Chapter 5: The Truth Sarah Was Forced To Hide
The message stayed on Daniel’s phone screen.
*Because Emma is not your daughter.*
For a moment, he couldn’t breathe.
The words were simple.
Seven words.
But they carried the power to destroy everything he had just begun to rebuild.
He looked toward the garden.
Emma’s laughter from earlier still echoed in his mind.
The way she held his hand.
The way she looked at him like he was someone she had been waiting for her entire life.
His daughter.
His little girl.
Could that have been another lie?
Daniel closed his eyes.
No.
Something inside him refused to believe it.
Not because of blood.
Not because of a name.
Because the moment he saw Emma, something changed.
A connection he couldn’t explain.
A feeling he couldn’t fake.
But the question remained.
Why would someone send him that message?
And why had Sarah spent five years hiding?
At eleven forty-five that night, Daniel left the mansion.
Alone.
No driver.
No security.
No Victoria.
The city was quiet as he drove toward the address Sarah sent him.
An old apartment building on the edge of town.
Nothing like the world Daniel lived in.
No gates.
No cameras.
No luxury.
Just faded walls and dim hallway lights.
He climbed the stairs slowly.
Every step felt heavier.
Finally, he reached the apartment door.
Before he could knock, it opened.
Sarah stood there.
Five years disappeared in an instant.
She looked older.
Not old.
Just tired.
The kind of tired that came from carrying something too heavy for too long.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel.””
He stared at her.
There were a thousand things he wanted to say.
Anger.
Pain.
Questions.
Instead, only one word came out.
“Why?””
Sarah looked down.
“I knew you would ask that.””
“Then answer.””
She stepped aside.
“Come in.””
Daniel entered.
The apartment was small.
Simple.
A child’s drawings covered one wall.
Emma’s drawings.
Daniel stopped.
There were pictures of a family.
A little girl.
A mother.
And a man.
Him.
Even though Emma barely knew him, she had imagined him.
Sarah noticed where he was looking.
“She always wanted to know what you looked like.””
Daniel swallowed.
“She knew my name?””
Sarah nodded.
“I never lied to her about you.””
He turned.
“Everyone else did.””
Sarah looked away.
“I know.””
“Victoria told me you left.””
Sarah’s face tightened.
“I didn’t.””
“You told me you disappeared.””
“I had no choice.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“No choice?””
His voice cracked.
“You had my daughter.””
Sarah closed her eyes.
“I know.””
“You let me believe I lost you.””
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Sarah looked at him.
For the first time, he saw real fear.
Not sadness.
Fear.
“Daniel, five years ago, I discovered something about your company.””
“The theft?””
Sarah nodded.
“You knew?””
“I found financial records that didn’t make sense.””
She walked to a small table and picked up a folder.
“I was working with your accounting department. I noticed money moving through accounts that didn’t exist.””
Daniel opened the folder.
His eyes moved quickly across the documents.
The same names.
The same transactions.
Alexander Vale.
His expression changed.
“You found him.””
Sarah nodded.
“Alexander wasn’t gone.””
“What did he want?””
Sarah laughed quietly.
But there was no happiness in it.
“Your father built an empire. Alexander believed he deserved half of it.””
Daniel looked at the documents.
“My father trusted him.””
“Your father feared him.””
The room became silent.
Daniel looked up.
“What happened when you found out?””
Sarah’s hands shook.
“I was going to tell you.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
“Because Victoria found me first.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Victoria.””
Sarah nodded.
“She came to my apartment.””
“What did she say?””
Sarah looked at the floor.
“She said I didn’t understand the world I was entering.””
Daniel waited.
“She told me if I exposed Alexander, people would get hurt.””
“People?””
Sarah’s voice dropped.
“She showed me photographs.””
Daniel felt cold.
“Of what?””
“Of you.””
A pause.
“Your daily routine. Your office. Your home.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“She was watching me?””
“No.””
Sarah looked at him.
“Alexander was.””
Daniel stared.
“And Victoria knew.””
“Yes.””
The anger building inside Daniel became almost unbearable.
“She knew someone was threatening me and she said nothing?””
Sarah didn’t answer.
Because the answer was obvious.
Daniel walked toward the window.
The city lights blurred.
“So Victoria hid Emma because of Alexander?””
Sarah hesitated.
That hesitation caught his attention.
“No.””
He turned.
“What?””
Sarah looked nervous.
“There’s more.””
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“Tell me.””
Sarah took a deep breath.
“When Victoria found out I was pregnant, she wanted me to leave.””
“She threatened you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Sarah looked at him.
“Because she believed Emma would ruin her future with you.””
Daniel felt a painful weight in his chest.
“But that wasn’t the only reason.””
Sarah shook her head.
“She discovered something else.””
“What?””
Sarah walked closer.
“Something about Emma.””
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
The unknown message.
The warning.
The doubt.
Everything connected.
“What?””
Sarah looked directly into his eyes.
“Emma’s birth records were changed.””
Daniel went still.
“Changed?””
“Yes.””
“By who?””
Sarah didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Victoria.””
The room went silent.
Daniel stepped back.
“No.””
“I saw the documents.””
“No.””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
His voice rose.
“You’re telling me Victoria changed my daughter’s records?””
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.
“I’m telling you she tried to erase Emma.””
Daniel felt sick.
“Why?””
Sarah looked away.
“Because she didn’t want anyone asking questions.””
“Questions about what?””
Sarah whispered:
“About Emma’s father.””
There it was.
The same fear.
The same sentence.
Daniel stared at her.
“Is she my daughter?””
Sarah closed her eyes.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then:
“Yes.””
Relief came first.
Then confusion.
“Then why did someone send me that message?””
Sarah’s face changed.
“Someone knows.””
“Knows what?””
“That Emma’s records were changed.””
Daniel frowned.
“But if she’s mine—”
Sarah interrupted.
“Daniel, listen.””
Her voice became urgent.
“Someone wants you to doubt Emma because doubt is easier to control than anger.””
He stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
“It means they don’t need to prove she isn’t your daughter.””
Sarah stepped closer.
“They only need you to question it.””
Daniel looked down.
That was exactly what had happened.
One message.
Seven words.
And suddenly he questioned the child who had waited five years to meet him.
He hated that.
A noise came from outside.
Sarah immediately froze.
Daniel noticed.
“What?””
She moved toward the window.
“Someone followed you.””
Daniel looked outside.
A black car sat across the street.
The engine was running.
“Who is it?””
Sarah’s face went pale.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel reached for his phone.
“We call the police.””
“No.””
“Sarah.””
“No police.””
“Why?””
“Because five years ago, I tried that.””
Daniel stopped.
“What happened?””
Sarah looked at him.
“The police report disappeared.””
His expression changed.
“Someone erased it?””
“Yes.””
A sudden crash came from downstairs.
Both of them froze.
Sarah grabbed Daniel’s arm.
“Take Emma and leave.””
Daniel stared.
“Emma isn’t here.””
Sarah looked confused.
Then terrified.
“What do you mean?””
Daniel’s heart dropped.
“She’s at the mansion.””
Sarah’s face went white.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
Her voice shook.
“Victoria knows where she is.””
Before Daniel could respond, his phone rang.
The number was from the mansion.
He answered immediately.
“Hello?””
No one spoke.
Only breathing.
Then a small voice.
“Daddy?””
Daniel froze.
“Emma?””
A whisper.
“Daddy, someone is here.””
Daniel stood.
“Emma, where are you?””
The little girl’s voice trembled.
“In my room.””
A pause.
Then:
“Mommy is crying.””
Daniel’s grip tightened.
“What happened?””
The phone moved.
A different voice came through.
A woman’s voice.
Victoria.
But she wasn’t crying anymore.
She sounded terrified.
“Daniel…”
“What did you do?””
“Nothing.””
“Where is Emma?””
“Listen to me.””
Her voice shook.
“He found us.””
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
“Who?””
Silence.
Then Victoria whispered:
“The man in the photograph.””
The call suddenly cut off.
Daniel stared at the phone.
Sarah looked at him.
And both of them knew.
May you like
The past had finally returned.
And this time, it had come for Emma.
