Chapter 8: The Sister Who Was Erased
The video ended.
But Vittorio couldn’t move.
The screen of his phone went dark, yet the image remained burned into his mind.
Lucy.
Sitting beside a stranger who claimed to be her family.
A woman holding a document that could rewrite everything Vittorio believed about his daughter’s life.
A twin sister.
A hidden child.
A secret buried for six years.
“No.””
The word escaped his mouth quietly.
Nobody spoke.
Sofia watched him carefully.
Bianca looked pale.
Marcus looked like he wanted to disappear.
Emma covered her mouth with both hands.
Vittorio stared at the empty phone screen.
“My daughter has a sister.””
Sofia nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“And everyone knew except me.””
“No.””
Sofia stepped closer.
“Not everyone.””
Vittorio looked at her.
“Then tell me who knew.””
Sofia lowered her eyes.
“Your father.””
The answer was expected.
But it still hurt.
Vittorio turned away.
His father.
The man who had spent his entire life teaching him that family came first.
The man who had built an empire on loyalty.
Had hidden a child.
Had manipulated another.
Had allowed his own granddaughter to become a piece in a battle for control.
“Call Clara.””
Sofia looked at him.
“Vittorio—”
“Call her.””
His voice carried a finality nobody questioned.
“I need to speak to her.””
Sofia nodded.
“She will answer.””
“How do you know?””
“Because this is what she wanted.””
Vittorio looked at the phone.
“She wanted me to know?””
“Yes.””
“Then why take Lucy?””
Sofia’s expression changed.
“Because she believes you are the only person who can understand what happened.””
Vittorio laughed bitterly.
“She kidnapped my daughter to make a point?””
“No.””
Sofia looked toward the stairs.
“She took Lucy because she believes Lucy is the only person who can prove she wasn’t abandoned.””
That sentence stayed with him.
Because beneath the anger, beneath the betrayal, there was something else.
A woman who had lost a child.
A child who had lost a family.
A family destroyed by lies.
But none of that changed one fact.
Lucy was terrified.
And Vittorio needed her back.
The call connected.
This time Clara answered immediately.
“Vittorio.””
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Where is Lucy?””
“She’s with me.””
“I want to see her.””
A pause.
Then Clara said:
“Lucy?””
The phone shifted.
A small voice came through.
“Daddy?””
Vittorio closed his eyes.
The sound almost broke him.
“Lucy.””
“Daddy, I’m okay.””
He swallowed.
“Are you hurt?””
“No.””
“Are you scared?””
A pause.
Then:
“A little.””
That was enough.
Vittorio’s voice changed.
“Clara.””
“Yes?””
“If you ever make my daughter afraid again, nothing in this world will protect you.””
Silence.
Then Clara whispered:
“You sound like your father.””
The sentence made him freeze.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you think power fixes everything.””
“I’m not talking about power.””
“No?””
Her voice became sharper.
“You built your entire life believing you were different from him.””
Vittorio looked away.
“But you are still a Romano.””
The words hit harder than he expected.
“Where is the location?””
“I’ll send it.””
“No games.””
“I’m not playing a game.””
“Then why the documents?””
A pause.
“Because Lucy deserves the truth.””
Vittorio looked at Sofia.
Then at Bianca.
“What truth?””
Clara answered:
“The truth about the night Elena died.””
The room became silent.
Vittorio’s grip tightened around the phone.
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“You killed her.””
The silence lasted several seconds.
Then Clara said:
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
“I didn’t kill Elena.””
“Then what happened?””
Clara’s voice changed.
For the first time, she sounded like someone remembering pain.
“Elena came to me that night.””
“Why?””
“She knew what your father had done.””
Vittorio’s eyes narrowed.
“What did he do?””
“He changed the inheritance.””
“I know that.””
“No.””
Clara’s voice became emotional.
“He changed more than paperwork.””
She continued.
“He erased my daughter.””
Vittorio looked at Sofia.
“Explain.””
Sofia remained silent.
Clara continued.
“Your father believed only one child could inherit the Romano fortune.””
“But there were two.””
“Yes.””
“Lucy and your daughter.””
A pause.
“And Clara’s daughter.””
Vittorio corrected himself.
“No.””
The words surprised everyone.
Clara went quiet.
“My daughter.””
Vittorio looked at the phone.
“Lucy is my daughter.””
“Yes.””
“And so is the other girl.””
“Yes.””
“Then why were they separated?””
Clara’s voice broke.
“Because your father believed he could control one child.””
The room was silent.
“He thought if my daughter disappeared, Lucy would become the perfect heir.””
Vittorio felt sick.
“He chose money over children.””
“Yes.””
“Where was Elena in all this?””
Clara didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“She tried to stop him.””
Vittorio looked down.
“And she died.””
“Yes.””
“Because of him?””
A long pause.
“No.””
The answer surprised him.
“Then who?””
Clara whispered:
“Because she chose to protect both girls.””
The call ended.
Not disconnected.
Ended.
Vittorio stared.
“She hung up.””
Sofia looked worried.
“That wasn’t an accident.””
“What do you mean?””
“She wants you to come.””
Vittorio picked up his coat.
“I’m going.””
Sofia stepped forward.
“You can’t go alone.””
“I can.””
“No.””
Her voice was firm.
“You don’t understand Clara.””
Vittorio looked at her.
“Do you?””
Sofia hesitated.
“Yes.””
“Then tell me.””
Sofia looked at the floor.
“She doesn’t want revenge.””
“What does she want?””
“She wants someone to admit she was wronged.””
Vittorio stared.
“And if I don’t?””
Sofia’s expression darkened.
“Then she will destroy everything your father built.””
The abandoned Romano property sat outside the city.
An old mansion surrounded by overgrown trees.
The place had been empty for years.
But when Vittorio arrived, the lights were on.
Someone had been waiting.
He entered alone.
“Sofia said not to come alone.””
Vittorio ignored her.
“I’m not Sofia.””
The voice came from the hallway.
Clara stepped forward.
Lucy stood beside her.
The moment Vittorio saw his daughter, he stopped.
“Daddy!””
Lucy ran.
Clara didn’t stop her.
Vittorio caught Lucy and held her tightly.
For several seconds, nothing else mattered.
Not the secrets.
Not the lies.
Not the family war.
Only his daughter.
“You’re okay.””
Lucy nodded against him.
“I knew you would come.””
He held her tighter.
“I always will.””
Then Clara spoke.
“I knew you would say that.””
Vittorio looked up.
“You used my daughter to test me.””
“No.””
Clara shook her head.
“I used your daughter to test the truth.””
“What truth?””
She walked toward an old wooden table.
On it were dozens of documents.
Photographs.
Medical records.
Letters.
Clara picked up one.
“Your father didn’t just hide my daughter.””
She looked at Lucy.
“He hid the fact that both girls were born together.””
Vittorio stared.
“What are you saying?””
Clara handed him a document.
“This is the original birth record.””
He opened it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Two names.
Two births.
Two daughters.
But then he saw something else.
A note attached by the hospital.
*“Infant A transferred to Romano family care.””*
*“Infant B transferred under sealed identity.””*
Vittorio looked up.
“Why?””
Clara’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because your father chose.””
“Chose what?””
“Which daughter would be loved.””
The words destroyed him.
Vittorio looked at Lucy.
Then at the document.
Then back at Clara.
“What happened to Infant B?””
Clara looked away.
“She grew up believing nobody wanted her.””
The room went silent.
Then Clara said:
“And that child is the reason your father was afraid.””
Vittorio frowned.
“Why?””
Clara reached for another photograph.
She handed it to him.
It showed a young girl.
Older than Lucy by a few minutes.
Standing beside Elena.
The girl had Lucy’s eyes.
Lucy’s face.
But a different life.
On the back was a name.
*Isabella Romano.*
Vittorio stared.
“Where is she?””
Clara looked at him.
“She’s been closer to you than you think.””
A cold feeling moved through him.
“Who?””
Clara didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked toward the door.
Footsteps echoed outside.
Slow.
Confident.
Someone entered the mansion.
And a familiar voice spoke.
“Because she has been living under another name.””
Vittorio turned.
His blood ran cold.
Standing in the doorway was the person he least expected.
The person who had been beside Lucy every day.
The person who had protected her.
The person who had recorded Bianca’s cruelty.
Emma.
But she was no longer trembling.
She was holding a document.
May you like
And Clara whispered:
“Meet Isabella Romano.””
