Chapter 7: The Child Hidden Before His Birth
Daniel read the letter again.
Then again.
The words refused to change.
*The child you believe is yours is not the only child I kept from you.*
His father’s handwriting stared back at him.
A message from a dead man.
A warning from a past he never knew existed.
Daniel stood frozen in the hidden vault, surrounded by decades of family secrets.
Behind him, Sarah waited.
Victoria waited.
Even Lily waited.
Everyone wanted answers.
But Daniel was the one who had to open the door.
He looked at the letter.
Then at the box of documents.
“What else did my father hide?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel turned.
“Someone better start talking.””
Victoria stepped forward slowly.
“I knew about the vault.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Of course you did.””
Her eyes filled with shame.
“I didn’t know what was inside.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because if I knew, I would have told you.””
Daniel almost laughed.
“After everything you hid?””
Victoria lowered her head.
“I know how it looks.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“You know exactly how it looks.””
Sarah stepped between them.
“Daniel.””
He looked at her.
“This isn’t the time.””
She nodded.
“You’re right.””
Her eyes moved to the letter.
“Find out what your father was hiding.””
Daniel looked back down.
He opened the envelope again.
Inside was another page.
A list.
Names.
Dates.
And one name circled in red ink.
Sarah Bennett.
His heart stopped.
“Sarah.””
She moved closer.
“What?””
He showed her.
The color disappeared from her face.
“My name…”
“Why would my father have your name?””
Sarah stared at the paper.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel looked at Victoria.
“Do you?””
Victoria was silent.
That was enough.
Daniel’s anger returned.
“Victoria.””
She closed her eyes.
“I know some of it.””
“Some?””
She swallowed.
“Your father investigated Sarah’s family years ago.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed they were connected to something he lost.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What did he lose?””
Victoria whispered:
“An heir.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Victoria looked at him.
“Daniel…”
“My father had me.””
“Yes.””
“Then why would he need another heir?””
Victoria looked toward the documents.
“Because he believed the Whitmore name was bigger than one person.””
Daniel felt disgusted.
His father had never seen family as family.
Only as legacy.
Only as power.
He looked at the documents again.
“What is Sarah’s connection?””
Nobody answered.
Then Sarah spoke.
“My mother.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What about her?””
Sarah’s voice trembled.
“She always told me there were things about our family she couldn’t explain.””
“Like what?””
“She had old photographs.””
“Of?””
Sarah looked at him.
“Your father.””
Daniel froze.
The hidden vault became a room of ghosts.
Daniel opened every document.
Financial records.
Private letters.
Old photographs.
Evidence of a family war nobody knew existed.
Then he found another envelope.
This one was addressed to Alexander Vale.
His hands tightened.
“He wrote to him.””
Victoria stepped closer.
Daniel opened it.
The letter was dated twenty-five years earlier.
*Alexander,*
*You were my brother in everything except blood.*
Daniel stopped.
His father had called Alexander his brother.
Not partner.
Not friend.
Brother.
The letter continued.
*But you crossed a line that can never be forgiven.*
Daniel’s eyes moved faster.
*The child must remain hidden.*
His breathing changed.
Sarah noticed.
“What?””
Daniel looked up.
“The child.””
Everyone went silent.
He continued reading.
*If she is found, the Whitmore family will collapse.*
Victoria whispered:
“Who?””
Daniel kept reading.
Then he found a name.
A name that made him drop the paper.
“Isabella.””
Sarah frowned.
“Who is Isabella?””
Daniel looked at her.
“I don’t know.””
But Victoria did.
Her face had gone completely white.
“You know her.””
Daniel turned.
“Who is Isabella?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
“Victoria.””
She sat down.
“She was your father’s daughter.””
The words landed.
Again.
Another hidden child.
Another secret.
Daniel stared.
“My father had a daughter named Isabella.””
Victoria nodded.
“Yes.””
“Where is she?””
Victoria looked at him.
“She died.””
“When?””
“Twenty years ago.””
Daniel looked back at the letter.
“But my father wrote about hiding her.””
Victoria’s voice became quiet.
“Because he didn’t want anyone to know she existed.””
“Why?””
Victoria hesitated.
“Because Isabella was Alexander’s daughter too.””
The room went silent.
Daniel felt the truth coming together.
His father.
Alexander.
Isabella.
Sarah.
Emma.
A family tree built on secrets.
Sarah whispered:
“My mother…”
Everyone looked at her.
She stared at the documents.
“Her name was Isabella.””
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“What?””
Sarah looked up.
“My mother’s name.””
She shook her head slowly.
“My mother wasn’t Sarah Bennett.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What are you saying?””
“She changed her name.””
“Why?””
Sarah’s voice broke.
“Because she was running.””
Daniel looked at Victoria.
Victoria looked terrified.
“You knew.””
Victoria shook her head.
“Not everything.””
“But you knew enough.””
Sarah looked at Daniel.
“My mother never told me who my father was.””
A painful silence.
Then Daniel asked:
“Alexander?””
Sarah nodded.
“I think so.””
The room went still.
Daniel looked at the letter.
The hidden child.
The missing daughter.
The family secret.
Everything connected.
But one question remained.
“Why does Alexander want Emma?””
Sarah answered quietly.
“Because Emma is the only person left who can prove his claim.””
Daniel frowned.
“Claim to what?””
Sarah looked at the Whitmore documents.
“The company.””
A loud crash came from downstairs.
Everyone froze.
Daniel immediately moved toward the door.
Another sound.
Glass breaking.
Someone was inside.
Victoria whispered:
“He came back.””
Daniel looked at her.
“How?””
She didn’t answer.
The security alarm should have stopped him.
The guards should have protected the house.
But Daniel already knew.
The mansion had never been safe.
Not tonight.
Not for years.
He moved carefully through the hallway.
Sarah followed.
“You shouldn’t go alone.””
Daniel looked at her.
“He has my daughter.””
“I know.””
“Then you know I’m going.””
They reached the main staircase.
The lights flickered.
A figure stood in the darkness below.
Daniel stopped.
The man slowly stepped forward.
Older than the photographs.
Gray hair.
Calm eyes.
A face Daniel had seen his entire childhood.
Alexander Vale.
He was holding Emma’s teddy bear.
Daniel’s entire body went cold.
“Where is my daughter?””
Alexander smiled.
“Still asking the wrong question.””
Daniel walked down one step.
“Where is Emma?””
Alexander looked at the teddy bear.
“She’s safe.””
“You expect me to trust you?””
“No.””
Alexander looked amused.
“I expect you to understand.””
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“Understand what?””
Alexander stepped into the light.
“Your father spent his life hiding the truth from you.””
He looked toward Sarah.
“And she spent hers protecting it.””
Then he looked back at Daniel.
“But neither of them told you the most important part.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“What?””
Alexander smiled.
“The reason Richard Whitmore feared me…”
He paused.
“…was because he knew I was your real father.””
The world stopped.
Nobody moved.
Daniel stared at him.
The words made no sense.
Couldn’t make sense.
Alexander continued:
“And Emma?””
He lifted the teddy bear slightly.
“She isn’t the first child they hid from you.””
Daniel felt his heart pounding.
Alexander’s final words echoed through the mansion.
May you like
“She’s the second.””
Then the lights went out.
