Chapter 8: The Warehouse of Secrets

The old Carter warehouse had been abandoned for years.

At least that was what everyone believed.

From the outside, it looked dead.

Broken windows.

Rust-covered doors.

Overgrown weeds climbing the walls.

A place forgotten by time.

But when Michael and I stepped inside, I realized something.

Places like this weren’t abandoned.

They were waiting.

The smell hit first.

Oil.

Dust.

Old metal.

The smell of memories nobody wanted to revisit.

“Where is he?”” I whispered.

Michael looked around.

“He’ll be here.””

“How do you know?””

“Because this is where it started.””

I looked at him.

“What started?””

He didn’t answer.

We walked deeper.

Then the lights turned on.

Richard stood on the second floor balcony.

Emma was beside him.

She looked terrified.

“Mark.””

I stepped forward.

“Let her go.””

Richard smiled.

“You came.””

“Let her go.””

“You sound just like me.””

“I’m nothing like you.””

His smile disappeared.

“You will be.””

Michael stepped forward.

“You’re finished.””

Richard looked at him.

“You’re still alive because I allowed it.””

Michael laughed.

“No.””

He looked around.

“I’m alive because you failed.””

Richard’s expression darkened.

“Always arrogant.””

“Always afraid.””

The tension between them felt older than me.

Older than the warehouse.

Older than the secrets.

“Why Emma?”” I asked.

Richard looked down.

“Because she has what I need.””

“What?””

“A memory.””

Emma shook her head.

“I don’t remember.””

Richard smiled.

“You will.””

I stepped forward.

“What happened to her parents?””

Richard looked at me.

“Your brother already told you his version.””

“Tell me yours.””

He walked down the stairs slowly.

“My version is the truth.””

“Nobody believes you.””

He stopped.

“That’s because people prefer simple stories.””

He looked at Michael.

“Good brother. Bad father.””

Then at me.

“Hero son. Evil villain.””

He smiled.

“Life is not that simple.””

I clenched my fists.

“Then explain.””

Richard looked at Michael.

“Your brother found out your mother wasn’t who you thought she was.””

I froze.

“What?””

Michael looked away.

Richard continued.

“She worked with me.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“My mother hated your business.””

Richard laughed.

“She hated what I became.””

He stepped closer.

“But she was part of it.””

Michael interrupted.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Richard pointed at him.

“You know I’m right.””

I looked at Michael.

“Is it true?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

“Michael.””

He sighed.

“Your mother found out about the accounts.””

“And?””

“She tried to expose him.””

Richard smiled.

“She also helped create them.””

The world felt unstable.

Everyone had a different truth.

Everyone had pieces.

Nobody had the whole picture.

Emma suddenly spoke.

“My dad knew.””

Everyone turned.

Richard looked at her.

“Emma.””

She stepped away.

“My dad knew Grandpa was lying.””

Her voice shook.

“But he also knew my mom helped him.””

I stared.

“How do you know?””

She touched her bracelet.

“My dad recorded everything.””

Richard’s face changed.

“What?””

Emma looked at him.

“The bracelet.””

Her fingers touched the metal.

“You never found it.””

Michael rushed forward.

“Mark.””

I understood.

The bracelet wasn’t just a bracelet.

It was evidence.

Richard moved instantly.

Too fast.

He grabbed Emma.

“Give it to me.””

“No!””

I ran.

Michael ran.

Everything happened at once.

A struggle.

A scream.

The sound of metal hitting the floor.

The bracelet broke.

A tiny device fell out.

Richard stared at it.

Then panic appeared on his face.

Real panic.

For the first time.

“You have no idea what you’ve done.””

I picked up the device.

“What is this?””

Michael looked at it.

“A recorder.””

Richard went silent.

Emma started crying.

“My dad hid it before they killed him.””

The word hit me.

Killed.

Not died.

Killed.

I looked at Richard.

“You murdered them.””

He said nothing.

That was enough.

Sirens sounded outside.

Richard’s face changed.

“How?””

Michael smiled.

“Because I sent the location.””

Richard looked furious.

“You?””

“No.””

Michael looked at me.

“Your son did.””

I frowned.

“What?””

He pointed at Lily’s small phone in my pocket.

“She pressed the emergency button before we left.””

My daughter.

The smallest person in this nightmare.

The bravest one.

Richard looked toward the door.

Then back at me.

“You think this is over?””

Police lights flashed through the broken windows.

He smiled.

“Ask your brother why he never told you the last part.””

Michael froze.

I turned.

“What last part?””

Richard stepped backward.

“Ask him who really caused the accident.””

The police rushed inside.

May you like

But before they reached him, Richard whispered:

“Ask him why you survived.””
