Amused

Chapter 8: The Bloodline That Was Never His

Darkness swallowed the mansion.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The only sound was Daniel’s breathing.

Fast.

Unsteady.

The words repeated inside his head.

*I am your real father.*

Alexander Vale stood in the darkness like a ghost from a life Daniel never knew existed.

A man he had spent years believing was nothing more than his father’s old business partner.

A man he had been taught to distrust.

A man now claiming to be the person who gave him life.

Daniel’s hand curled into a fist.

“You’re lying.””

Alexander didn’t react.

“I expected you to say that.””

“Because you know nobody would believe you.””

“No.””

Alexander stepped closer.

“Because Richard made sure you never would.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Don’t talk about my father.””

Alexander gave a cold smile.

“Why? Because you still think he was a good man?””

The words struck a nerve.

Daniel remembered his father’s lessons.

The strict rules.

The endless pressure.

The constant reminder that the Whitmore name mattered more than anything.

He remembered being a child sitting across from Richard at the long dining table.

His father had looked at him and said:

“A Whitmore never shows weakness.””

Daniel hated that he still remembered those words.

“Where is Emma?””

Alexander looked at him.

“Still the only thing you care about.””

“She’s my daughter.””

Alexander tilted his head.

“Is she?””

Daniel moved forward.

“Don’t.””

The single word carried warning.

Alexander stopped.

For a moment, the old man’s expression changed.

Not fear.

Something closer to respect.

“You have Richard’s anger.””

Daniel said nothing.

“And Isabella’s heart.””

The name caught him.

“Don’t mention her.””

“Why?””

Alexander’s voice became quieter.

“Because you don’t even know who she was.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Tell me where Emma is.””

“First, you deserve the truth.””

“I don’t want your truth.””

“No.””

Alexander looked around the mansion.

“You want the truth your family spent twenty-five years burying.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“Alexander, this ends now.””

Everyone looked at her.

Alexander laughed softly.

“Victoria Caldwell.””

Her face hardened.

“You used me.””

“No.””

Alexander smiled.

“You used yourself.””

Daniel looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria looked away.

Alexander answered.

“She came to me five years ago.””

Daniel froze.

Victoria immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Alexander continued.

“She wanted Sarah gone.””

Daniel turned slowly.

“Victoria?””

Tears appeared in her eyes.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“Did you go to him?””

Silence.

That was enough.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You did.””

Victoria’s voice broke.

“I didn’t know who he really was.””

Alexander smiled.

“Everyone says that.””

Victoria looked at him.

“You told me Sarah was dangerous.””

“And you believed me.””

“I thought I was protecting Daniel.””

Alexander looked amused.

“You always wanted to be the hero.””

Daniel felt something inside him break.

The woman he planned to marry.

The woman he trusted.

The woman who had stood beside him for years.

She wasn’t just hiding a secret.

She had been part of one.

“Victoria.””

She looked at him.

“I was scared.””

“You were scared?””

His voice trembled.

“My daughter was five years old and you were scared?””

“I thought I was saving you.””

“From what?””

She couldn’t answer.

Daniel looked away.

He couldn’t even recognize her anymore.

Alexander walked toward the fireplace.

Behind it was an old painting of the Whitmore family.

Richard.

His wife.

Young Daniel.

A perfect image.

Alexander stared at it.

“Your father built this family like a fortress.””

Daniel watched him.

“And you wanted to destroy it.””

Alexander shook his head.

“No.””

He looked back.

“I wanted what was taken from me.””

“What?””

“My daughter.””

The room became silent.

Alexander looked at Sarah.

“Isabella was my daughter.””

Sarah’s face changed.

“My mother?””

Alexander nodded.

“She was brilliant.””

Sarah stared at him.

“You knew her?””

“I raised her.””

“No.””

The word came out like a whisper.

“You disappeared.””

Alexander’s expression changed.

“I was forced to.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“By my father?””

Alexander looked at him.

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

Daniel felt anger rising.

“Why?””

“Because Richard knew Isabella would inherit everything.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

Alexander looked at the painting.

“Before Richard became your father, before the Whitmore empire became what it was, there was an agreement.””

“Between who?””

“Between Richard and me.””

Alexander’s voice became bitter.

“We built the company together.””

Daniel looked confused.

“My father said you betrayed him.””

“Your father said many things.””

Alexander walked toward the hidden vault.

“He wanted complete control.””

“And Isabella?””

“She discovered the truth.””

Sarah whispered:

“What truth?””

Alexander looked at her.

“That Richard had changed the company records.””

Daniel froze.

“What records?””

“Ownership records.””

The pieces began falling into place.

“The company…”

Alexander nodded.

“Was never entirely his.””

Daniel stared.

“He stole it?””

Alexander didn’t answer directly.

“He erased my name.””

Silence.

Then Alexander looked at Daniel.

“And when Isabella tried to expose him, Richard took her away from me.””

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.

“You’re saying my mother was forced to disappear?””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at the documents.

The letters.

The names.

Everything suddenly felt connected.

But one thing still bothered him.

“Why didn’t you come back?””

Alexander’s expression darkened.

“Because Richard threatened the one thing I cared about.””

“Isabella?””

Alexander looked at Sarah.

“No.””

A pause.

“Your mother.””

Daniel froze.

“My mother?””

Alexander nodded.

“Richard knew I loved her.””

The mansion became silent.

Daniel felt like he was standing inside someone else’s life.

A life hidden beneath his own.

A sound came from upstairs.

Everyone turned.

A small voice.

“Daddy?””

Daniel’s heart stopped.

“Emma!””

He ran.

The others followed.

At the top of the stairs stood Emma.

Holding her teddy bear.

Crying.

Daniel rushed to her.

He lifted her into his arms.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded against his shoulder.

“He didn’t hurt me.””

Daniel looked behind her.

No one.

“Who brought you here?””

Emma pointed.

“Grandpa.””

Daniel froze.

“Grandpa?””

The little girl nodded.

“He said he knew Daddy before Daddy knew himself.””

Everyone looked at Alexander.

The old man stood at the bottom of the stairs.

Watching.

Daniel held Emma tighter.

“Stay away from her.””

Alexander stopped.

“I never wanted to hurt her.””

“You kidnapped her.””

“I protected her.””

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

Alexander looked at Emma.

“She has your eyes.””

Daniel stepped between them.

“She’s not part of your war.””

Alexander’s expression became serious.

“No.””

He looked at Daniel.

“She’s the reason the war ends.””

Later, after Alexander was taken into custody by the mansion security team, Daniel sat in the study with Emma sleeping beside him.

The night felt endless.

Sarah sat across from him.

Neither spoke for several minutes.

Finally, Daniel broke the silence.

“Is he telling the truth?””

Sarah looked down.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel looked at the documents.

“My entire life might be a lie.””

Sarah’s voice softened.

“But you are not.””

He looked at her.

“What?””

“You are not the lies people told you.””

Daniel looked toward Emma.

“She deserves better.””

Sarah nodded.

“She does.””

A quiet moment passed.

Then Daniel noticed something.

A folded paper sticking out of the box from the vault.

He pulled it out.

Another letter.

Not from his father.

From Isabella.

His hands shook.

Sarah saw the name.

“My mother.””

Daniel opened it.

The first sentence made both of them freeze.

*Daniel, if you are reading this, then you have finally learned what Richard tried to hide.*

Sarah covered her mouth.

The letter continued.

*There is one thing you must know about Alexander.*

Daniel kept reading.

Then his expression changed.

Because the next words destroyed everything Alexander had claimed.

*He is not your father.*

Sarah looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel read the final lines.

*Your real father is still alive.*

And below it was a name.

A name neither of them expected.

A name that connected every betrayal, every lie, and every missing piece.

May you like

*Richard Whitmore was not the man who raised you.*

*He was the man who stole you.*
