Chapter 2: The Paper She Never Wanted Him to See
The document trembled slightly between Vanessa’s fingers.
For a moment, nobody moved.
The music had stopped.
The waiters stood frozen with trays of untouched champagne.
The guests who had been whispering only seconds earlier now watched in complete silence, waiting to see what could possibly come after a bride had humiliated a child in front of everyone.
Ethan held Lily tighter against his chest.
His eyes never left the paper.
“What is that?”” he asked.
Vanessa took a small step forward.
Her expression had changed completely.
The anger was gone.
The confidence was gone.
Now she looked like someone who had prepared a speech and was desperately hoping people would believe it.
“Something I found out about Lily.””
My heart sank.
I stepped closer.
“Vanessa, whatever you think you found—”
She cut me off.
“Claire, stay out of this.””
Her voice was sharp.
Not embarrassed.
Not guilty.
Defensive.
That told me everything.
Ethan reached out his free hand.
“Give me the paper.””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she handed it to him.
Lily lifted her head from Ethan’s shoulder.
“Daddy?””
He looked down immediately.
“I’m right here, sweetheart.””
“Am I in trouble?””
The question hit harder than anything else that had happened.
Ethan’s face softened.
“No.””
He kissed her forehead, carefully wiping away some frosting from her hair.
“You’re not in trouble.””
Vanessa watched the moment.
And instead of looking ashamed, she looked frustrated.
Like the sight of Ethan comforting his daughter was proof of something she wanted to deny.
I watched Ethan unfold the document.
His eyes moved across the page.
At first, he looked confused.
Then concerned.
Then angry.
Not the loud kind of anger.
The quiet kind.
The kind that made everyone around him uncomfortable.
“What is this?”” he asked.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“It’s proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That Lily needs help.””
A few guests exchanged looks.
I felt my hands tighten into fists.
“Help?”” I repeated.
Vanessa looked at me.
“Yes. Help.””
Then she turned back to Ethan.
“I’ve been trying to tell you for months, but you refuse to listen because you’re too emotional when it comes to her.””
Ethan looked back at the paper.
“This is a school behavior report.””
“Yes.””
“You brought this to my wedding?””
“I brought it because you needed to see the truth.””
The truth.
That word bothered me.
People always used that word when they wanted their version of a story to sound like the only version.
Ethan looked at Lily.
His daughter was still hiding against him.
Her little shoulders shook every few seconds.
“What exactly are you accusing my daughter of?””
Vanessa sighed.
“As usual, you’re making me the villain.””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew she was avoiding the question.
She looked around at the crowd.
“She has tantrums. She cries when she doesn’t get what she wants. She manipulates people.””
I felt anger rise in my chest.
“She’s five.””
Vanessa ignored me.
“She knows how to make Ethan feel guilty. She knows if she cries, he’ll do anything.””
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“Enough.””
The single word stopped her.
But only for a moment.
“You think I’m cruel because I’m trying to set rules,” Vanessa said.
“But one day you’ll thank me.””
Ethan stared at her.
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
“No, I won’t.””
A nervous murmur moved through the guests.
Vanessa blinked.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“You didn’t set a rule today.””
He looked at Lily.
“You hurt my daughter.””
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
“I didn’t hurt her.””
Everyone heard the lie.
Everyone saw the cake still covering Lily’s face.
“I was trying to teach her a lesson.””
Ethan’s expression changed.
“You think smashing cake into a child’s face is a lesson?””
“She wouldn’t listen!””
“She wanted to give me cake.””
“She wanted attention!””
“She wanted to make me happy!””
His voice echoed across the garden.
Lily flinched.
Ethan immediately lowered his voice.
“Sorry, sweetheart.””
He rubbed her back.
“I’m not mad at you.””
The contrast was painful.
The little girl who had been treated like a problem was now being protected like the most important person in the world.
And Vanessa noticed.
She noticed that nobody was on her side.
That the guests weren’t looking at Lily with judgment.
They were looking at her.
She looked at Ethan with disbelief.
“So that’s it?””
Ethan frowned.
“What?””
“You’re choosing her.””
The words made everyone uncomfortable.
Because there should never have been a choice.
A father choosing his child was not a betrayal.
But Vanessa said it like it was.
Ethan stared at her.
“She’s my daughter.””
“I know that.””
“No. I don’t think you do.””
For the first time, Vanessa’s confidence cracked.
“Ethan—”
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I need to understand something.””
He looked at the document in his hand.
“You’ve been collecting reports about Lily?””
Vanessa said nothing.
“How long?””
“Ethan—”
“How long?””
She looked away.
That was the answer.
My stomach turned.
Ethan looked back at the paper.
“You went to her school?””
“I was trying to be involved.””
“You went without telling me?””
“Because you wouldn’t listen!””
A few guests gasped quietly.
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“You talked to my daughter’s teachers behind my back?””
“I was trying to protect our future.””
“Our future?””
His laugh was short and humorless.
“You mean the future where my daughter feels unwanted in her own home?””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“There it is.””
“What?””
“You always make me the bad person.””
“No.””
Ethan looked at her.
“You did that yourself.””
The words landed harder than a shout.
Vanessa looked around, realizing she had lost control of the room.
Then she changed tactics.
Her voice became softer.
More emotional.
“Ethan, I love you.””
Nobody responded.
“I’ve tried so hard to become part of this family.””
She looked at Lily.
“I just wanted her to respect me.””
Lily slowly lifted her head.
Her eyes were red.
“I do respect you.””
The tiny voice cut through the crowd.
Everyone looked at her.
Vanessa stared.
Lily continued.
“I called you Mommy because Daddy said I should try.””
Ethan closed his eyes briefly.
I saw the pain on his face.
Lily wiped her cheek.
“I made you a picture for today.””
“What picture?”” Ethan asked gently.
She pointed toward the gift table.
“In the envelope.””
Nobody moved.
Then Ethan carried Lily over to the table.
There were dozens of wedding gifts stacked neatly.
Among them was a small pink envelope with a drawing of three people holding hands.
I knew immediately what it was.
Lily’s gift.
Her way of welcoming Vanessa.
Ethan opened it carefully.
Inside was a child’s drawing.
A house.
A sun.
Three smiling figures.
Above them, written in shaky handwriting:
“MY NEW FAMILY.””
The garden went silent again.
Vanessa looked at the drawing.
For a second, something almost like regret appeared on her face.
Then it disappeared.
Because instead of apologizing, she said the one thing nobody expected.
“She made that because she knew you would choose her.””
I felt a chill.
Ethan slowly looked up.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa realized too late.
She had revealed what she truly thought.
Not that Lily was a child who needed love.
Not that she was struggling.
But that she was competition.
“I didn’t mean—”
“Yes, you did.””
Ethan placed the drawing back into the envelope.
His hands were shaking.
Not from anger.
From heartbreak.
“I spent three years teaching my daughter that family means love.””
He looked at Vanessa’s wedding dress.
“At some point, I forgot to ask myself if you believed the same thing.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Ethan, please.””
But he stepped back.
The ring on her finger suddenly looked like a mistake.
The guests watched as he carefully picked up Lily.
Then he turned toward the exit.
A wave of whispers followed.
“Ethan.””
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“You’re leaving me?””
He stopped.
But he didn’t turn around.
“I’m leaving the person who hurt my daughter.””
The crowd went silent.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
Then, suddenly, she smiled.
A small, cold smile.
Because she knew something Ethan didn’t.
Something hidden inside that document.
“You should read the last page before you walk away.””
Ethan froze.
Slowly, he looked down at the papers again.
There was one page he hadn’t seen.
A page folded behind the school report.
He opened it.
And as his eyes scanned the words, the color drained from his face.
Because the document wasn’t just about Lily.
May you like
It was about Ethan himself.
And Vanessa had been planning to use it against him all along.
