Amused

Chapter 5: The File That Changed Everything

The garden lights flickered above us as Ethan held the phone against his ear.

Nobody spoke.

Not the guests.

Not the staff.

Not even Vanessa.

For the first time all day, she looked uncertain.

Because whatever she thought she knew, she hadn’t expected this.

Ethan’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“Megan, slow down.””

I watched his face carefully.

Every emotion passed through him in seconds.

Confusion.

Fear.

Disbelief.

Then something I had never seen before.

Hope.

A dangerous kind of hope.

The kind people feel when they’ve spent years accepting a painful truth and suddenly wonder if it was all a lie.

“What do you mean the report was changed?”” Ethan asked.

The woman on the other end spoke quickly.

I couldn’t hear every word, but I could hear enough.

“Original copy.””

“Hospital records.””

“Someone removed pages.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

His hand tightened around the phone.

“No.””

A pause.

Then quieter:

“No, that’s impossible.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“What is she saying?””

Ethan ignored her.

“Megan, where are you?””

Another pause.

Then his expression changed.

“You’re outside?””

My heart jumped.

Outside?

Outside where?

A few seconds later, Ethan ended the call.

The entire garden waited.

Finally, he looked at me.

“Claire.””

I stepped closer.

“What happened?””

He looked at Lily first.

She was still holding my hand, her pink dress covered with stains from the cake.

The same child who had only wanted to give her father a piece of cake had somehow become the center of a nightmare.

Ethan knelt down.

“Sweetheart, Aunt Claire is going to stay with you for a few minutes.””

Lily frowned.

“Where are you going?””

“I need to talk to someone.””

“Are you leaving?””

The fear in her voice almost broke him.

“No.””

He immediately shook his head.

“Never.””

She studied his face.

Children notice things adults think they hide.

She noticed his worry.

She noticed his sadness.

She noticed the way his hands were shaking.

“Promise?””

Ethan swallowed.

“I promise.””

Only after she nodded did he stand.

Then he turned toward the garden entrance.

And there she was.

Megan.

Rachel’s older sister.

She stood near the gate holding a worn brown folder against her chest.

I hadn’t seen her in years.

Not since Rachel’s funeral.

She looked exhausted.

Like she had been carrying something heavy for a long time.

Ethan walked toward her.

“You found it?””

Megan nodded.

“I found what was left of it.””

“What does that mean?””

She looked at the crowd.

Then at Vanessa.

Her eyes narrowed.

“Did I come at a bad time?””

Nobody answered.

Because there was no way to explain what had happened.

Not simply.

Not in one sentence.

Megan looked at Lily.

Her expression softened.

“Oh my God.””

She covered her mouth.

“Is that Lily?””

Ethan nodded.

“She’s older now.””

Megan’s eyes filled.

“She looks just like Rachel.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“Can we focus on why you’re here?””

Everyone turned.

Megan looked at her.

“And you are?””

“Vanessa.””

Megan’s expression changed slightly.

“Ah.””

That single sound carried a lot.

Ethan noticed.

“You know her?””

Megan looked down.

“No.””

Then she looked back at Vanessa.

“But I know what she’s been looking for.””

The air changed.

Vanessa’s face became guarded.

“What does that mean?””

Megan held up the folder.

“It means you weren’t the first person trying to find this file.””

Ethan looked between them.

“What are you talking about?””

Megan sighed.

“I was hoping I wouldn’t have to explain it today.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“Explain what?””

“That Rachel was investigating something before she died.””

Ethan froze.

“What?””

Megan looked at him.

“She never told you?””

“No.””

“She was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Megan opened the folder.

Inside were copies of documents.

Handwritten notes.

Photographs.

Emails.

Ethan stared.

“What is all this?””

“Rachel’s research.””

I watched his face.

Because this wasn’t just new information.

It was a completely different version of the woman he had loved.

Megan looked at the papers.

“Rachel believed someone was hiding money from a company she worked with.””

Ethan frowned.

“She was an accountant.””

“I know.””

“She checked financial records.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Megan hesitated.

“She found something she wasn’t supposed to find.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

Megan looked at her.

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa’s voice became sharper.

“You’re showing up at a wedding with old papers and making accusations?””

Megan didn’t react.

“I’m showing up because someone tried to erase what Rachel discovered.””

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

“Why do you know about this?””

Vanessa immediately answered.

“I don’t.””

But the speed of her answer made everyone notice.

Megan looked at Ethan.

“You should ask her how she found the accident report.””

Silence.

Ethan turned.

Slowly.

Toward Vanessa.

“What does she mean?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“Vanessa.””

“I said I don’t know.””

Megan interrupted.

“She contacted someone connected to Rachel’s investigation two months ago.””

Ethan looked shocked.

“What?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Megan, you don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“Oh, I do.””

Megan pulled out another paper.

“A request for archived documents.””

Ethan took it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“You requested these?””

Vanessa said nothing.

That was answer enough.

The guests began whispering.

Again.

But this time, the whispers weren’t about the wedding.

They were about Vanessa.

“Why would you look into Rachel?””

Ethan asked.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Because I was trying to understand your past.””

“You lied.””

“I didn’t lie.””

“You hid this.””

She looked frustrated.

“Because I knew you wouldn’t listen!””

There it was.

The same excuse.

Every secret.

Every decision.

Every boundary crossed.

Always because Ethan supposedly wouldn’t listen.

Megan shook her head.

“You don’t understand what you found.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Rachel wasn’t just investigating money.””

Megan looked at Ethan.

“She was investigating a person.””

The garden went still.

Ethan stared.

“Who?””

Megan lowered her voice.

“She never wrote the name down completely.””

“Why?””

“Because she was scared someone would find it.””

Ethan looked at the papers.

“Then how do we know?””

Megan reached into the folder.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“This was hidden behind a photograph frame in Rachel’s apartment.””

Ethan took it.

His hands were unsteady.

“Why didn’t you give me this before?””

Megan looked away.

“Because I didn’t find it until last week.””

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Only a few lines.

I watched as Ethan read it.

His expression changed.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

He couldn’t.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Ethan?””

He looked up.

And for the first time, he wasn’t looking at her with anger.

He was looking at her with suspicion.

The kind that changes everything.

“Why was your name written in Rachel’s notes?””

Vanessa went completely still.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Ethan.

Then at Vanessa.

“What?””

Ethan held up the letter.

At the bottom of the page was a name.

A name Rachel had written before she died.

Vanessa.

Vanessa’s face lost all color.

“That’s impossible.””

Ethan’s voice was quiet.

“Why would my dead wife have your name?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

No words came out.

And that was when I realized something.

The wedding had never been about cake.

It had never been about jealousy.

It had never even been about Lily.

Vanessa hadn’t entered Ethan’s life by accident.

She had known something.

She had been searching for something.

And now we were finally discovering what.

Then Ethan turned the page over.

On the back was one final sentence written in Rachel’s handwriting.

A warning.

May you like

One sentence that made Ethan’s hands begin to shake.

“Do not trust the woman who says she loves you.””
