Amused

Chapter 9: The Man Behind the Silence

Ethan stood alone in the abandoned office, holding the phone against his ear.

For several seconds, he couldn’t speak.

The rain outside hit the broken windows.

The old building creaked around him.

But none of it mattered.

Because one sentence had destroyed everything he thought he knew.

*Your father.*

Richard Walker.

The man who had taught him everything.

The man who had stood beside him at every important moment.

The man who had hugged Lily that morning and told her she looked beautiful in her pink dress.

The man who had watched Ethan walk toward the altar.

The man who had known the truth.

“No,” Ethan whispered.

Vanessa’s voice came through the phone.

“I know how it sounds.””

“No.””

“Ethan—”

“No.””

His voice grew stronger.

“You’re wrong.””

There was silence.

Then Vanessa quietly said:

“I wish I was.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

Because a part of him wanted to believe she was lying.

It would have been easier.

If Vanessa was the villain, everything made sense.

She was jealous.

She was cruel.

She had hurt Lily.

He knew how to hate her.

But his father?

That was different.

That meant the foundation of his entire life was cracked.

“How do you know?”” Ethan asked.

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“Because Rachel told me.””

“When?””

“Two days before she died.””

Ethan gripped the phone.

“Why would she tell you?””

“Because she knew I worked at the company.””

“You barely knew her.””

“No.””

Vanessa’s voice softened.

“She knew me better than you think.””

Ethan said nothing.

“I wasn’t trying to get close to you because of Rachel.””

The statement surprised him.

“What?””

“I met you because of a coincidence.””

He laughed bitterly.

“Everything about this feels like a coincidence.””

“I know.””

A pause.

Then Vanessa continued.

“Rachel found out my department was involved in hiding financial records. She confronted me.””

Ethan listened.

“I thought she was accusing me.””

“Were you involved?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

“I was scared because I knew the people responsible had power.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Rachel asked me not to.””

Ethan went still.

“She trusted you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew I was afraid too.””

The words hit him.

For the first time, Ethan wondered if he had only seen one side of Vanessa.

The worst side.

The side that hurt Lily.

But maybe there was another side.

A scared person who had made terrible choices.

A person who had still done terrible things.

Both could be true.

“What happened the night Rachel died?”” he asked.

Vanessa was silent for a long time.

Then:

“She met your father.””

Ethan looked at the photograph on the table.

“Why?””

“She had proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That he was moving company money.””

Ethan shook his head.

“My father would never.””

“Ethan.””

Her voice was gentle.

“Your father knew Rachel found out.””

“No.””

“He asked her to meet him.””

“And?””

“And Rachel believed he wanted to talk.””

Ethan stared at the old office walls.

“And then?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Then I saw the accident report.””

His stomach tightened.

“What report?””

“The first one.””

“The original?””

“Yes.””

“What did it say?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“That Rachel wasn’t the driver.””

Ethan’s breath caught.

“Who was?””

Silence.

Then:

“Richard.””

When Ethan finally left the building, the rain had stopped.

But he felt colder than before.

He drove directly to his father’s house.

He didn’t call.

He didn’t warn him.

He needed to see his face.

Richard Walker lived in a large house on the edge of town.

A place that always felt more like a museum than a home.

Everything was perfect.

The furniture.

The paintings.

The garden.

Nothing out of place.

Just like Richard liked it.

When Ethan walked inside, his father was sitting in his study.

Reading a newspaper.

Almost peacefully.

Richard looked up.

“You’re here late.””

Ethan closed the door behind him.

“Did you know?””

His father frowned.

“Know what?””

“Don’t do that.””

Richard slowly placed the newspaper down.

“What happened?””

Ethan walked forward.

“Rachel.””

The name changed everything.

Richard’s expression shifted.

Only slightly.

But Ethan noticed.

That was enough.

“You know what I found?””

Richard didn’t answer.

“I found her files.””

Silence.

“I found her recording.””

Still silence.

Then Richard sighed.

“You shouldn’t have gone looking.””

The sentence made Ethan freeze.

Not:

“What files?””

Not:

“What recording?””

Not:

“I don’t know what you mean.””

Just:

You shouldn’t have gone looking.

Ethan felt something inside him break.

“You knew.””

Richard looked away.

“Ethan.””

“You knew.””

His father stood.

“I was trying to protect this family.””

Ethan laughed.

“Protect?””

“Yes.””

“You let me believe Rachel died in an accident.””

“She did.””

“No.””

His voice shook.

“She died because of you.””

Richard’s face hardened.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

“I made a mistake.””

The honesty shocked Ethan.

Richard continued.

“One mistake.””

“A mistake?””

“Yes.””

“You killed my wife.””

“I did not kill Rachel.””

The anger in his voice surprised Ethan.

For a second, he sounded offended.

Like the accusation itself was unfair.

“I lost control of the car.””

Ethan stared.

The words were worse than a confession.

Because they were real.

Richard sat down.

“I was driving.””

The room became silent.

“Rachel was going to expose everything.””

“Everything?””

“The company.””

“The money?””

“Yes.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You destroyed her because of money?””

“No.””

Richard looked at him.

“Because I thought I was saving everyone.””

Ethan felt sick.

“There were other ways.””

“Yes.””

Richard looked down.

“I know.””

For the first time, he looked old.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just a man who had spent years carrying a secret.

“You should have told me.””

“I wanted to.””

“When?””

“Every day.””

Ethan laughed.

“You had three years.””

“I had Lily.””

The mention of his daughter made Ethan stop.

Richard continued.

“I knew if I told you, I would lose you.””

“You should have.””

“I know.””

The answer was quiet.

Honest.

And somehow that made it worse.

Ethan turned away.

“You let me mourn someone you took from me.””

“I loved Rachel.””

Ethan looked back.

“Don’t say that.””

“I did.””

“You don’t get to.””

Richard’s eyes filled.

“She was going to destroy everything I built.””

“And so you destroyed her.””

A long silence followed.

Then Richard said:

“There’s something you don’t know.””

Ethan didn’t respond.

“Rachel wasn’t only investigating me.””

“What?””

“She found someone else involved.””

Ethan frowned.

“Who?””

Richard looked toward the window.

“Someone closer than you think.””

Ethan felt a chill.

“Who?””

Richard looked back at him.

“Someone who knew about the accident.””

The room went quiet.

“Someone who helped hide it.””

Ethan’s heart raced.

“Who?””

Richard hesitated.

Then said:

“Your mother.””

Ethan froze.

“My mother died ten years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then how?””

Richard’s expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Because Rachel found evidence that your mother’s death wasn’t what you were told either.””

Ethan stared at him.

The impossible had become possible too many times.

First Rachel.

Then Vanessa.

Then Richard.

Now his mother.

His entire life felt like a story someone else had written.

Before he could ask another question, his phone rang.

Megan.

He answered immediately.

“What happened?””

Her voice was urgent.

“Ethan, you need to come back.””

“Why?””

“I found the complete file.””

“Rachel’s?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

A pause.

Then:

“At home.””

Ethan frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Megan’s voice dropped.

“It was hidden in Lily’s room.””

His blood ran cold.

“My daughter’s room?””

“Yes.””

“Who put it there?””

Another pause.

Then Megan whispered:

“Someone who knew exactly where you would never look.””

Ethan looked at his father.

Richard looked terrified.

May you like

And for the first time, Ethan realized the truth was not buried in the past.

It had been living beside him the entire time.
