Amused

Chapter 5: The Woman Who Entered Lucy’s Room

Vittorio stared at the image on his phone.

He forgot how to breathe.

The security camera photo was grainy, captured in the dim blue light of Lucy’s bedroom.

But there was no mistake.

A woman stood beside his daughter’s bed.

Watching her sleep.

The same woman from the old photograph.

The same woman Emma had just identified.

Sofia.

His fingers tightened around the phone.

“When was this taken?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Emma spoke.

“Three nights ago.””

Vittorio slowly turned toward her.

“Three nights ago, I was in London.””

Emma nodded.

“Yes.””

“And Lucy was alone?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

Vittorio looked at her.

“Who was with her?””

Emma hesitated.

“Bianca.””

Vittorio’s eyes moved to his wife.

Bianca’s face was unreadable.

“You knew?””

She didn’t respond.

“You knew this woman entered my daughter’s room?””

Bianca looked away.

That was all he needed.

A confession without words.

Vittorio walked toward her.

“What was she doing here?””

Bianca’s voice was quiet.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“I told you. I wasn’t the only person involved.””

He stopped.

“You expect me to believe you now?””

“No.””

Bianca looked at him.

“I expect you to realize that if I wanted to destroy Lucy, she would not be alive and standing upstairs.””

The statement was cold.

But it carried a strange truth.

Vittorio hated admitting it.

Bianca had done horrible things.

Things that could never be forgiven.

But Sofia’s appearance changed the situation.

There was someone else.

Someone who had been moving behind the scenes.

Someone powerful enough to manipulate his own family.

“Where is my father?”” Vittorio asked.

Nobody answered.

His phone rang.

The timing was almost impossible.

He looked at the screen.

*Alessandro Romano.*

He answered immediately.

“Father.””

The older man’s voice sounded tired.

“You found out.””

Vittorio froze.

“What?””

“You saw Sofia.””

The room went silent.

Vittorio’s eyes hardened.

“How do you know that name?””

A pause.

Then Alessandro said:

“Because I brought her into the house.””

Every person in the room heard it.

Bianca looked down.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Vittorio felt a wave of disbelief.

“You did what?””

“I need you to listen.””

“No.””

His voice became dangerously calm.

“You listen to me.””

A long silence followed.

“My daughter was humiliated in my own house.””

“I know.””

“My wife was involved.””

“I know.””

“My brother helped cover it.””

“I know.””

Vittorio’s grip tightened around the phone.

“And you knew?””

Alessandro didn’t answer.

That silence hurt more than anything.

“You knew.””

Finally, his father spoke.

“I knew something was happening.””

“Something?””

Vittorio laughed bitterly.

“Lucy was forced to eat from a dog bowl.””

“I know.””

“And you did nothing?””

“I was trying to find the person controlling Bianca.””

The words made Vittorio stop.

“Controlling?””

“Yes.””

His father’s voice lowered.

“Bianca was never powerful enough to create this plan alone.””

Vittorio looked at Bianca.

She looked away.

“What plan?””

Alessandro sighed.

“The plan to take control of the Romano inheritance.””

Vittorio walked toward the window.

The estate stretched before him.

The gardens.

The fountains.

The home his family had owned for generations.

A place that suddenly felt like a trap.

“Who is Sofia?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Your sister.””

The world went silent.

Vittorio stopped moving.

“What?””

“She is your older sister.””

The words were impossible.

“I don’t have a sister.””

“You were told you didn’t.””

Vittorio’s face changed.

“By who?””

His father didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Vittorio understood.

“By you.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was almost worse.

“Why?””

Alessandro’s voice cracked slightly.

“Because I was protecting you.””

“No.””

Vittorio shook his head.

“You were controlling me.””

“That’s not true.””

“Then explain.””

Silence.

Then Alessandro said:

“Sofia was born before I married your mother.””

Vittorio said nothing.

“She was removed from the family after a dispute over the inheritance.””

“What dispute?””

“She believed she deserved control of the Romano empire.””

Vittorio looked toward the photograph.

The woman beside Elena.

“She knew Elena?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Alessandro hesitated.

“Because Elena helped her.””

The pieces began falling into place.

Elena.

Sofia.

The inheritance.

Lucy.

“Why would Elena help someone who wanted the family fortune?””

“Because Elena discovered something.””

“What?””

“Something about me.””

Vittorio’s eyes narrowed.

“What?””

His father was quiet.

Then:

“I changed the inheritance rules.””

Vittorio froze.

“What do you mean?””

“I added conditions.””

“What conditions?””

“That Lucy would only inherit if she was raised by someone approved by the family.””

Vittorio looked toward Bianca.

“So Bianca.””

“Yes.””

His anger returned.

“You chose her?””

“No.””

A pause.

“She chose herself.””

Vittorio understood.

Bianca hadn’t entered his life by accident.

She had positioned herself.

The marriage.

The trust.

The control.

Everything.

But then why hurt Lucy?

Why the cruelty?

Why the humiliation?

“Father.””

“Yes?””

“Why the dog bowl?””

The silence on the other end was long.

Too long.

Finally, Alessandro said:

“Because Sofia wanted proof.””

Vittorio’s eyes narrowed.

“What?””

“She wanted Bianca to reveal herself.””

The explanation made him furious.

“My daughter was used as bait?””

“No.””

“She was.””

His voice shook.

“You allowed my daughter to suffer so you could expose someone?””

Alessandro didn’t deny it.

And that was the worst part.

Vittorio ended the call.

He stood completely still.

Everyone watched him.

Bianca spoke softly.

“Now you know.””

He turned.

“Know what?””

“That I was never the biggest threat.””

Vittorio looked at her.

“You hurt my daughter.””

“Yes.””

The answer surprised him.

No excuses.

No denial.

“I did.””

Bianca’s eyes filled slightly.

“But I was also afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“Sofia.””

Vittorio stared.

“You knew her?””

Bianca nodded.

“She found me before I met you.””

The room went quiet.

“She told me if I married you, Lucy would be protected.””

Vittorio laughed once.

A cold sound.

“Protected?””

“No.””

Bianca looked down.

“Not protected.””

“What then?””

“Controlled.””

The honesty shocked him.

“Why did you agree?””

Bianca looked toward the stairs.

“At first?””

She swallowed.

“I wanted money.””

Nobody spoke.

“But then…”

Her voice became smaller.

“I started to care about Lucy.””

Vittorio’s expression hardened.

“Do not.””

“I know.””

Bianca nodded.

“I know I have no right to say that.””

She looked at him.

“But it’s true.””

The room remained silent.

Then Marcus suddenly stepped forward.

“There’s something you need to know.””

Vittorio turned.

“What now?””

Marcus looked nervous.

“I found out why Sofia came back.””

“Why?””

Marcus reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small folder.

“I found this in Father’s office.””

Vittorio took it.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

Medical records.

Legal papers.

And one file marked:

*LUCY ROMANO — ORIGINAL PATERNITY REPORT*

Vittorio opened it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

“No.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What is it?””

Vittorio didn’t answer.

Because the document contained a result he never expected.

A result that destroyed every assumption he had ever made.

At the bottom of the page was a biological match.

Not Elena.

Not another woman.

Not a stranger.

The name was his.

*Vittorio Romano.*

But beneath it was another note.

Handwritten.

Added years later.

Five words.

*“The child was replaced.””*

Vittorio looked up.

And for the first time that day, he felt something more frightening than anger.

Fear.

Because if Lucy had been replaced…

May you like

Then where was the child he had been raising?

And who was the little girl sleeping upstairs?
