Amused

Chapter 3: The Woman Behind The Lie

Daniel read the message three times.

Not because he couldn’t understand the words.

Because he couldn’t accept them.

*Ask Victoria what happened to Sarah five years ago.*

His fingers tightened around the phone.

The mansion suddenly felt unfamiliar.

The paintings on the walls.

The expensive furniture.

The endless rooms filled with family history.

Everything that had once represented success now felt like a carefully decorated cage.

Emma was still holding his hand.

A small hand.

A hand that should have been holding his years ago.

Daniel looked at Victoria.

For the first time, he wasn’t looking at his fiancée.

He was looking at a stranger.

“Who sent this?””

Victoria’s face had gone pale.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I’m not.””

“You knew Sarah was afraid.””

Victoria swallowed.

“I knew she was unstable.””

The moment the words left her mouth, Daniel’s expression changed.

“Unstable?””

Victoria immediately realized her mistake.

“Daniel, that’s not what I meant.””

“You spent five years telling me she abandoned me.””

“I thought she did.””

“No.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You didn’t think.””

Victoria looked at him.

“You decided.””

Silence filled the library.

Lily lowered her eyes.

Emma hugged her teddy bear tighter.

Daniel noticed.

The child was watching adults destroy each other, and he hated that she was already learning what betrayal looked like.

He turned away from Victoria.

“Emma needs to rest.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“Daniel, please.””

He stopped.

“I need you to tell me the truth.””

“I will.””

“Now.””

Victoria looked toward the door.

Then toward Lily.

Then back at him.

“I can’t explain everything here.””

Daniel gave a cold smile.

“That’s convenient.””

“Someone is threatening us.””

“Someone who knows what happened five years ago.””

Victoria said nothing.

And that silence answered more than words could.

Daniel walked toward the library entrance.

“I’m taking Emma upstairs.””

Victoria followed.

“Daniel.””

He turned.

“What?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I never wanted this to happen.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Then why did it?””

She had no answer.

That was becoming a pattern.

The guest bedroom had been prepared for Emma within minutes.

The staff moved quickly, bringing blankets, pajamas, and toys from the mansion’s storage rooms.

Daniel watched everything from the doorway.

Everyone was trying to make the little girl comfortable.

But he knew comfort wasn’t what she needed.

She needed years back.

Years of birthdays.

Years of bedtime stories.

Years of being told she was loved by both parents.

He sat beside her on the bed.

Emma looked around the room.

“It’s bigger than my whole apartment.””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“You don’t have to stay here if you don’t want to.””

She looked at him.

“Can I ask something?””

“Anything.””

“Are you mad at Mommy?””

Daniel froze.

Children had a way of asking the questions adults spent years avoiding.

“I’m hurt.””

“Because she didn’t tell you about me?””

“Yes.””

Emma looked down.

“She was scared.””

Daniel studied her face.

“How do you know?””

“Because Mommy cries when she thinks I’m asleep.””

His heart tightened.

“What does she say?””

Emma played with the edge of her blanket.

“She says she’s sorry.””

“For what?””

The little girl looked up.

“For making you hate her.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he realized something.

Sarah had never told Emma that he abandoned her.

She had never poisoned her against him.

Even after everything.

She had protected his image.

That hurt more.

Because it meant Sarah had suffered alone while keeping his daughter’s heart safe.

A knock came at the door.

Daniel stood.

It was Lily.

“Mr. Whitmore?””

“Yes?””

“Can I speak with you?””

Daniel looked at Emma.

“I’ll be right back.””

Emma nodded.

As he stepped outside, Lily closed the door carefully.

“You know something,” Daniel said.

Lily looked nervous.

“Yes.””

“Then start talking.””

She took a deep breath.

“Five years ago, Sarah worked here.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“She worked at the mansion?””

Lily nodded.

“Only for a short time.””

“Why?””

“Mrs. Caldwell hired her.””

Daniel frowned.

“Victoria hired Sarah?””

“Yes.””

The pieces began moving.

Slowly.

Dangerously.

“Why would Victoria hire the woman she later claimed wanted nothing to do with me?””

Lily looked away.

“Because she wanted Sarah close.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“Why?””

Lily’s hands trembled.

“Because Victoria wanted to know if Sarah was pregnant.””

The hallway became silent.

Daniel stared at her.

“She knew?””

Lily nodded.

“She knew before you did.””

His jaw tightened.

“How?””

“I overheard them arguing.””

“When?””

“After Sarah found out she was pregnant.””

Daniel felt anger rising.

“What did Victoria say?””

Lily hesitated.

Then whispered:

“She told Sarah that you would never choose her.””

Daniel’s eyes darkened.

“And Sarah?””

“She said she didn’t want anything from you. She only wanted you to know about the baby.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

That sounded like Sarah.

It sounded exactly like her.

“What happened after that?””

Lily looked toward the staircase.

“Victoria found out Sarah planned to tell you.””

“And?””

“She stopped her.””

“How?””

Lily became quiet.

Daniel stepped closer.

“How?””

The maid swallowed.

“She told Sarah that if she went to you, Emma would never be safe.””

Daniel felt his blood run cold.

“Victoria threatened her?””

Lily didn’t answer directly.

But she didn’t need to.

Then Daniel noticed something.

A bruise on Lily’s wrist.

The same wrist that had held the bracelet.

He looked at it.

“Where did you get that?””

Lily quickly covered it.

“It’s nothing.””

“Lily.””

She looked down.

“Mrs. Caldwell grabbed me earlier because she thought I was going to tell you.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“She hurt you?””

“No.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Lily stayed silent.

And that was enough.

Downstairs, Victoria stood alone in the library.

She stared at the phone on the desk.

Her reflection appeared in the dark window.

For years, she had convinced herself she had done the right thing.

That she had protected Daniel.

That she had protected their future.

But now the truth was standing upstairs.

A five-year-old girl with Daniel’s eyes.

A living reminder of everything she had tried to bury.

The library door opened.

Victoria turned.

“Daniel.””

He entered slowly.

The warmth he once carried around her was gone.

“Who was Sarah running from?””

Victoria looked away.

“I don’t know.””

“Wrong answer.””

“Daniel—”

“No more lies.””

His voice echoed through the room.

“No more protecting yourself.””

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“You think I’m the villain.””

“I think I don’t know who you are.””

That hurt her more than anger.

Because it was true.

Daniel looked at the phone.

“Someone knows what happened.””

Victoria said nothing.

“Who?””

“I can’t tell you.””

His expression hardened.

“Can’t?””

She shook her head.

“Won’t?””

A tear fell.

“Daniel…”

“Tell me.””

Victoria sat down.

For the first time that night, she looked genuinely afraid.

“Five years ago, Sarah discovered something.””

“What?””

“She found out there was someone inside your company stealing money.””

Daniel frowned.

“That has nothing to do with Emma.””

“It does.””

“How?””

Victoria looked at him.

“Because the person she discovered was someone powerful.””

Daniel stared.

“Who?””

Victoria’s hands shook.

“He knew Sarah was going to tell you.””

“Who?””

Victoria whispered:

“Your father’s old business partner.””

Daniel froze.

“My father’s old partner died years ago.””

Victoria looked up.

“No.””

The room went silent.

“He didn’t.””

Daniel felt a cold wave move through him.

“What are you saying?””

Victoria’s voice dropped.

“I’m saying the man you thought disappeared…”

She looked toward the door.

“…has been inside this family’s life the entire time.””

Before Daniel could respond, the mansion security alarm suddenly started screaming.

Red lights flashed across the hallway.

Someone shouted from downstairs.

“Mr. Whitmore!””

Daniel ran out.

A security guard stood near the front entrance.

His face was terrified.

“What happened?””

The guard held out a small envelope.

“It was left at the door.””

Daniel took it.

No name.

No address.

Just his initials.

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Sarah.

Taken five years earlier.

She was standing outside the Whitmore mansion.

Holding baby Emma.

And behind her stood someone Daniel recognized immediately.

Someone who should not have been there.

Someone Victoria had just claimed was gone.

On the back of the photograph were six words:

*Your daughter was never the secret.*

Daniel turned the photo over.

May you like

And read the final sentence.

*The secret was who her father really is.*
