Chapter 7: The Man Behind The Experiment
The words echoed through the penthouse long after the security officer stopped speaking.
*The experiment was you.*
Julian Sterling had heard threats before.
Rivals had promised to ruin him.
Enemies had promised to expose him.
People had tried to destroy his company, his reputation, and his name.
But this was different.
Because the person who had said those words knew something nobody else should have known.
Something about him.
Something about his family.
Something about the night his entire life changed.
Julian slowly turned toward Adrian Vale.
For the first time since entering the penthouse, the doctor looked human.
Not confident.
Not controlled.
Not like someone who had planned every move.
Afraid.
“What does that mean?”” Julian asked.
Adrian didn’t answer.
Julian took a step closer.
“I asked you a question.””
The doctor looked at Elena.
She looked just as confused.
“I don’t know,” she whispered.
Julian stared.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
Elena shook her head.
“I thought I understood everything.””
That sentence frightened him.
Because Elena had spent four years hiding from people who wanted her silent.
If she didn’t know the answer, then whoever was behind this was someone even she couldn’t predict.
Julian turned back to the speaker.
“Who accessed the archive?””
The guard replied immediately.
“We’re checking cameras now, sir.””
“Show me.””
A few seconds later, the security system projected footage onto the wall.
The image was grainy.
Dark.
A figure walking through the underground medical archive beneath the old west wing.
Julian stared.
The person was wearing a black coat.
Their face was hidden.
But the way they moved…
Something about it felt familiar.
The figure stopped in front of the archive door.
Then looked directly at the camera.
Julian leaned closer.
The person lifted a hand.
Held up a piece of paper.
Then the camera went black.
Everyone stood silent.
“What was on the paper?”” Julian asked.
The guard hesitated.
“We’re trying to enhance the image.””
“Do it.””
The screen flickered.
The paper became clearer.
A handwritten message appeared.
Julian read it.
And his expression changed.
Because the handwriting was familiar.
Not Elena’s.
Not Victoria’s.
Someone else’s.
*You should have remembered, Julian.*
His stomach tightened.
“I know that handwriting.””
Elena looked at him.
“Whose is it?””
Julian didn’t answer immediately.
Because he was afraid of the answer.
Then he whispered:
“My father’s.””
Nobody moved.
Julian Sterling’s father had been dead for twelve years.
Charles Sterling.
The man who built the foundation of the Sterling empire.
The man Julian spent his childhood trying to impress.
The man who taught him that emotions were weaknesses.
The man who disappeared from Julian’s life long before his death.
Victoria looked confused.
“Your father?””
Julian nodded slowly.
“But that’s impossible.””
Adrian finally spoke.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
Adrian’s voice was quiet.
“It’s not.””
Julian’s eyes turned cold.
“You knew?””
The doctor didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Julian moved toward him.
“You knew my father was involved.””
“I knew he had information.””
“What information?””
Adrian looked at Elena.
Then at the twins.
Then back at Julian.
“Your father knew about the research before I did.””
Julian felt anger rising.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
Julian shook his head.
“My father hated weakness. He hated anything he couldn’t control. He would never involve himself in medical research.””
Adrian gave a bitter smile.
“You don’t know your father as well as you think.””
The sentence hurt.
Because a small part of Julian feared it was true.
Charles Sterling had always been a mystery.
Even to his own son.
He had controlled every part of Julian’s childhood.
His education.
His career.
His friendships.
His future.
But there had always been one thing Julian could never understand.
Why his father became distant after Julian turned eighteen.
Why Charles suddenly stopped asking about his life.
Why he refused to meet Elena when Julian introduced her.
Julian looked at Elena.
“He knew about you.””
Elena nodded.
“He knew about me before I knew about him.””
“What does that mean?””
She looked at Adrian.
“He was one of the people who funded Adrian’s early work.””
The room went quiet.
Julian stared.
“My father funded him?””
“Yes.””
“And you knew?””
Adrian nodded.
“I discovered the connection later.””
Julian laughed once.
A cold, empty sound.
“So my entire life was built on this?””
Nobody answered.
The twins moved closer to Mara.
Julian noticed.
Even now, they sensed danger.
He crouched down.
“It’s okay.””
Leo looked at him.
“Daddy.””
Julian froze.
It was the first time Leo had called him that since Elena appeared.
A simple word.
But it almost broke him.
“Yes?””
Leo looked toward Adrian.
“He hurt Mommy.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
Julian immediately stood.
“What did you say?””
Leo’s hands started shaking.
Mara knelt beside him.
“Take your time.””
Leo looked at Elena.
“She cried.””
Elena covered her mouth.
The boy continued.
“The man said Mommy had to sleep.””
Julian felt cold.
“What man?””
Leo pointed.
At Adrian.
Nobody spoke.
Adrian took a step back.
“No.””
Julian stared at him.
“What did you do?””
“I didn’t hurt him.””
“You drugged my son.””
“No.””
Adrian’s voice became sharper.
“I protected him.””
Julian’s restraint broke.
“You keep saying that word like it means something.””
He grabbed the doctor’s coat.
“You took my children.””
Security moved instantly.
But Julian didn’t care.
“You erased their memories.””
“Because they saw something dangerous.””
“What?””
Adrian looked at Leo.
Then whispered:
“They saw you.””
The room froze.
Julian released him.
“What?””
Adrian straightened his coat.
“The night they were born, your children weren’t the only ones in danger.””
Julian stared.
“Explain.””
Adrian took a breath.
“Your father had arranged for the children to be moved.””
Julian frowned.
“Moved where?””
“I don’t know.””
“Who stopped him?””
Adrian looked at Elena.
“She did.””
Julian looked at her.
Elena’s face was full of pain.
“I found out what Charles was planning.””
“What was he planning?””
Elena hesitated.
Then said:
“To take the twins away.””
Julian shook his head.
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
“Why would my father want my children?””
Adrian looked at him.
“Because of what they represented.””
Julian’s expression hardened.
“They were babies.””
“No.””
Adrian shook his head.
“They were proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Adrian looked toward the hidden room.
“Proof that Charles Sterling’s greatest achievement wasn’t building an empire.””
A pause.
“It was creating a bloodline.””
The words made no sense.
Julian stared.
“My father wasn’t trying to protect the company.””
“No.””
“He was trying to protect something else.””
“Yes.””
“What?””
Adrian looked at the door.
At the place where someone had accessed the archive.
Then he said:
“The Sterling family was built on a secret.””
The lights flickered.
Everyone looked up.
The security system made a sharp sound.
A new video file appeared on the screen.
No one had opened it.
No one had touched the system.
But it began playing.
A man appeared.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Sitting in a hospital room.
Julian stopped breathing.
Because he recognized him immediately.
Charles Sterling.
His dead father.
The recording began.
“Julian.””
His father looked directly into the camera.
“If you are watching this, then I failed.””
Julian couldn’t move.
Charles continued.
“I spent my entire life protecting the Sterling name.””
A pause.
“But the truth is, the Sterling name was never mine to protect.””
The room became silent.
Then Charles said the sentence that changed everything.
“Julian, you were never my son.””
Nobody breathed.
The video continued.
“You were the first successful result.””
Elena grabbed Julian’s arm.
Victoria covered her mouth.
Adrian looked away.
And Julian Sterling stood frozen as the man he spent his entire life calling father revealed the one secret that explained everything.
The recording ended with six words.
May you like
Six words that destroyed the last piece of his identity.
*Ask Elena who your mother was.*
