Chapter 8: The Woman Who Gave Him A Name
Julian Sterling had spent his entire life chasing one question.
Why had his father never loved him?
Not in the way other fathers loved their sons.
Charles Sterling had provided everything.
The best schools.
The best clothes.
The best opportunities.
But never warmth.
Never pride.
Never a simple “I’m proud of you.””
Julian had spent decades believing he was the problem.
That he wasn’t impressive enough.
Strong enough.
Successful enough.
Now, standing in the middle of his own home, watching a recording from a dead man, he discovered something far worse.
He had been trying to earn love from a man who was never his father.
The room remained silent.
Nobody knew what to say.
Not Victoria.
Not Elena.
Not Adrian.
Not even Julian.
The billionaire who had negotiated billion-dollar deals without hesitation could not process one sentence.
*You were never my son.*
Finally, Julian spoke.
“No.””
The word came quietly.
Almost like he was arguing with reality itself.
“No.””
He looked at the screen.
The recording had ended.
The image of Charles Sterling was gone.
But the damage remained.
“That’s impossible.””
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
“Julian…”
“No.””
He turned toward her.
“You knew.””
She froze.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“But you knew something.””
Elena looked down.
That was enough.
Julian felt the betrayal before she even spoke.
“How long?””
Her voice shook.
“Since before the twins were born.””
The room seemed to tilt.
“Before?””
Elena nodded.
“I found documents.””
“What documents?””
“Adoption records.””
Julian stared.
“I was adopted?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
And that confused him more.
Elena stepped closer.
“You weren’t adopted.””
“Then what?””
She took a breath.
“You were created.””
The words sounded impossible.
Julian looked at Adrian.
The doctor looked away.
“Created?””
Elena nodded slowly.
“Charles Sterling and Adrian were involved in a private fertility project.””
Julian felt sick.
“A project.””
“Yes.””
“Using me?””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than a lie.
Julian stepped back.
His entire life replayed differently.
His father’s obsession with his intelligence.
His medical tests as a child.
The strange specialists.
The endless evaluations.
The way Charles always talked about “potential.””
It had never been about raising a son.
It had been about developing an investment.
A result.
A product.
“What was my mother’s name?””
Elena went silent.
Julian’s voice hardened.
“Tell me.””
Adrian looked at Elena.
She shook her head.
“No.””
Julian turned.
“No?””
“I promised her.””
“Who?””
Elena’s eyes filled.
“Your mother.””
The room went quiet.
Julian’s voice became barely audible.
“She’s alive?””
Elena didn’t answer.
She didn’t have to.
The silence was enough.
Julian walked away.
He reached the window overlooking Manhattan.
The city stretched beneath him.
Millions of people.
Millions of lives.
And suddenly he felt like he had never known his own.
“Who am I?””
Nobody answered.
The question was not directed at them.
It was directed at himself.
After a moment, Elena approached.
“Julian.””
He didn’t turn.
“You knew.””
“I knew part of it.””
“You knew I was created.””
“Yes.””
“And you still loved me?””
The question broke something in her.
She stepped closer.
“Julian, I loved you before I knew any of this.””
He finally looked at her.
“Before?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
Elena smiled sadly.
“The first time you defended me.””
Julian frowned.
“What?””
“When Charles introduced me as someone who was only interested in your money.””
Julian remembered.
A dinner years ago.
Charles humiliating Elena.
Calling her temporary.
Calling her beneath their family.
Julian had walked out with her that night.
He had forgotten.
She had not.
“You looked at me like I was a person,” Elena whispered.
“That was the first time I knew.””
Julian’s expression softened.
But only for a second.
Because another thought appeared.
“My children.””
Elena looked toward the twins.
Julian’s voice shook.
“Are they part of this?””
“No.””
“Are they?””
“No.””
Her answer was immediate.
“They are ours.””
Julian searched her face.
“You’re sure?””
Elena placed a hand over her heart.
“I carried them.””
A tear fell.
“I felt them move before I ever held them.””
She looked at Leo and Noah.
“They were never an experiment.””
Julian closed his eyes.
The relief was overwhelming.
For years, he had feared losing them.
Now he had to fear losing himself.
Behind him, Adrian spoke.
“There is one more thing.””
Julian turned.
He hated that man.
But he needed the truth.
“What?””
Adrian looked exhausted.
“Charles wasn’t the only one involved.””
Julian’s expression changed.
“Who else?””
Adrian looked at Victoria.
Everyone followed his gaze.
Victoria went pale.
“No.””
Julian stared.
“What?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Victoria.””
Her breathing became unsteady.
“I didn’t know.””
“What didn’t you know?””
Adrian answered.
“Your wife’s family was involved.””
Julian looked at Victoria.
Her face collapsed.
“Is that true?””
She whispered:
“My father worked with Charles.””
Julian stared.
“Your father?””
Victoria nodded.
“He was one of Charles’s investors.””
“And you knew?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I found out later.””
“When?””
“After Elena disappeared.””
Julian’s eyes narrowed.
“Then why marry me?””
Victoria started crying.
“Because I thought I could fix it.””
Nobody spoke.
“I thought if I stayed close to you, I could protect you.””
Julian laughed bitterly.
“Protect me?””
“I tried.””
“You lied to me.””
“Yes.””
“You hid Elena.””
“Yes.””
“You let me believe she was dead.””
Victoria closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The honesty was almost worse.
“Why?””
Victoria looked at Elena.
“Because Adrian threatened her.””
Julian turned.
“What?””
Elena’s face changed.
“What did you say?””
Victoria looked devastated.
“He told me if I helped Elena disappear, he would expose Julian’s origin.””
Julian froze.
“My origin?””
“He said Charles created you because he wanted a perfect heir.””
Victoria looked at Julian.
“And if the world knew…”
She stopped.
Julian finished for her.
“They would see me as something unnatural.””
Silence.
That was the cruelest part.
Not the experiment.
Not the lies.
The fact that someone had convinced people his existence was something to hide.
Julian looked at Leo and Noah.
Then at Elena.
Then at himself.
A person built from secrets.
A father who had never been a father.
A mother he had never met.
A life designed by people who thought they owned him.
Then Elena reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I was waiting for the right moment.””
Julian looked at it.
“What is it?””
“Something your mother wrote.””
His hands shook slightly.
“My mother?””
Elena nodded.
“She knew Charles would try to control the truth.””
Julian opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
But the first line made his chest tighten.
*Dear Julian,*
*If you are reading this, then they finally told you what you are.*
He stopped.
The words blurred.
He forced himself to continue.
*You are not a project.*
A tear fell before he realized it.
*You are not a mistake.*
The room disappeared.
For a moment, he wasn’t a billionaire.
He wasn’t a son.
He wasn’t a creation.
He was just a child reading words from a mother he never knew.
Then he reached the final paragraph.
And everything changed.
*There is one truth Charles never discovered.*
Julian held his breath.
*You were not created from his design.*
A pause.
*You were created from mine.*
His hands froze.
Elena looked confused.
Adrian stepped forward.
“Impossible.””
Julian looked up.
“What?””
Adrian stared at the letter.
“That handwriting.””
“What?””
His face turned pale.
“That’s not your mother.””
Julian frowned.
“Then whose is it?””
Adrian whispered:
“The woman who started everything.””
The lights flickered.
Again.
The security system activated.
A new message appeared on the screen.
This time there was no video.
Only a name.
A name nobody expected.
A name that made Elena step back.
A name that made Adrian lose all color.
*Amelia Sterling.*
Julian stared.
“Who is that?””
Nobody answered.
Then Elena whispered:
“Your grandmother.””
Julian looked at the screen.
“My grandmother?””
Elena nodded slowly.
“The woman Charles spent his entire life trying to erase.””
A second message appeared.
Short.
Terrifying.
*Julian, come find me before they do.*
And beneath it was an address.
May you like
An address that was impossible.
Because it was the same location where Charles Sterling had died twelve years earlier.
