Chapter 6: The Original Birth Certificate
The woman standing in the doorway looked exactly like someone who had been hiding from the world.
Evelyn Hart.
Victoria’s mother.
The woman who had attended every Sterling family event.
The woman who had smiled beside Julian at charity dinners.
The woman who had hugged Leo and Noah while knowing they had been robbed of four years of their lives.
But that was not what made Julian unable to move.
It was the paper in her hand.
The original birth certificate.
The one that should not exist.
The one that had been replaced.
Julian stared at it.
Then at Evelyn.
Then back at the document.
“What is that?””
Evelyn’s fingers tightened around the paper.
“A mistake that should have been corrected years ago.””
Julian’s expression hardened.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“No more.””
Everyone in the room looked at him.
“No more half-truths. No more people telling me they were protecting me. No more secrets hidden behind sad faces.””
He stepped forward.
“You walked into my home holding a document that proves someone changed my children’s records.””
Evelyn said nothing.
“Explain.””
Victoria looked terrified.
“Mom…”
Evelyn turned toward her.
And the look between them told Julian everything.
They had spoken about this.
Many times.
“You should have told him,” Evelyn said.
Victoria’s eyes filled.
“I tried.””
“No.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“You waited.””
The words cut deep.
Victoria looked away.
Julian took the document from Evelyn’s hand.
The paper felt ordinary.
That was the strangest part.
Something capable of destroying his entire understanding of his family looked like nothing more than ink and paper.
He read.
Then read again.
His fingers began to shake.
The names were different.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
The original record listed Elena Marquez as the mother.
Julian Sterling as the father.
But beneath the official information was a handwritten correction.
A note from the hospital.
*Record modification authorized by family representative.*
Julian looked up.
“Family representative?””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
“Who authorized this?””
Silence.
Julian’s eyes moved slowly around the room.
Then stopped on Victoria.
Her face collapsed.
“No.””
The word escaped before anyone accused her.
Julian felt something inside him break.
“Victoria.””
“I didn’t do it.””
“You just answered a question I didn’t ask.””
She covered her mouth.
“I didn’t change the records.””
“Then who did?””
Victoria looked at her mother.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
And Julian understood.
“You.””
Evelyn didn’t deny it.
The room became silent.
“You changed my children’s birth records.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“I changed what I was told to change.””
Julian stared.
“By who?””
Nobody answered.
He stepped closer.
“By who?””
Evelyn’s voice dropped.
“Adrian.””
Julian turned toward the doctor.
Adrian remained still.
But his expression had changed.
The confidence was gone.
“Why?”” Julian asked.
Adrian looked at the twins.
“Because they were in danger.””
Julian almost laughed.
“You keep saying that.””
He pointed toward his sons.
“Everyone keeps using that word.””
His voice cracked.
“But nobody tells me what the danger was.””
Adrian looked away.
Elena stepped forward.
“Because the danger was never the babies.””
Julian looked at her.
“What was it?””
Elena’s eyes locked onto Adrian.
“Me.””
The room went quiet.
Julian stared.
“Why would you be dangerous?””
“Because I found the files.””
“What files?””
“The files showing what Adrian was doing.””
Adrian interrupted.
“You don’t understand.””
Julian turned.
“I understand enough.””
“No, you don’t.””
Adrian’s voice became sharper.
“You think this is about money? Power? Experiments?””
He looked around the room.
“It’s bigger than that.””
Julian’s expression didn’t change.
“Then explain.””
Adrian hesitated.
That hesitation was the closest thing to an answer.
Elena walked toward Julian.
“I found a pattern.””
“What pattern?””
“Families with wealth.””
Julian frowned.
“What?””
“Adrian targeted people who had influence. People who could protect him. People who could make problems disappear.””
Adrian shook his head.
“That’s ridiculous.””
Elena continued.
“He wasn’t just treating patients.””
Julian looked at Adrian.
“What was he doing?””
Elena took a breath.
“Creating leverage.””
Nobody spoke.
“What does that mean?””
“It means he collected information.””
“About who?””
“Everyone.””
Julian looked at the doctor.
“You kept secrets about your patients.””
Adrian’s face hardened.
“You have no idea what you’re accusing me of.””
“No.””
Julian stepped closer.
“I have no idea what I’m supposed to believe anymore.””
A small voice interrupted them.
“Daddy?””
Julian turned.
Leo was looking at him.
The boy’s face was pale.
Julian immediately moved toward him.
“What is it?””
Leo pointed at Evelyn.
“She was there.””
Everyone froze.
Evelyn’s face changed.
Julian looked at his son.
“Where?””
Leo struggled.
The words came slowly.
“The room.””
“What room?””
“The baby room.””
Julian felt a chill.
The hospital.
Leo continued.
“She was crying.””
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Julian stared.
“You remember her?””
Leo nodded.
“She said sorry.””
Evelyn began crying.
“No…”
Julian looked at her.
“What did you say sorry for?””
Evelyn couldn’t answer.
Noah stepped closer.
Then whispered:
“You took Mommy away.””
The sentence shattered the room.
Victoria looked at her mother.
“Mom?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“I didn’t know.””
Julian turned.
“What didn’t you know?””
Evelyn wiped her tears.
“I thought Elena had agreed.””
Elena’s face went blank.
“Agreed to what?””
Evelyn looked at her.
“To disappear.””
Julian felt like the ground moved.
“What?””
Evelyn looked between them.
“Adrian told me Elena wanted to leave.””
“No.””
Elena’s voice was barely audible.
“He told me you wanted a new life.””
Julian looked at Elena.
She looked devastated.
“I never said that.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“I know that now.””
“Then why?””
“Because Adrian showed me documents.””
“What documents?””
Evelyn looked down.
“Documents saying Julian had planned to take the children away.””
Julian froze.
“That’s impossible.””
“Yes.””
Elena whispered.
“Because he forged them.””
Everyone looked at Adrian.
The doctor remained silent.
Julian stared.
“You made everyone think I abandoned Elena?””
Adrian said nothing.
“You made her think I betrayed her?””
Still nothing.
Then Elena spoke softly.
“That’s why I didn’t come back.””
Julian looked at her.
“What?””
She looked at him with tears in her eyes.
“I thought you chose them.””
His heart broke.
“I thought you left me.””
“No.””
“I thought you took our children and built a new life.””
Julian shook his head.
“I spent four years believing you were dead.””
Elena’s expression collapsed.
“I spent four years believing you hated me.””
The pain between them filled the room.
A pain created by a lie.
A lie carefully designed.
Julian turned toward Adrian.
“You destroyed two families.””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“You’re missing the point.””
Julian stared.
“What point?””
Adrian looked at the twins.
“The boys were never supposed to remember.””
A cold silence followed.
Julian’s eyes narrowed.
“What did you do?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
“What did you do to my sons?””
Adrian looked away.
And that was enough.
Julian moved forward.
But before he could reach him, the security alarm sounded again.
This time different.
More urgent.
A guard’s voice came through the speaker.
“Mr. Sterling.””
Julian pressed the intercom.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“Someone has accessed the private medical archive.””
Julian frowned.
“What archive?””
The guard hesitated.
“The one hidden under the old west wing.””
Everyone froze.
Julian looked at Elena.
Her face had lost all color.
“What?””
She whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because the archive was destroyed.””
A second later, the guard continued.
“Mr. Sterling…”
Julian listened.
“The person accessing the files left a message.””
His blood went cold.
“What message?””
The guard’s voice shook.
“Your children were never the experiment.””
Nobody moved.
Then the guard added:
“The experiment was you.””
Julian slowly looked at Adrian.
The doctor’s face changed.
May you like
For the first time…
He looked afraid.
