Amused

Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden in the Last Page

The garden remained silent as Ethan stared at the final page.

I had never seen him look that way before.

Not angry.

Not shocked.

Just completely betrayed.

Lily was still in his arms, her face resting against his shoulder. She was too young to understand the tension surrounding her, but she knew enough to know that something was wrong.

“Daddy?””

Ethan blinked.

He immediately folded the paper.

“I’m okay, sweetheart.””

But he wasn’t.

Everyone could see it.

Vanessa stood a few feet away, watching him carefully.

She wasn’t crying anymore.

She wasn’t apologizing.

She was waiting.

Waiting for the page to do what she had brought it there to do.

I stepped closer.

“Ethan, what is it?””

He didn’t answer.

His eyes stayed fixed on Vanessa.

“What is this?””

Vanessa tilted her head.

“You tell me.””

His expression hardened.

“You knew about this?””

“I found it.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

The guests shifted uncomfortably.

Nobody wanted to leave.

Not because they enjoyed the drama.

Because they had become witnesses to something far bigger than a ruined wedding.

They had watched a bride hurt a child.

Now they were watching the reason behind it.

Vanessa took a breath.

“I was trying to protect myself.””

Ethan laughed quietly.

“Protect yourself from what?””

“From losing everything.””

I felt a chill.

There it was again.

Everything was always about Vanessa.

Even now.

Even after Lily had been the one crying on the ground.

Ethan looked down at the page again.

“What exactly were you planning to do with this?””

Vanessa didn’t respond immediately.

That pause told us more than any answer could.

“You were going to use this after the wedding,” Ethan said.

Her silence confirmed it.

I looked at her.

“What were you going to use?””

Vanessa turned toward me.

“Don’t pretend you’re innocent, Claire.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“You’ve never liked me.””

“That’s not true.””

“It is.””

Her voice grew stronger.

“You saw me as someone who was replacing Lily’s mother.””

The words hung there.

Because there was a small piece of truth buried inside them.

Ethan’s late wife had left behind a space nobody could fill.

But nobody had asked Vanessa to replace her.

She had been asked to love Lily.

There was a difference.

Ethan looked at the page again.

“Answer my question.””

Vanessa swallowed.

Then she said quietly,

“I was going to use it if I needed to.””

“If you needed to?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

Her eyes moved toward Lily.

And my heart sank.

“You were going to take my daughter away from me.””

Lily lifted her head.

“What?””

Ethan immediately held her closer.

“No, baby.””

But Vanessa kept talking.

“I wasn’t trying to hurt her.””

“You brought legal documents to our wedding.””

“Because you refused to listen.””

Ethan’s voice became colder.

“You were preparing for a fight before we even got married.””

“I was preparing for reality.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You were preparing for control.””

The guests remained quiet.

I could see some people looking down, embarrassed.

Others looked angry.

Vanessa noticed.

And she hated it.

She hated that the room no longer belonged to her.

She had spent months designing this day.

The flowers.

The dress.

The decorations.

The photographs.

But none of those things mattered anymore.

Because the person she wanted everyone to admire was now the person everyone was questioning.

She pointed at the paper.

“You want to know what’s on that page?””

Ethan said nothing.

“It’s a report from a counselor.””

His face changed slightly.

A counselor?

I looked at him.

“You never mentioned Lily seeing one.””

“Because she didn’t,” Ethan said.

Vanessa smiled.

“She did.””

“No.””

“She did after her mother died.””

Ethan went still.

I saw it.

A memory.

A painful one.

Because that was a difficult time for all of them.

Lily had been three years old when her mother died.

She stopped talking for weeks.

She stopped sleeping through the night.

She would wake up crying, asking when Mommy was coming home.

Ethan had taken her to a child therapist.

Not because something was wrong with Lily.

Because he wanted to help her process losing her mother.

Everyone knew that.

Or at least they should have.

Vanessa held up the page.

“The counselor wrote that Lily has attachment issues.””

Ethan stared at her.

“She was grieving.””

“She also wrote that Lily becomes extremely distressed when separated from her primary caregiver.””

“Me.””

“Yes.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Exactly.””

She stepped closer.

“And now you’re about to marry someone new. Someone she sees as a threat.””

The way she said it made my skin crawl.

Because she wasn’t describing a child’s fear.

She was using it as a weapon.

Ethan’s voice was quiet.

“She was scared of losing me because she already lost her mother.””

“And what happens when she never lets go?””

Ethan stared at her.

“What?””

“When she keeps controlling you?””

That was when I finally understood.

Vanessa didn’t see Lily’s pain.

She saw Lily’s love as something taken away from her.

She had mistaken a father protecting his child for a child manipulating her father.

Ethan looked at the paper one last time.

Then he tore it.

Slowly.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The sound echoed through the garden.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“You’re destroying evidence.””

“No.””

He dropped the pieces onto the table.

“I’m destroying the excuse you used to justify hurting a little girl.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“You don’t understand.””

“No, Vanessa.””

His voice was firm.

“I understand perfectly.””

Lily touched his face.

“Daddy?””

He looked at her.

“What?””

“Are you still getting married?””

The question broke everyone.

Because that was what mattered to her.

Not the guests.

Not the money.

Not the wedding.

Just whether her family was still going to be okay.

Ethan looked at his daughter for a long moment.

Then he glanced at Vanessa.

The woman he had planned to spend his life with.

The woman who had promised to love his child.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart.””

Lily’s eyes widened.

“Why?””

Ethan kissed her forehead.

“Because I should have seen things sooner.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“Ethan.””

He ignored her.

“I should have protected you before today.””

Lily wrapped her arms around him.

“I don’t want you to be sad.””

His eyes filled slightly.

“I know.””

A few guests quietly wiped their eyes.

Even the photographer lowered his camera.

This wasn’t entertainment anymore.

It was a family breaking apart.

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Ethan, don’t do this.””

He looked at her.

“Do what?””

“Throw away everything because of one mistake.””

“One mistake?””

Her face tightened.

“Yes.””

He looked around at the ruined cake.

At the guests.

At Lily’s stained dress.

“At what point does a mistake become a choice?””

Vanessa had no answer.

Because she knew.

Everyone knew.

Ethan took Lily’s hand.

Then he started walking away.

But before he reached the garden exit, Vanessa spoke again.

This time, her voice was different.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Desperate.

“You think I’m the only one hiding something?””

Ethan stopped.

I felt everyone freeze.

Vanessa looked directly at him.

“You never told Lily the truth about her mother.””

Ethan slowly turned around.

The air disappeared from the room.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“I know what happened the night your wife died.””

Ethan’s face went pale.

Because whatever Vanessa was about to reveal…

It wasn’t about Lily’s behavior.

It wasn’t about the wedding.

May you like

It was about a secret Ethan had buried for three years.

And somehow, Vanessa had found it.
