Chapter 6: The Woman in Rachel’s Final Warning
For a long moment, nobody moved.
The sentence written in Rachel’s handwriting seemed to hang in the air.
*Do not trust the woman who says she loves you.*
Ethan stared at the paper as if the words might rearrange themselves into something else.
Something less painful.
Something that made sense.
But they didn’t.
They stayed exactly the same.
Vanessa.
The woman who had stood beside him moments before their wedding.
The woman who had promised forever.
The woman who had smiled in photographs with Lily.
The woman whose hands had pushed cake into a little girl’s face.
I watched Ethan’s fingers tighten around the letter.
“Explain.””
His voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
Vanessa looked around.
For the first time all day, she looked genuinely afraid.
“Ethan…”
“No.””
He looked at her.
“Explain.””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know why Rachel wrote that.””
“Your name is on the page.””
“I don’t know why.””
“Megan said you searched for these files.””
“I was trying to understand.””
“Understand what?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
And that silence said more than an answer.
Ethan stepped back.
The distance between them suddenly felt enormous.
A few hours ago, they had been standing at an altar promising to spend their lives together.
Now they looked like strangers.
“Did you know Rachel?””
Vanessa’s eyes moved away.
That was the moment I knew.
She did.
Maybe not well.
Maybe not in the way Ethan feared.
But she knew something.
“Vanessa,” I said slowly, “did you ever meet her?””
She looked at me.
Then at Ethan.
“I…”
Ethan’s face hardened.
“Tell me the truth.””
The irony wasn’t lost on anyone.
The same man she had accused of hiding the truth was now begging her to give it.
Finally, Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.””
A wave of shock moved through the crowd.
Ethan stared.
“When?””
“Before.””
“Before what?””
“Before you knew me.””
His expression changed.
“Where?””
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
“I worked at the same company Rachel was investigating.””
The words hit him.
“What?””
“I didn’t know her well.””
“But you knew her.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Vanessa looked defensive again.
“Because I knew you would react like this.””
“Like what?””
“Like I was hiding something.””
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“You were.””
She looked away.
Megan stepped closer.
“What department?””
Vanessa frowned.
“What?””
“What department did you work in?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Finance.””
Megan’s face changed.
Ethan noticed.
“What?””
Megan looked at him.
“That’s where Rachel found the irregularities.””
The garden became colder.
Even though the evening air was warm.
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
“You worked in the same department?””
“Yes.””
“And you never mentioned it?””
“I didn’t think it mattered.””
“It mattered.””
His voice cracked slightly.
“It mattered because my wife was investigating something connected to you.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. You’re making assumptions.””
Megan opened the folder.
“Then let’s not assume.””
She pulled out another document.
“This is Rachel’s timeline.””
Ethan took it.
I watched his eyes move across the page.
His face slowly changed.
“What is it?””
Megan answered.
“Dates.””
“Dates of what?””
“Rachel’s investigation.””
Ethan read silently.
Then he looked up.
“Vanessa left the company three weeks after Rachel reported the issue.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I resigned.””
“Why?””
“Because I wanted a different job.””
“Convenient.””
Her eyes flashed.
“Are you accusing me?””
“I’m asking questions.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You’re looking for someone to blame.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Today I watched you hurt my daughter.””
Vanessa went silent.
“Do you really think I’m going to ignore this now?””
The guests slowly began leaving.
One by one.
The wedding was disappearing.
The flowers remained.
The decorations remained.
The cake remained.
But the celebration was gone.
A waiter quietly removed untouched plates from the tables.
The musicians packed away their instruments.
The perfect wedding Vanessa wanted people to remember was becoming a scene everyone would talk about for a completely different reason.
I stayed.
Because Ethan needed someone.
And because Lily needed someone too.
She sat on a nearby chair, holding the small drawing she had made for Vanessa.
She hadn’t let go of it.
That broke my heart.
She still didn’t understand.
She still wanted a family.
I sat beside her.
“Hey.””
She looked at me.
“Is Vanessa mad at me?””
My chest tightened.
“No, sweetheart.””
“But she hurt me.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Children deserved honesty.
But they also deserved protection.
“She made a bad choice.””
Lily looked down at the drawing.
“I wanted her to like me.””
“I know.””
“Daddy said families can be new.””
I swallowed.
“He was right.””
She traced the little figures with her finger.
“I made her one.””
I looked at the picture.
Three people holding hands.
A child’s version of a happy ending.
A dream that had lasted until today.
Across the garden, Ethan and Vanessa were still arguing.
But something had changed.
Vanessa was no longer defending herself.
She was attacking.
“You’re really going to believe Rachel over me?””
Ethan stared at her.
“Rachel is dead.””
The words hurt everyone.
Especially him.
“But she left evidence.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“She left confusion.””
“No.””
Ethan held up the letter.
“She left a warning.””
“About me.””
“Yes.””
The honesty in his answer shocked even Vanessa.
She stepped closer.
“You really think I’m capable of hurting you?””
Ethan didn’t answer immediately.
That was worse.
Because before today, the answer would have been no.
Now he wasn’t sure.
Vanessa noticed.
Her face fell.
“I loved you.””
Ethan looked away.
“I believed you did.””
The sentence destroyed whatever confidence she had left.
Because he didn’t say he loved her.
He said he believed she did.
A difference that couldn’t be repaired.
Suddenly, Megan’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Then her expression changed.
“What?””
She answered.
“Hello?””
She listened.
Then her eyes moved toward Ethan.
“What happened?”” he asked.
Megan covered the phone.
“It’s the police department.””
Everyone went quiet.
“Why?””
She hesitated.
“They found another copy of Rachel’s report.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Where?””
Megan’s face was pale.
“In the evidence storage room.””
“Why would it be there?””
She looked at him.
“Because it was submitted the night Rachel died.””
Ethan frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Megan swallowed.
“It does if someone tried to make it disappear afterward.””
The words sent a chill through me.
Ethan looked toward Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not offended.
Terrified.
And that was the first time I wondered if Vanessa wasn’t just hiding information.
Maybe she was afraid of someone else too.
Megan ended the call.
“There’s more.””
Ethan waited.
“The officer said the report has one additional note.””
“What note?””
Megan looked at the paper in her hand.
Then she said:
“Rachel wrote that she had discovered who was responsible.””
Ethan’s face went pale.
“Who?””
Megan looked down.
“She never wrote the full name.””
“Then how do we know?””
Megan turned the paper around.
At the bottom was a single letter.
A letter written three times.
Like Rachel had started writing a name.
Then stopped.
*V.*
*A.*
*N.*
Ethan stared.
Vanessa took a step back.
But before anyone could say another word, Ethan’s phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
His face changed when he read it.
Because the sender claimed to be the last person who saw Rachel alive.
May you like
And they wanted to meet Ethan alone.
Tonight.
