, I felt like I was the one trapped.

Richard looked older.

Smaller.

Not like the man who controlled everything.

Just a man.

“You found it.””

I stared.

“You knew.””

“I knew Vanessa would eventually give it to you.””

“You planned everything.””

He smiled faintly.

“I planned many things.””

“Why?””

His expression changed.

“Because you were always supposed to inherit it.””

“I didn’t want it.””

“I know.””

He leaned closer.

“That was why I chose you.””

I hated that I understood.

My entire life, I had been the opposite of him.

Honest.

Trusting.

Loyal.

And he believed that made me controllable.

“You destroyed everyone.””

Richard looked down.

“Maybe.””

“Maybe?””

He looked at me.

“You think I enjoyed losing my sons?””

I almost laughed.

“You locked one behind a wall.””

“I protected him.””

“You tortured him.””

His face hardened.

“You don’t understand what Michael became.””

“What?””

“A threat.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I stood.

“He was the only person who tried to save me.””

For the first time, Richard looked defeated.

Then he whispered:

“You still don’t know everything.””

I stopped.

“What now?””

He looked at me.

“Ask your brother why your mother trusted him with the truth.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Richard smiled sadly.

“Ask him why she left everything to Michael.””

My heart sank.

Because somehow, even now…

There was another secret.

That night, I found Michael sitting in the backyard.

The same place where we used to play as kids.

“You knew.””

He looked up.

“What?””

“My mother.””

His expression changed.

“What about her?””

“She left something to you.””

Silence.

Then he looked away.

“I was hoping you’d never find out.””

I sat beside him.

“I’m tired of hearing that.””

“I know.””

“Tell me.””

Michael took a deep breath.

“Your mother discovered Richard’s crimes years before I did.””

“I know.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“She discovered something else.””

“What?””

“She discovered Richard wasn’t my biological father.””

The world stopped.

“What?””

Michael looked down.

“She found out before she died.””

I couldn’t speak.

“My father was someone else.””

“Who?””

Michael looked at me.

And for the first time in years…

He looked scared.

“David Miller.””

The name hit me like a punch.

Richard’s partner.

The man in the photograph.

The man who knew everything.

I stood.

“No.””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

“That means…”

He looked at me.

“It means Richard wasn’t just hiding my death.””

My throat went dry.

“He was hiding who I really was.””

I stared at my brother.

The brother I thought I knew.

The brother who had survived hell.

And suddenly I understood.

The wall.

The lies.

The fake deaths.

The secrets.

None of it started eight years ago.

It started long before.

Before me.

Before Michael.

Before Lily.

My phone rang.

Detective Hayes.

I answered.

“Mark.””

Her voice was urgent.

“We found David Miller.””

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

A pause.

Then:

“He’s been alive this entire time.””

I closed my eyes.

“Where is he?””

The detective lowered her voice.

“He’s at the Carter family cemetery.””

My blood ran cold.

“Why?””

Another pause.

Then she said:

“Because he’s standing in front of your mother’s grave.””

I looked at Michael.

He already knew.

And then the detective said the words that ended the last lie.

“Mr. Carter…”

“Yes?””

“Your mother’s grave was opened yesterday.””

I couldn’t move.

Because after everything we had uncovered…

After all the secrets.

After all the years of believing the dead stayed buried…

I finally understood one terrifying truth.

In my family…

Nobody ever stayed dead.

May you like

And this time…

I was going to find out why.
