Chapter 7: The Daughter Taken From the Shadows
“Come find her.””
The three words stared back at Vittorio like a threat.
Like a challenge.
Like someone knew exactly how to break him.
His hands trembled as he held the note.
Not because he was afraid.
Because Lucy was gone.
“Where is she?””
His voice was barely recognizable.
Emma was still on the floor near the broken window, tears streaming down her face.
“I’m sorry.””
Vittorio turned.
“Where is my daughter?””
“I was right here.””
Her voice cracked.
“I was sitting beside her. She was drawing. She asked me if you were angry at her because of what happened downstairs.””
Vittorio’s expression softened for a second.
Then fear returned.
“What happened next?””
Emma wiped her face.
“I heard a noise outside.””
“What kind of noise?””
“Like someone opening the balcony door.””
Vittorio looked toward the shattered window.
“This window?””
Emma nodded.
“I turned around, and there was a woman.””
His heart stopped.
“Sofia?””
Emma shook her head.
“No.””
The answer confused him.
“Then who?””
Emma looked terrified.
“She looked like Lucy.””
Nobody spoke.
Vittorio stared.
“What?””
“She had the same eyes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
Emma’s voice became smaller.
“But when Lucy saw her, she didn’t scream.””
Vittorio froze.
“What did she do?””
“She said…”
Emma swallowed.
“She said, ‘Mommy?’”
The word cut through him.
Vittorio turned toward the empty bed.
Lucy’s stuffed rabbit was lying on the blanket.
Everything else was exactly the same.
Except his daughter.
Gone.
Behind him, footsteps approached.
Sofia appeared at the doorway.
Her face changed when she saw the empty room.
“What happened?””
Vittorio looked at her.
“Your warning came too late.””
Sofia immediately understood.
“No.””
She stepped inside.
“No, no, no.””
For the first time, Vittorio saw something different in her.
Not anger.
Not confidence.
Panic.
“You know who took her.””
It wasn’t a question.
Sofia looked at the note.
Then closed her eyes.
“She found her.””
Vittorio grabbed her arm.
“Who?””
Sofia looked at him.
“The other daughter.””
The words made the room feel smaller.
“Explain.””
Sofia pulled away.
“Not here.””
Vittorio’s anger exploded.
“My daughter is missing.””
“And if we waste time, she will stay missing.””
That stopped him.
Because Sofia was right.
He hated it.
But she was right.
He turned toward Marcus.
“Lock down the estate.””
Marcus immediately moved.
Vittorio looked at him.
“And Marcus?””
“Yes?””
“If anyone leaves this property without my permission…”
He paused.
“They are stopped.””
Marcus nodded.
For once, he didn’t argue.
The entire Romano estate shifted into chaos.
Security teams moved through the halls.
Cars were checked.
Gates were sealed.
But Vittorio knew something.
Whoever took Lucy had not broken in.
They had walked in.
They knew the house.
They knew the security system.
They knew exactly where to find her.
And that meant one thing.
The enemy was still inside his family.
Twenty minutes later, Vittorio, Sofia, Bianca, Marcus, and Emma gathered in the private study.
The room where Vittorio’s father had stored decades of family history.
Now it felt like a room full of ghosts.
Vittorio placed the note on the desk.
“Start talking.””
Sofia looked at him.
“The woman who took Lucy is Clara.””
“Who is Clara?””
Sofia hesitated.
“She was Elena’s sister.””
Vittorio stared.
“You said there was another child.””
“Yes.””
“And Clara?””
“Clara was her mother.””
Vittorio felt a chill.
“Her daughter.””
Sofia nodded.
“The child everyone erased.””
Bianca suddenly spoke.
“I thought she was dead.””
Everyone looked at her.
Vittorio’s eyes narrowed.
“You knew about Clara?””
Bianca looked uncomfortable.
“I knew there was a woman connected to Elena.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Bianca sighed.
“Yes.””
The answer made Vittorio angry.
“Everyone knew.””
“No.””
Bianca shook her head.
“Not everyone.””
She looked at Lucy’s empty chair.
“I only learned after I married you.””
“And you stayed?””
Bianca looked down.
“I was already trapped.””
Vittorio laughed bitterly.
“You expect sympathy?””
“No.””
Her voice was quiet.
“I don’t.””
That surprised him.
Bianca continued.
“Clara wanted revenge.””
“Against who?””
“Everyone.””
Sofia nodded.
“She believed the Romano family destroyed her life.””
Vittorio looked at Sofia.
“Did they?””
Silence.
That silence answered enough.
“What happened?””
Sofia looked toward the window.
“Clara was Elena’s older sister. She was supposed to inherit part of the family trust.””
“But she didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Sofia hesitated.
“Because your father believed she was unstable.””
Vittorio frowned.
“Was she?””
Sofia didn’t answer immediately.
“She was angry.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
Sofia looked at him.
“It’s not.””
She took a breath.
“But anger does strange things to people.””
Vittorio looked at the note again.
“What does she want?””
Sofia’s expression darkened.
“Lucy.””
“Why?””
“Because Lucy is the proof that Elena won.””
Vittorio shook his head.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does to Clara.””
Sofia stepped closer.
“She believes Elena stole her daughter’s future to save yours.””
Vittorio looked toward the ceiling.
Toward where Lucy’s room was.
Where she should have been.
“She took a child because of a grudge?””
Sofia nodded sadly.
“Yes.””
Then Bianca spoke.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“She didn’t take Lucy because of Elena.””
Vittorio turned.
“Then why?””
Bianca looked afraid.
“Because Clara believes Lucy has something.””
“What?””
Bianca looked at the old family books lining the wall.
“The original Romano inheritance agreement.””
Vittorio frowned.
“The one my father changed?””
“Yes.””
Sofia nodded.
“The original document named Clara’s daughter as the rightful heir.””
The room went silent.
Vittorio looked at Sofia.
“But Lucy?””
“Lucy became the heir after Clara disappeared.””
“Disappeared?””
Sofia looked away.
“Your father made sure nobody could find her.””
Vittorio felt sick.
His father.
Again.
Every road led back to him.
Then Marcus suddenly spoke.
“There’s something else.””
Vittorio turned.
“What?””
Marcus looked nervous.
“I know where she took Lucy.””
Everyone stared.
“How?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Because Clara contacted me.””
The room froze.
Vittorio stepped forward.
“You spoke to her?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Last night.””
The anger returned instantly.
“You knew she was here?””
“I didn’t know she would take Lucy.””
“But you knew she was planning something.””
Marcus looked down.
“Yes.””
Vittorio grabbed the front of his shirt.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Marcus didn’t fight back.
“Because she threatened me.””
“With what?””
Marcus’s eyes filled with guilt.
“With the truth about my mother.””
The room went quiet.
Vittorio released him.
“What truth?””
Marcus looked at the floor.
“My mother wasn’t your father’s first wife.””
Nobody spoke.
“And?””
“She was Clara’s friend.””
Vittorio frowned.
“I don’t understand.””
Marcus looked at him.
“She helped Clara disappear.””
The pieces shifted again.
A family built on secrets.
A house full of people protecting lies.
A child caught in the middle.
Vittorio grabbed his coat.
“Where is Clara?””
Marcus handed him a small piece of paper.
“An abandoned Romano property outside the city.””
Sofia looked at the address.
Her face changed.
“No.””
“What?””
“She wouldn’t take Lucy there.””
“Why?””
Sofia whispered:
“Because that’s where Elena died.””
The words froze everyone.
Vittorio looked at her.
“What?””
Sofia’s voice broke.
“That wasn’t an accident.””
Silence.
“What are you saying?””
Sofia looked at him.
“The night Elena died…”
She paused.
“Clara was there.””
Vittorio felt the world collapse around him.
He had spent six years believing he lost Elena to fate.
To an accident.
To something nobody could control.
But now another possibility stood in front of him.
A possibility too painful to accept.
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at it.
Vittorio answered.
A woman’s voice came through.
Soft.
Calm.
Almost gentle.
“Hello, Vittorio.””
His blood ran cold.
“Clara.””
A quiet laugh.
“So you finally know my name.””
“Where is my daughter?””
“She’s safe.””
“If you hurt her—”
“I won’t.””
The voice became emotional.
“You should know that I loved Elena.””
Vittorio tightened his grip.
“Then why are you doing this?””
A pause.
Then Clara whispered:
“Because Elena promised me she would give my daughter back.””
Vittorio froze.
“What?””
“But she lied.””
The call crackled.
Then Clara said:
“And now I’m taking what was always supposed to be mine.””
The line went dead.
A second later, Vittorio received a video.
He opened it.
Lucy was sitting in an unfamiliar room.
She looked scared.
But unharmed.
And beside her sat Clara.
Holding a document.
Clara looked directly into the camera.
“This is the truth your father buried.””
She lifted the paper.
“Your daughter was never the only child involved.””
Then she placed another document beside it.
A birth certificate.
With Lucy’s name on it.
And beneath Lucy’s name was a second line.
*Twin Sister: Clara Romano’s Daughter*
Vittorio stared at the screen.
Because the impossible truth had just become real.
Lucy had never been alone.
May you like
She had a sister.
And that sister had come back to take her.
