Chapter 7: The Wife Who Knew Too Much
I didn’t believe him.
That was the first thought that entered my mind.
Not because Michael was lying.
Because believing him meant accepting that the last person I had trusted was also part of the nightmare.
I stared at my brother.
Then at Vanessa.
My wife stood completely still.
Too still.
“Say that again.””
Michael looked at her.
“Tell him.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Michael…”
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“Not anymore.””
I looked at my wife.
“Is it true?””
The silence was unbearable.
A person can survive anger.
A person can survive pain.
But silence from someone you love feels like a confession.
“Vanessa.””
Her shoulders dropped.
“Yes.””
One word.
One word destroyed fifteen years.
My chest tightened.
“You helped him?””
She looked at me.
“I didn’t know what he was going to do.””
Michael laughed bitterly.
“You knew enough.””
“Not everything.””
“You helped him erase his identity.””
“I was scared!””
Her scream filled the hallway.
Everyone froze.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Tears ran down her face.
“I was scared,” she repeated quietly.
I looked at her.
“Of my father?””
She nodded.
“Of Richard.””
“Why?””
She looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“Because he threatened our daughter.””
My anger stopped.
Just for a second.
“What did he threaten?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Years ago, before Lily was born, I found documents.””
“What documents?””
“Proof that Richard was moving company money through fake accounts.””
Michael nodded.
“That’s what I found too.””
Vanessa continued.
“He knew I had seen them.””
She walked toward the couch and sat down.
“I thought he would just fire me from the company.””
“Your father owned the company,” I said.
“I know.””
Her voice became smaller.
“But I underestimated him.””
She looked at her hands.
“He showed me photos.””
I frowned.
“Photos of what?””
“Me.””
The room went quiet.
“Private photos.””
My stomach turned.
“He threatened to destroy my life.””
Michael’s expression hardened.
“That’s not the whole story.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You don’t get to judge me.””
“You helped him trap me.””
“I was trying to survive!””
“And what about me?””
Michael’s voice broke.
“What about eight years of my life?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I’m sorry.””
But Michael shook his head.
“Sorry doesn’t give me those years back.””
I watched them.
Two people I loved.
Both broken by the same man.
But one question remained.
“If Richard forced you,” I said slowly, “why didn’t you tell me?””
Vanessa looked at me.
Because she knew there was no answer that would save her.
“Because I thought I could fix it.””
“And?””
“I couldn’t.””
I looked toward the hidden room.
The room where my brother had spent years.
“You let me live above him.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice became colder.
“You don’t.””
I pointed upstairs.
“You watched Lily feed him.””
Vanessa started crying.
“She was the only one who had courage.””
That sentence hurt more than an excuse.
Because it was true.
My seven-year-old daughter had done what three adults failed to do.
She saw someone suffering.
And she helped.
My phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
Another message.
*You have one hour. Bring the drive to the old Carter warehouse. Come alone.*
Michael read it.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“He wants the drive because it contains evidence.””
“So?””
“So he doesn’t need me dead anymore.””
The words made my blood run cold.
“What does that mean?””
Michael looked at Vanessa.
“She knows.””
Vanessa went pale.
“Michael…”
“Tell him.””
I looked between them.
“What?””
Michael stepped closer.
“Richard didn’t bring Emma because of the drive.””
“Then why?””
“Because Emma is the last witness.””
Witness.
The word echoed.
“Witness to what?””
Michael took a breath.
“Your father’s biggest crime.””
Before I could ask, Vanessa whispered:
“The night your brother disappeared.””
I turned.
“What happened that night?””
Michael looked at the floor.
“I was supposed to meet your father.””
“Why?””
“He knew I had the files.””
“And then?””
Michael’s jaw tightened.
“He attacked me.””
I stared.
“But the accident?””
He shook his head.
“There was no accident.””
The room became silent.
“I woke up in the trunk of a car.””
Lily gasped.
I pulled her closer.
“Michael…”
“I heard them talking.””
“Who?””
“Richard.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“And her.””
My wife looked away.
“What did you hear?””
Michael’s voice dropped.
“They were discussing how to make it look like you died.””
My body went numb.
“Me?””
He nodded.
“Richard thought you knew too much.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“And she helped him.””
Vanessa started crying.
“I changed my mind.””
“When?””
“The night of the accident.””
Michael shook his head.
“You changed your mind after he failed.””
“That’s not fair.””
“No?””
He stepped forward.
“Then tell him what happened when you found me alive.””
Vanessa froze.
My heart sank.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“I found him.””
“When?””
“The night after the accident.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“You knew he survived?””
She nodded.
“I thought he was dead.””
Michael spoke quietly.
“But I wasn’t.””
Vanessa covered her face.
“When I opened the trunk, he was barely alive.””
“And?””
“I called Richard.””
My stomach dropped.
“What did he do?””
Her voice became a whisper.
“He told me to leave.””
I stared.
“And you did?””
“No.””
She looked at Michael.
“I came back.””
Michael looked away.
“Too late.””
The words hung between them.
My phone buzzed again.
This time, a video.
I opened it.
Emma sat in a dark room.
Richard stood behind her.
“Mark,” he said.
His voice was calm.
“You have thirty minutes.””
Emma looked at the camera.
“Please…”
The video ended.
I looked at Michael.
“We go now.””
He nodded.
Vanessa stood.
“I’m coming.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
Her face fell.
“I can help.””
“You already helped enough.””
The words hurt her.
But I meant them.
Then Michael grabbed his jacket.
“I’m coming.””
I looked at him.
“You sure?””
He nodded.
“I spent eight years waiting for this.””
We walked toward the door.
But before I opened it, Vanessa spoke.
“Mark.””
I stopped.
She was crying.
“There’s something else.””
I turned.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“The person who helped Richard hide everything…”
She swallowed.
“It wasn’t just me.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who else?””
May you like
Vanessa whispered:
“Your mother.””
