Amused

Chapter 5: The Night That Was Erased

Julian Sterling had spent four years trying to remember a night he was never allowed to see clearly.

The hospital.

The rain outside the windows.

The smell of antiseptic.

The sound of machines.

The moment someone told him Elena was gone.

He remembered fragments.

Only fragments.

A nurse crying.

A doctor refusing to meet his eyes.

Victoria holding his arm.

Someone telling him to focus on his sons.

But the actual hours surrounding Leo and Noah’s birth?

A blur.

A missing piece of his own life.

And now Elena was standing in front of him, alive, asking the one question that made his entire body go cold.

Why didn’t his sons remember the night they were born?

Julian looked at Leo and Noah.

The boys were still holding Elena’s hands.

They looked peaceful.

Safe.

But suddenly, he wondered what memories had been taken from them.

And why.

“Everyone out,” Julian said.

Nobody moved.

His voice hardened.

“I said everyone out.””

Adrian Vale raised an eyebrow.

“You think separating people will give you answers?””

“No.””

Julian looked at him.

“But it will tell me who is afraid of being alone with the truth.””

The doctor’s expression changed slightly.

A small reaction.

But Julian saw it.

He had built an empire by noticing tiny weaknesses.

And Adrian Vale had just revealed one.

Victoria walked toward the door.

“Julian…”

He stopped her.

“Not you.””

She froze.

“You stay.””

Her face fell.

Elena looked at him carefully.

“Are you sure?””

Julian turned toward her.

“No.””

The honesty surprised everyone.

“I’m not sure about anything anymore.””

His eyes moved between the three people who had been hiding pieces of his life.

“But I know I’m done being the only person who doesn’t know what happened to me.””

Adrian sighed.

“You’re making this emotional.””

Julian stepped closer.

“My children stopped speaking after the day they were born.””

His voice lowered.

“That is emotional.””

The doctor looked away.

Julian noticed.

“Start talking.””

Nobody answered.

So Julian walked to the desk and picked up the old hospital records.

The papers Elena had hidden.

The papers Victoria had protected.

The papers that had survived four years.

“First question.””

He looked at Adrian.

“Why were the birth records changed?””

Adrian remained silent.

Julian turned.

“Victoria?””

She closed her eyes.

“I don’t know everything.””

“But you know something.””

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

Julian waited.

Victoria looked older suddenly.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like she had been carrying a weight too heavy for too long.

“After Elena gave birth, Adrian told everyone there were complications.””

Julian stared.

“What complications?””

“He said the babies were unstable.””

“They were.””

Victoria nodded.

“But not because of the birth.””

Julian felt his heartbeat increase.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria looked at Elena.

“She was already investigating him.””

Julian frowned.

“Investigating what?””

Elena answered.

“His research.””

Her voice was calm now.

Too calm.

The way people sounded when they had repeated a painful story thousands of times in their own heads.

“Adrian had created a private program using genetic testing and fertility treatments.””

Julian looked at Adrian.

“You experimented on patients.””

Adrian immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Elena stepped forward.

“Yes.””

Adrian glared at her.

“You don’t understand what you saw.””

“I understood enough.””

“No, Elena. You saw data without understanding the science.””

Julian looked between them.

“You’re both avoiding the same thing.””

They stopped.

“What happened to my children?””

Silence.

Then Elena spoke.

“They were born healthy.””

Julian blinked.

“What?””

“They were healthy.””

She looked at Leo and Noah.

“They were crying. They were moving. They were holding my fingers.””

Her voice broke.

“Then Adrian came into the room.””

Julian’s expression changed.

Adrian’s face remained unreadable.

But his hands tightened.

Julian saw it.

“You were there.””

Adrian said nothing.

“You were there when they were born.””

“Yes.””

“And Elena?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you tell me she died?””

Adrian looked away.

That was the first time Julian saw uncertainty.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Regret.

“I made a mistake.””

Julian stared.

“A mistake?””

His laugh was sharp.

“You erased four years of my life.””

“I was trying to prevent something worse.””

Julian’s patience snapped.

“You don’t get to decide what my family can survive.””

The twins moved closer to Elena.

She immediately lowered herself.

“It’s okay.””

Julian noticed.

Even now, even with everything happening, Elena’s first instinct was protecting the children.

Not herself.

That mattered.

“Why don’t they remember?”” Julian asked.

Elena went silent.

Victoria looked down.

Adrian said nothing.

Julian’s voice sharpened.

“Answer me.””

Elena whispered:

“Because they were given something.””

Julian froze.

“What?””

“A medication.””

The room seemed to shrink.

“Why?””

Elena’s eyes filled.

“Because they saw something.””

Julian looked at Leo.

At Noah.

“What did they see?””

Elena hesitated.

And that hesitation terrified him.

“Me.””

Julian frowned.

“What?””

“They saw what happened after they were born.””

A cold feeling moved through him.

“What happened after?””

Elena looked at Victoria.

Victoria looked away.

“Tell him,” Elena said.

Victoria shook her head.

“I can’t.””

“You have to.””

Julian turned toward Victoria.

“Tell me.””

Victoria’s lips trembled.

“After the delivery…”

She stopped.

Then forced herself to continue.

“Adrian told me Elena had complications.””

Julian waited.

“He said she was dying.””

Elena’s expression hardened.

“I wasn’t.””

Victoria closed her eyes.

“I believed him.””

Julian’s voice softened slightly.

“You believed him?””

“Yes.””

She wiped her tears.

“I was scared. The babies were crying. You were waiting outside. Everything was happening so fast.””

She looked at Elena.

“Then I saw Elena.””

The room became silent.

“What did you see?””

Victoria’s voice dropped.

“I saw her standing.””

Julian stopped breathing.

Standing.

Alive.

Four years ago.

After everyone told him she was dead.

“She looked at me,” Victoria whispered.

“And she said…”

Victoria’s voice broke.

“What?””

She looked at Elena.

“She said, ‘Take them away from him.’”

Julian stared.

“What?””

Elena looked horrified.

“I never said that.””

Victoria nodded.

“I know that now.””

Julian felt lost.

“Why would she say that?””

Victoria shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Elena looked at Julian.

“Because I never did.””

The twins suddenly reacted.

Leo covered his ears.

“No.””

Julian immediately moved.

“Leo?””

The little boy was shaking.

“No more.””

Mara, who had been silently standing near the doorway, stepped forward.

“He remembers.””

Everyone looked at her.

Julian frowned.

“Remembers what?””

Mara’s expression was filled with sadness.

“The hallway.””

“What hallway?””

“The hospital hallway.””

Julian looked at Leo.

“Leo?””

The boy’s breathing became faster.

Mara knelt beside him.

“It’s okay.””

Leo whispered:

“Daddy was crying.””

Julian froze.

The boy continued.

“Mommy was crying too.””

Nobody spoke.

Leo squeezed his eyes shut.

“Someone took Mommy.””

Julian’s heart broke.

“Who?””

The boy shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

Then Noah spoke.

A word.

A name.

The first clear word he had spoken in front of Julian.

“Victoria.””

The room exploded into silence.

Victoria stepped back.

“No.””

Julian looked at her.

“Noah…”

The boy pointed.

“You were there.””

Victoria’s face went completely white.

“I…”

Julian’s voice became dangerously quiet.

“What was she doing there?””

Victoria couldn’t answer.

Elena looked at her.

And the pain in Elena’s eyes was worse than anger.

“You told me you would help me.””

Victoria started crying.

“I tried.””

“No.””

Elena shook her head.

“You chose him.””

Julian looked at Adrian.

“Him?””

Adrian’s phone suddenly rang.

He glanced at the screen.

For the first time, real fear appeared on his face.

Julian noticed.

“Who is it?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

The phone rang again.

And again.

Finally, Adrian picked up.

He listened.

Then his face changed.

“What do you mean she woke up?””

Everyone froze.

Julian stared.

“She?””

Adrian slowly lowered the phone.

Nobody spoke.

Then Elena whispered:

“There’s someone else.””

Julian looked at her.

“Who?””

Elena’s face turned pale.

“The person who knows the whole truth.””

A pause.

Then she said the words that made Julian’s blood run cold.

“The woman Adrian told everyone died that night.””

Julian stared.

“Elena…”

She shook her head.

“It wasn’t me.””

The room went silent.

“The woman who died in that hospital…”

Elena looked toward the twins.

“She was someone else.””

And then the penthouse door opened.

A woman’s voice echoed through the hallway.

“Julian?””

Everyone turned.

Because Julian knew that voice too.

It was the voice from the hospital records.

The voice from the past.

The voice of the woman whose death had started everything.

And standing in the doorway was the person nobody expected.

Victoria’s mother.

May you like

Still alive.

Holding the original birth certificate of Julian’s sons.
