Chapter 4: The Name Hidden in the Family Records
For a moment, nobody moved.
Not Bianca.
Not Marcus.
Not Emma.
Not even Vittorio.
Because the question came from the one person in the room who deserved the truth more than anyone.
Lucy.
She stood halfway down the staircase, holding her stuffed rabbit against her chest. Her small eyes moved from face to face, searching for an answer she could understand.
“Who is my real mother?””
Vittorio felt the air leave his lungs.
Six years.
Six years of bedtime stories.
Six years of birthday candles.
Six years of telling Lucy about the woman who had given her life and loved her more than anything.
Elena.
Her mother.
His greatest love.
And now, in one morning, Bianca had thrown his entire world into chaos.
Vittorio slowly walked toward the stairs.
“Lucy.””
She looked at him.
“Is Bianca right?””
He stopped.
The question was innocent.
But it carried the weight of everything she had already suffered.
He reached her and knelt down.
“No one gets to decide who your family is.””
“But…”
Her voice trembled.
“Is Mommy Elena?””
Vittorio looked into her eyes.
And he made a decision.
He would not lie.
Not to her.
Not anymore.
“I don’t know yet.””
Lucy’s face fell.
The answer hurt.
He saw it.
And he hated himself for not being able to give her certainty.
“But I know one thing,” he continued quickly.
“What?””
“You are my daughter.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Even if I’m not?””
Vittorio froze.
The pain in that question was unbearable.
He placed both hands around her tiny ones.
“Especially if you are confused. Especially if you are scared. Especially if everyone else in this room tries to tell you something different.””
Lucy whispered:
“You still love me?””
Vittorio pulled her into his arms.
“More than anything in this world.””
Behind him, Bianca watched silently.
For the first time, she looked less like a woman who had won a battle.
She looked like someone watching a plan collapse.
Vittorio carried Lucy back upstairs and left her with Emma.
Before leaving, he whispered:
“Stay with her.””
Emma nodded.
“I will.””
“And Emma?””
“Yes, sir?””
“If anyone tries to enter this room without my permission…”
She understood.
“I won’t let them.””
Vittorio returned downstairs.
The moment he entered the breakfast room, the softness disappeared.
The businessman returned.
The man who had negotiated billion-dollar deals.
The man who had destroyed companies that threatened his family.
He picked up the medical document.
“Start talking.””
Bianca remained near the table.
Marcus stood behind her.
Neither spoke.
Vittorio looked at Marcus.
“You first.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I can’t.””
Vittorio stared.
“You can’t?””
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
Vittorio stepped closer.
“I understand perfectly.””
His voice lowered.
“You watched my daughter suffer.””
Marcus looked down.
“You watched.””
The words hit him.
Because they were true.
Marcus had not been the one forcing Lucy toward the bowl.
He had not been the one making cruel comments.
But he had stood there.
He had laughed.
And he had chosen silence.
“I was told it was temporary,” Marcus said quietly.
Vittorio’s eyes narrowed.
“By who?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
“By who?””
“Father.””
The room went silent.
Vittorio stared.
“My father told you?””
Marcus nodded.
“He said Lucy’s position in the family had to be controlled.””
Vittorio felt something break inside him.
His father.
The man who taught him loyalty.
The man who built the Romano empire.
The man who had held Lucy as a baby.
“How long?””
Marcus looked ashamed.
“Since before Lucy was born.””
Vittorio’s expression changed.
“Explain.””
Marcus hesitated.
“Your father knew Elena was hiding something.””
“What?””
“He believed she was protecting someone.””
“Who?””
Marcus looked toward Bianca.
She answered.
“Herself.””
Vittorio turned.
“Enough.””
Bianca folded her arms.
“You want answers, don’t you?””
“Yes.””
“Then listen.””
She took a deep breath.
“Before Elena died, she discovered something about the Romano family.””
“What?””
“The inheritance.””
Vittorio frowned.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does.””
Bianca pointed at the document.
“Lucy’s bloodline matters because the Romano trust was designed around biological inheritance.””
Vittorio looked down.
“You’re saying Lucy isn’t related to me?””
“No.””
Bianca’s voice was quiet.
“I’m saying someone wanted you to believe she wasn’t.””
A strange silence followed.
Vittorio looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Bianca stepped closer.
“It means the DNA test was changed.””
His expression hardened.
“Impossible.””
“Is it?””
She smiled slightly.
“Your father controlled the hospital where the test was processed.””
Vittorio remembered.
The private clinic.
The family-owned medical center.
The doctor who had personally delivered the results.
A doctor who had worked with his father for decades.
His stomach tightened.
“Why?””
Bianca looked at him.
“Because Elena found out the truth.””
“What truth?””
“That Lucy was the key to something bigger.””
Vittorio slammed the document onto the table.
“Stop speaking in riddles.””
For the first time, Bianca looked nervous.
“She wasn’t just a child.””
The sentence made him angry.
“She was a child.””
“Yes.””
Bianca nodded.
“And that’s why Elena tried to protect her.””
“Protect her from what?””
Bianca looked toward the staircase.
“From this family.””
Vittorio stared at her.
“You expect me to believe Elena feared us?””
“I expect you to look at the evidence.””
She pointed toward the document.
“Because the person who can prove everything is alive.””
Vittorio froze.
“What?””
Bianca reached into her purse again.
This time, she pulled out an old photograph.
She placed it on the table.
Vittorio looked down.
The photograph showed Elena.
Young.
Smiling.
Holding a newborn baby.
But there was someone else beside her.
A woman Vittorio did not recognize.
A woman whose face looked strangely familiar.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten note.
*“If anything happens to me, tell Vittorio the truth about Sofia.””*
Vittorio looked up.
“Sofia?””
Bianca nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who is Sofia?””
Nobody answered.
Then Emma walked into the room.
She was pale.
Terrified.
“Mr. Romano…”
Vittorio turned.
“What?””
Emma looked at the photograph.
Then she whispered:
“That’s her.””
“Who?””
Emma pointed at the woman beside Elena.
“The woman from the second recording.””
The room froze.
Vittorio stared.
“You’ve seen her?””
Emma nodded slowly.
“She came to this house last month.””
“When?””
“When you were away on your business trip.””
Vittorio felt a chill.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Emma looked down.
“Because Bianca threatened Lucy.””
His anger returned.
“What did she say?””
Emma’s voice shook.
“She said if I told you, Lucy would disappear before you came home.””
The silence became unbearable.
Vittorio looked toward the staircase.
His daughter was upstairs.
Safe.
For now.
Then his phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
He opened it.
One sentence appeared.
*“Your wife is not Lucy’s enemy. She is only the person they hired to keep you distracted.””*
Vittorio stared at the screen.
Another message arrived immediately.
This time with an image.
A security camera photo.
From inside his own house.
The timestamp was from three nights earlier.
Lucy was asleep in her room.
Standing beside her bed was a woman.
The same woman from the photograph.
Sofia.

And beneath the image was one final message.
*“Ask your father why he let her back into the Romano house.””*
