Chapter 9: The Woman Who Started Everything
The address on the screen belonged to a place Julian Sterling had not visited in twelve years.
Sterling Manor.
The old family estate outside the city.
The place where Charles Sterling took his final breath.
The place where Julian had stood beside his father’s hospital bed and watched a man who never showed weakness finally become silent.
The place where Julian thought he had lost the last connection to his past.
Now someone was telling him the answers were waiting there.
And the person who sent the message was supposed to be dead.
His grandmother.
Amelia Sterling.
Julian stared at the screen.
Nobody spoke.
Even the penthouse seemed to hold its breath.
Finally, Victoria whispered:
“She’s alive.””
Julian turned.
“You knew?””
Victoria shook her head quickly.
“No.””
But her expression betrayed her.
“You knew something.””
Victoria looked away.
Julian’s voice became colder.
“Everyone knows something.””
Nobody answered.
“That’s the problem.””
He looked at the people around him.
“My entire life has been a room full of people whispering around me while I’m standing in the middle.””
He grabbed his coat.
“Not anymore.””
Elena stepped forward.
“I’m coming with you.””
Julian looked at her.
“No.””
Her face fell.
“You don’t trust me.””
“That’s not why.””
“Then why?””
Julian looked at Leo and Noah.
“Because I spent four years believing I lost you.””
His voice softened.
“And I just got you back.””
Elena’s eyes filled.
“You think I’m leaving them again?””
“No.””
Julian shook his head.
“I think I can’t risk losing anyone else.””
The words silenced her.
Because she understood.
Not as a billionaire.
Not as a businessman.
As a father.
Mara stepped forward.
“I’ll stay with the boys.””
Julian looked at her.
The woman who had entered his home as a stranger.
The woman his sons trusted before anyone else.
He nodded.
“Thank you.””
Leo grabbed Julian’s hand.
“Daddy.””
Julian looked down.
“Yes?””
The boy hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Don’t go where Grandpa is.””
Everyone froze.
Julian crouched.
“Why?””
Leo looked scared.
“Because he’s not alone.””
A chill moved through the room.
“What does that mean?””
Leo shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
Noah stepped closer.
“He was angry.””
Julian stared.
“Who?””
Noah looked toward the old family photograph on the wall.
“Grandpa.””
Julian felt a strange pressure in his chest.
His children remembered things they should not remember.
Things nobody had told them.
Things from a night they were too young to understand.
“How?”” Julian whispered.
Elena came closer.
“Trauma doesn’t always erase memories.””
She looked at the twins.
“Sometimes it hides them.””
Julian looked at his sons.
Then nodded.
“Stay here.””
He looked at Adrian.
“You’re coming too.””
The doctor raised an eyebrow.
“Why?””
“Because every answer leads back to you.””
Adrian sighed.
“I expected that.””
Victoria stepped forward.
“Julian.””
He stopped.
She looked broken.
“I know I don’t deserve your trust.””
He said nothing.
“But there is something you need to know before you go.””
Julian waited.
Victoria swallowed.
“Charles Sterling wasn’t trying to create a perfect heir.””
Julian frowned.
“Then what was he trying to do?””
Victoria looked at Elena.
“He was trying to recreate someone.””
The words felt familiar.
Julian remembered the letter.
*You were created from mine.*
His grandmother.
“Who?””
Victoria’s voice dropped.
“His mother.””
Julian stared.
“Amelia?””
Victoria nodded.
“Charles believed his mother was extraordinary.””
“That doesn’t explain anything.””
“He believed intelligence, personality, and memory could be passed on artificially.””
Julian felt sick.
“He was trying to clone a person?””
Adrian answered.
“Not exactly.””
Julian looked at him.
“Then what?””
“Create someone similar.””
The doctor’s voice was quiet.
“A successor.””
Julian laughed bitterly.
“So I was supposed to be a replacement.””
“No.””
Adrian looked at him.
“That was what Charles believed.””
The distinction mattered.
Julian hated that it did.
He left the penthouse with Adrian twenty minutes later.
The drive to Sterling Manor was silent.
For the first time in years, Julian wasn’t thinking about business.
He wasn’t thinking about money.
He was thinking about identity.
Who was he?
A son?
An experiment?
A mistake?
A miracle?
When they reached the estate, Julian immediately noticed something wrong.
The gates were open.
The security lights were off.
The house looked abandoned.
But someone was inside.
Adrian noticed too.
“She’s expecting us.””
Julian looked at him.
“How do you know?””
“Because Amelia Sterling never left anything to chance.””
They entered.
The old house smelled exactly as Julian remembered.
Wood.
Dust.
Old books.
Memories.
He walked through the hallway.
Every photograph showed the same thing.
The Sterling family.
Generations of power.
Generations of control.
Then he stopped.
A photograph he had never seen before.
A young Charles.
A young Victoria’s father.
Adrian.
And a woman standing between them.
Amelia Sterling.
Behind the photograph was a note.
Julian removed it.
Three words.
*The first attempt.*
His stomach tightened.
“What is this?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
Julian looked at him.
“You know.””
The doctor’s face changed.
“I thought that program ended.””
“What program?””
Adrian looked around the house.
“The first attempt to create a Sterling successor.””
Julian stared.
“And me?””
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
A voice came from upstairs.
“You were the second.””
Julian froze.
Every person in the room looked up.
Slow footsteps descended.
An elderly woman appeared.
Gray hair.
Elegant clothes.
Sharp eyes.
She looked exactly like the old Sterling portraits.
Amelia Sterling.
Alive.
Julian couldn’t move.
The woman smiled faintly.
“Hello, Julian.””
His voice came out cold.
“You’re dead.””
Amelia tilted her head.
“So everyone believed.””
Julian stepped forward.
“Why?””
“Because Charles needed the world to think he was in control.””
“What does that mean?””
Amelia reached the bottom of the stairs.
“It means my son spent his entire life trying to prove he was better than me.””
Julian stared.
“And was he?””
A small smile appeared on her face.
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
“He was my greatest failure.””
Julian felt anger rise.
“People died because of your family.””
Amelia looked at him.
“I know.””
The calmness disturbed him.
“You know?””
“Yes.””
“You knew Elena survived.””
“Yes.””
“You knew my children were taken.””
“Yes.””
“You knew I spent four years believing everyone I loved was gone.””
Amelia’s expression finally changed.
A little sadness.
“I know.””
Julian clenched his fists.
“And you did nothing?””
Amelia looked at him.
“Because I was waiting for you.””
The words made him stop.
“Waiting for me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She walked closer.
“Because Charles was wrong about one thing.””
“What?””
“You were never his creation.””
She touched the old photograph.
“You were mine.””
Julian stared.
“What does that mean?””
Amelia looked toward Adrian.
“Tell him.””
Adrian went silent.
Julian turned.
“Tell me.””
The doctor took a breath.
“Your mother…”
He stopped.
Julian’s voice sharpened.
“My mother.””
Adrian nodded.
“Your biological mother was Amelia’s daughter.””
The world stopped.
Julian stared.
“What?””
Amelia’s eyes filled.
“Her name was Clara.””
The name meant nothing.
But somehow, hearing it hurt.
“Where is she?””
Amelia looked down.
“She died giving birth.””
Julian froze.
“Then how?””
Amelia whispered:
“Because Charles lied about that too.””
Julian looked at her.
“Explain.””
Amelia walked toward a locked cabinet.
She opened it.
Inside was a file.
She handed it to him.
The first page contained a photograph.
A woman.
Young.
Beautiful.
Holding a baby.
Julian stopped breathing.
Because the baby was him.
The woman was smiling.
And underneath the photograph was a handwritten note.
*My son Julian.*
His hands shook.
Then he saw the date.
The date was impossible.
Because it was years before Charles Sterling met his mother.
Julian looked up.
“How?””
Amelia stared at him.
“Because Charles didn’t create you.””
A pause.
“He stole you.””
The room went silent.
Julian looked back at the file.
“What did he steal?””
Amelia’s expression became serious.
“Your identity.””
The lights suddenly went out.
A crash came from downstairs.
Adrian turned sharply.
“Someone followed us.””
Julian reached for his phone.
No signal.
Then a voice echoed from the darkness.
A voice Julian recognized.
Not from the past.
From the present.
“Julian.””
Everyone froze.
Victoria’s father stepped into the room.
But he was not alone.
He was holding a gun.
And beside him stood someone Julian never expected to see.
A woman.
A woman who looked exactly like Elena.
Amelia whispered:
“That is why Charles wanted you hidden.””
Julian stared.
“Who is she?””
The woman smiled.
May you like
And said:
“I’m your sister.””
