Chapter 2: The Call From The Woman Who Disappeared

The phone kept ringing.

Five years of silence.

Five years of unanswered questions.

Five years of believing that Sarah Bennett had walked away from him without looking back.

And now her name was glowing on the library phone screen.

Daniel stared at it as if the letters themselves were impossible.

Sarah Bennett.

The woman everyone told him had left.

The woman he had spent months trying to find.

The woman who had vanished just when he was beginning to believe she might be the only person in his life who truly saw him.

Nobody spoke.

Not Victoria.

Not the maid.

Not even the little girl standing near the doorway.

The ringing continued.

Finally, Daniel reached for the phone.

But before his fingers touched it, Victoria grabbed his arm.

“Daniel, don’t.””

He looked down at her hand.

Slowly, she released him.

“Why?”” he asked.

Victoria’s lips trembled.

“Because you don’t know what she’s going to say.””

Daniel stared at her.

“And you do?””

Victoria looked away.

That was the answer.

He picked up the phone.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a woman’s shaky breath came through the line.

“Daniel?””

His entire body went still.

He knew that voice.

Even after five years.

Even after all the anger.

Even after all the lies.

He knew her.

“Sarah?””

On the other end, a quiet sob escaped.

“You found her.””

Daniel looked toward Emma.

The little girl was still watching him.

“You knew?””

Sarah was silent.

“You knew I had a daughter?””

Another pause.

Then:

“I knew you had a daughter because she’s ours.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The words hurt more than he expected.

Not because they were a surprise.

Because they were true.

“Where are you?””

“I can’t tell you.””

His jaw tightened.

“Sarah, I think you owe me an explanation.””

“I know.””

“Five years, Sarah.””

“I know.””

“My daughter grew up without me.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

And for the first time, Daniel heard something beneath the distance.

Pain.

Real pain.

Not the cold rejection Victoria had described.

Not the woman who supposedly wanted nothing to do with him.

This was someone who had been carrying a burden alone.

“Why?”” Daniel asked.

The question came out quieter than he intended.

“Why did you leave?””

The line went silent.

Then Sarah whispered:

“Because I was trying to keep Emma alive.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

Before Sarah could answer, Victoria stepped closer.

“Daniel, give me the phone.””

He turned away.

“No.””

Victoria’s face changed.

“Please.””

“No.””

The little girl looked between them.

“Daddy?””

Daniel immediately softened.

He looked down at Emma.

“I’m here.””

She smiled slightly.

It was such a small thing.

But it almost broke him.

A smile from a daughter who had waited five years for him.

Sarah heard the child’s voice through the phone.

“Is that Emma?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes.””

A shaky breath.

“Let me talk to her.””

Daniel looked at the phone.

Then at the little girl.

“Emma?””

The child looked up.

“Who is it?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then answered honestly.

“Your mother.””

Emma’s eyes widened.

“Mommy?””

She reached for the phone.

Daniel lowered himself and handed it to her.

“Hello?””

A small smile appeared on Emma’s face.

“Mommy, I found him.””

Daniel’s heart tightened.

Found him.

Not met him.

Not saw him.

Found him.

Like she had been searching her whole life.

“I’m sorry,” Sarah whispered.

Emma frowned.

“Why are you sorry?””

“Because things were supposed to be different.””

The little girl looked at Daniel.

Then back at the phone.

“Daddy looks sad.””

Daniel looked away.

Sarah’s voice became softer.

“He has every right to.””

Emma held the phone with both hands.

“Mommy…”

“Yes?””

“Can Daddy come home with us?””

The question was innocent.

Simple.

But it hit everyone in the room.

Victoria looked like she had been slapped.

Daniel looked at the little girl he had never known existed.

And suddenly he understood something painful.

Emma wasn’t asking for money.

She wasn’t asking for a mansion.

She wasn’t asking for a wealthy father.

She was asking for the one thing five years had taken from her.

A family.

Daniel gently touched her shoulder.

“Emma…”

Before he could finish, Sarah spoke.

“Daniel, listen carefully.””

Her tone changed.

The sadness disappeared.

Fear returned.

“You need to leave that house.””

Daniel looked around.

The Whitmore mansion had never felt unsafe before.

But now every hallway seemed darker.

“Why?””

“Because Victoria knows I called.””

Daniel turned.

Victoria immediately looked away.

His eyes narrowed.

“How would you know that?””

Sarah didn’t answer.

“Daniel, you need to take Emma and go somewhere private.””

“Sarah.””

“Do not argue with me.””

The urgency in her voice surprised him.

“I spent five years making sure nobody could find us.””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Who?””

A long pause.

Then Sarah whispered:

“The same person who made me disappear.””

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at Victoria.

She was crying.

But this time, he didn’t know whether it was guilt or fear.

“Who was it?”” he asked again.

Sarah’s voice became barely audible.

“I can’t say over the phone.””

“Then tell me where you are.””

“I can’t.””

“Sarah—”

“Daniel.””

The way she said his name stopped him.

It sounded like goodbye.

“Please. For Emma.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Tell me where to go.””

“I’ll send you an address.””

The call ended.

Daniel stood there holding the phone.

The silence afterward felt heavier than the conversation.

Then Victoria spoke.

“You hate me now.””

Daniel looked at her.

He wanted to say yes.

He wanted to say no.

But the truth was more complicated.

“I don’t know what I feel.””

Victoria wiped her tears.

“I loved you.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“People who love someone don’t take five years away from them.””

Victoria flinched.

The words landed.

Hard.

Emma walked closer to Daniel and took his hand.

The small gesture surprised him.

He looked down.

“Are you really my daddy?””

Daniel knelt.

“Yes.””

“How do you know?””

The question almost destroyed him.

Because he realized he had no proof.

No memories.

No bedtime stories.

No photographs.

Nothing except a bracelet and a feeling.

But somehow, he knew.

“Because when I saw you,” he said softly, “I felt like I had been missing you my whole life.””

Emma smiled.

“Mommy said you would say something like that.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Emma looked confused.

“She said you talk like that when you’re trying not to cry.””

A painful silence followed.

Sarah knew him.

Still.

Even after everything.

Daniel stood.

Then he noticed something.

The maid who had revealed the truth was no longer near the wall.

She was standing by the doorway.

Watching Victoria.

And Victoria was watching her.

There was something between them.

Something unfinished.

Daniel looked at the maid.

“What’s your name?””

The young woman lowered her head.

“Lily.””

“Lily, why did you tell me?””

Victoria immediately interrupted.

“Daniel, don’t.””

He ignored her.

“Why?””

Lily looked terrified.

But she answered.

“Because I couldn’t keep lying anymore.””

“Who told you to lie?””

Lily’s eyes moved toward Victoria.

Daniel followed her gaze.

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

“Victoria.””

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Victoria stepped backward.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“From what?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then the mansion lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone looked up.

A second later, Daniel’s phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

His stomach tightened.

He opened it.

There was a photograph attached.

A picture of Emma.

Taken earlier that evening.

Outside the garden.

Someone had been watching her.

Below the image were five words:

*You should have left her hidden.*

Daniel’s face changed.

He looked around the room.

Someone inside the mansion knew.

Someone had been following his daughter.

Someone had been waiting for him to discover the truth.

Emma squeezed his hand.

“Daddy?””

Daniel immediately locked the phone.

“It’s okay.””

But he knew it wasn’t.

Not even close.

Then another message appeared.

This time, there was no picture.

Only a name.

A name that made Victoria cover her mouth in horror.

Because Daniel had spent five years believing this person was gone forever.

The message said:

*Ask Victoria what happened to Sarah five years ago.*

May you like

And underneath it:

*Ask her what she did to Emma’s real mother.*
