Chapter 6: The Child Hidden Behind the Lie

Vittorio read the sentence again.

*“The child was replaced.””*

The words seemed to burn into the page.

For years, he had believed the hardest thing he would ever face was losing Elena.

Then came the grief.

The loneliness.

The responsibility of raising a child he thought was the last piece of the woman he loved.

Lucy had been his reason to keep going.

His light after the darkest days.

And now someone had placed a question in front of him that threatened to destroy everything.

Who was Lucy?

His hand shook slightly.

Not because he doubted his daughter.

Never that.

Because he was terrified of what someone had done to her.

“What does this mean?”” Vittorio asked.

Nobody answered.

He looked at Marcus.

“You brought me this file.””

Marcus nodded.

“Where did you find it?””

“In Father’s private archive.””

“Why was it hidden?””

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“Because he didn’t want anyone seeing it.””

Vittorio closed the folder.

“Everyone knew except me.””

The accusation was quiet.

But it hit everyone.

Bianca looked down.

Marcus said nothing.

Emma stood near the staircase, watching him carefully.

Then she spoke.

“Mr. Romano.””

Vittorio looked at her.

“What?””

“There’s something I never told you.””

His expression hardened.

“Today seems to be the day everyone tells me things they should have said years ago.””

Emma lowered her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

“What is it?””

She hesitated.

“I met Sofia before.””

The room went still.

“When?””

“Before she entered the house.””

Vittorio stepped closer.

“Where?””

Emma swallowed.

“At the hospital.””

His face changed.

“What hospital?””

“The hospital where Lucy was born.””

Nobody moved.

Vittorio’s voice became low.

“Explain.””

Emma took a shaky breath.

“I worked there before I came here. Only for a few months.””

“And Sofia was there?””

“Yes.””

“What was she doing?””

Emma looked toward the folder.

“She was looking for records.””

“Whose records?””

“Lucy’s.””

The answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

Vittorio felt his anger rising.

“What did she want?””

“I don’t know.””

“You saw her.””

“Yes.””

“You spoke to her.””

Emma nodded.

“She asked me if I knew the Romano family.””

“And?””

“I said yes.””

“What did she say?””

Emma’s hands trembled.

“She said…”

Emma stopped.

“Say it.””

“She said, ‘The child they are protecting is not the child they lost.’”

The words froze the room.

Vittorio looked at the folder.

Then toward the stairs.

Lucy.

His Lucy.

“I need the hospital records.””

Marcus immediately said:

“Vittorio—”

“No.””

His voice cut through the room.

“I need the truth.””

Bianca stepped forward.

“You need to be careful.””

Vittorio looked at her.

“You don’t get to warn me about danger.””

Her expression tightened.

“I know.””

For once, she didn’t fight.

“I know I lost that right.””

That surprised him.

But not enough.

“Where is Sofia now?””

Nobody answered.

Then Marcus said:

“She’s here.””

Vittorio turned sharply.

“What?””

Marcus looked toward the window.

“I saw her arrive.””

A cold feeling moved through Vittorio.

“When?””

“Ten minutes ago.””

The room became silent.

“She’s inside the house?””

Marcus nodded.

Before Vittorio could respond, the sound of footsteps echoed through the hallway.

Slow.

Confident.

Someone who did not fear being found.

The breakfast room doors opened.

And she walked in.

The woman from the photograph.

Sofia Romano.

She looked older than Elena.

Stronger.

Her dark hair was tied back, and her expression carried years of anger she had never released.

Her eyes immediately found Vittorio.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then she smiled sadly.

“You look exactly like him.””

Vittorio stared.

“Like who?””

“Our father.””

The words felt unreal.

“You’re Sofia.””

“Yes.””

“My sister.””

She nodded.

“Finally.””

Vittorio’s face hardened.

“Why are you here?””

Sofia looked around the room.

“The same question everyone asked me twenty-five years ago.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means nobody ever wanted me here.””

Her eyes moved toward the folder.

“But they needed me.””

Vittorio held the documents tightly.

“Did you replace my daughter?””

The question changed the room.

Sofia’s expression shifted.

Not anger.

Pain.

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

“Then explain.””

She looked at Bianca.

Then Marcus.

Then Emma.

Finally, back at Vittorio.

“Your daughter was never replaced.””

Vittorio didn’t move.

“Then why does this say she was?””

Sofia walked closer.

“Because someone wanted you to believe that.””

“Who?””

She looked toward the staircase.

Her eyes softened.

“Your father.””

Vittorio felt the old anger return.

“Why?””

“Because he was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of Lucy.””

The answer made no sense.

Sofia continued.

“Not because of who she was.””

She pointed toward the folder.

“But because of what she represented.””

Vittorio’s voice sharpened.

“Stop talking like everyone else.””

Sofia nodded.

“You deserve the truth.””

She looked at him.

“Elena discovered that your father had changed the family trust before Lucy was born.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Sofia shook her head.

“You know the legal version.””

She stepped closer.

“You don’t know the personal one.””

Vittorio waited.

“Your father wanted control over Lucy’s future.””

“Yes.””

“But Elena refused.””

Vittorio remembered.

Elena had always been protective.

Strong.

Unwilling to let anyone control their child.

“What happened?””

Sofia’s expression became darker.

“Your father tried to take Lucy away.””

The room went silent.

“He failed.””

“How?””

“Because Elena hid her.””

Vittorio frowned.

“She hid our daughter?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Sofia looked at him.

“In the hospital.””

A terrible thought formed.

“What are you saying?””

Sofia whispered:

“The night Lucy was born, there were two babies.””

Nobody spoke.

Vittorio felt dizzy.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Two?””

Sofia nodded.

“One was Lucy.””

His heart raced.

“And the other?””

Sofia looked toward the stairs.

“A baby whose existence was erased.””

The silence was overwhelming.

Vittorio’s voice became almost a whisper.

“Why?””

“Because that baby was dangerous.””

“Why?””

“Because of who the mother was.””

Vittorio stared.

“Who?””

Sofia looked at Bianca.

Bianca’s face changed.

“No.””

Vittorio noticed.

“You know.””

Bianca looked terrified.

“I didn’t know the whole story.””

“Who was the mother?””

Nobody answered.

Then Sofia said:

“Elena’s sister.””

The room froze.

Vittorio blinked.

“Elena had a sister?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Sofia shook her head.

“That’s the lie your father created.””

Vittorio looked at the folder.

Then at Sofia.

“Where is she?””

Sofia’s expression changed.

“She’s been closer than you think.””

The words made his stomach tighten.

“Who?””

Sofia reached into her coat.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I came here because I wanted to stop this before it went further.””

She handed it to him.

Vittorio opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Old.

Folded many times.

The handwriting was familiar.

Elena’s.

His hands began shaking.

He unfolded it.

The first line destroyed him.

*“Vittorio, if you are reading this, it means they failed to keep the truth from you.””*

He continued reading.

*“Lucy is safe. She has always been safe. But there is another child you must find.””*

His eyes moved down.

Then stopped.

Because the next sentence was written like a warning.

*“The girl living in your house is not the only daughter you lost.””*

Vittorio looked up.

“What does this mean?””

Sofia didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked toward the staircase.

At that exact moment, a scream echoed from upstairs.

Lucy.

Vittorio dropped the letter and ran.

When he reached the bedroom, the door was open.

Emma was on the floor.

The window was shattered.

And Lucy was gone.

On the bed was a single note.

Vittorio picked it up.

May you like

Three words were written on it.

*“Come find her.””*
