Chapter 4: The Night Everything Was Stolen

The gun was smaller than I expected.

That was the strangest thought that crossed my mind.

Not My father is pointing a weapon at us.

Not My entire life has been built on lies.

Not The man I buried three years ago is standing in my living room.

Just the fact that the gun looked ordinary.

Something so small had the power to erase everything.

“Dad,” I whispered.

Richard Carter stood near the doorway, his hand steady.

The same hands that had taught me how to tie my shoes.

The same hands that had held my shoulder during my wedding.

The same hands that had lowered my brother’s coffin into the ground.

Now they were holding a gun.

“Put it down,” Vanessa said.

Her voice was shaking.

My father looked at her.

“You always were emotional.””

Her face changed.

Not fear.

Anger.

“You destroyed this family.””

Richard smiled slightly.

“No, Vanessa. I protected it.””

Michael stepped in front of me.

“Mark, get Lily.””

I looked toward the stairs.

My daughter was still standing there, frozen.

She had seen too much.

Too much for a seven-year-old.

“Lily,” I said softly.

“Come here.””

She didn’t move.

Her eyes were locked on my father.

“Is Grandpa bad?””

The question broke something inside me.

Because there was no answer a child should ever have to hear.

I slowly walked toward her.

“Sweetheart…”

“No,” Richard interrupted.

Everyone froze.

My father looked at Lily.

“Your grandfather loves you.””

Lily shook her head.

“You hurt Uncle Michael.””

The smile disappeared from his face.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand.””

Her tiny voice was louder than the gun.

“He was scared.””

For the first time that night, my father looked uncomfortable.

Then his eyes moved toward Michael.

“You poisoned her against me.””

Michael laughed bitterly.

“No. She just saw what everyone else ignored.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“Still dramatic.””

I stepped between them.

“Why?””

My father looked at me.

“What?””

“Why did you do this?””

The question seemed to surprise him.

After everything.

After eight years.

After all the damage.

I still wanted to understand.

“You had everything,” I said.

“A company. A family. Respect.””

Richard lowered the gun slightly.

“You think respect is given?””

“No.””

“You think people stay loyal because they love you?””

His expression hardened.

“They stay loyal because they need you.””

I stared at him.

That wasn’t my father speaking.

That was a man who had spent his entire life calculating people.

“Michael found something,” I said.

My father’s eyes moved.

A tiny reaction.

But enough.

“What did he find?””

Silence.

Vanessa answered.

“The accounts.””

Richard looked at her.

And I saw the hatred in his eyes.

Not anger.

Hatred.

“What accounts?””

Michael spoke.

“The ones you hid.””

My father laughed quietly.

“You still don’t know when to stop.””

“You stole money from your own company.””

Richard’s face remained calm.

“You have no proof.””

Michael looked at me.

“Yes, I do.””

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small flash drive.

My father’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

“You kept it?””

Michael nodded.

“I knew one day Mark would find out.””

Richard took a step forward.

“Give me that.””

“No.””

“You have no idea what you’re holding.””

“I know exactly what I’m holding.””

Michael’s voice became stronger.

“The truth.””

My father’s finger tightened around the gun.

“Truth is a luxury people like us cannot afford.””

I almost laughed.

“People like us?””

Richard looked at me.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He stared at me for several seconds.

Then he lowered the gun.

And that somehow scared me more.

“You want the truth?””

Nobody moved.

“Fine.””

He walked toward the dining table.

“You were always the good son, Mark.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“You followed rules. You respected authority. You built a family.””

He looked at Michael.

“Your brother was different.””

Michael said nothing.

“He questioned everything.””

Richard picked up one of the family photographs.

“He thought being smart meant he deserved power.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Stop talking about him like that.””

“Why? Because he’s your brother?””

“Yes.””

Richard smiled sadly.

“That is your weakness.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

“Family.””

He placed the photograph down.

“You believed family meant forgiveness.””

He looked directly at me.

“I knew family meant control.””

The room became silent.

Then Michael said quietly:

“You murdered Mom.””

I felt the air disappear.

My father froze.

Vanessa looked at Michael.

“What did you say?””

Richard’s face changed.

Only for a moment.

But I saw it.

The mask cracked.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.””

Michael stepped forward.

“I found the records.””

“Lies.””

“You covered it up.””

“Enough.””

“You made it look like an accident.””

My heart pounded.

My mother had died when I was young.

A car accident.

That was what I had always been told.

I looked at my father.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

And that silence was the answer.

My childhood memories started rearranging themselves.

The funeral.

The rushed explanation.

The way my father never wanted to talk about her.

The way Michael used to say something didn’t feel right.

I had ignored him.

Because I trusted my father.

Richard looked at me.

“You were too young.””

I whispered:

“Was it true?””

He sighed.

“Your mother was going to destroy everything.””

My stomach turned.

“You killed her?””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

“I made a choice.””

Michael stepped closer.

“A choice that killed her.””

Richard pointed the gun at him again.

“You always were a problem.””

I grabbed Lily and moved behind the couch.

“Michael.””

He didn’t move.

“Tell him.””

My father’s voice became cold.

“Tell him what?””

Michael looked at me.

“The accident eight years ago.””

I stared.

“What about it?””

He swallowed.

“I wasn’t the target.””

The room froze.

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

Michael continued.

“You were.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

Michael looked at my father.

“He planned to kill you.””

My father didn’t deny it.

That was worse.

“Why?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because I found out he had been using your name.””

I didn’t understand.

“What does that mean?””

“It means…”

Michael took a breath.

“Everything your father built was about to collapse.””

A sound came from upstairs.

A floorboard creaking.

Everyone looked toward the second floor.

Then another sound.

A small voice.

“Daddy?””

My heart stopped.

Lily was beside me.

So who was upstairs?

My father smiled.

May you like

And said:

“You really thought your daughter was the only secret in this house?””
