Chapter 9: The Daughter He Never Knew
Damon couldn’t move.
He had spent the last few hours watching his entire life collapse and rebuild itself at the same time.
Emma was alive.
Lily was his daughter.
His father had been hiding the truth.
His closest friends had lied.
But nothing prepared him for the child standing at the top of the stairs.
A child with Emma’s eyes.
Emma’s expression.
Emma’s quiet way of looking at the world.
The little girl gripped the wooden railing.
She looked nervous.
Not afraid.
Just uncertain.
Like she had spent years wondering about this exact moment.
Damon slowly whispered:
“Who are you?””
The girl didn’t answer immediately.
She looked at Lily.
Then at the photograph in Damon’s hand.
Then back at him.
“I’m Ava.””
The name felt unfamiliar.
But the connection was immediate.
Damon looked at Emma’s note.
Both of our children.
His hands began to shake.
“No…”
The word escaped before he could stop it.
Ava’s face changed.
She thought he didn’t want her.
Damon noticed.
And immediately his heart broke.
“No, sweetheart.””
He took a careful step forward.
“I didn’t mean no.””
Ava watched him.
“Mommy said you might be surprised.””
Damon’s throat tightened.
“She told you about me?””
Ava nodded.
“She said you were kind.””
Damon looked down.
After everything.
After all the pain.
Emma still told their children good things about him.
“Where is your mother?””
Ava looked toward the hallway behind her.
“She went to get something.””
“When?””
“Yesterday.””
Damon froze.
Yesterday.
The message.
Emma just found out you know the truth.
She wasn’t far away.
She had been close.
All this time.
“She left you here alone?””
Ava shook her head.
“No.””
She pointed toward the other room.
“My aunt was here.””
“Your aunt?””
Before anyone could ask another question, a woman stepped out of the doorway.
Older.
Tired.
But familiar.
Damon stared.
He knew her.
Not personally.
But from Emma’s stories.
“Sarah?””
The woman stopped.
Her eyes filled with surprise.
“You remember me.””
Damon nodded slowly.
Sarah Bennett.
Emma’s older sister.
The woman who had disappeared from their lives after Emma’s funeral.
The woman everyone said couldn’t handle the grief.
But now she was standing here.
Alive.
And clearly part of the secret.
“You knew.””
Sarah looked down.
“Yes.””
Damon felt the old anger return.
“Everyone knew.””
“No.””
Sarah shook her head.
“Not everyone.””
She looked at Lily and Ava.
“Emma only trusted a few people.””
Damon laughed quietly.
“A few people?””
He looked around.
“Everyone she trusted hid my children from me.””
Sarah flinched.
“You’re right.””
The answer surprised him.
No excuses.
No defense.
Just acceptance.
“I’m sorry.””
Damon looked away.
He had heard that word too many times.
But somehow, coming from Sarah, it sounded different.
Because she looked broken too.
“Why?””
Sarah walked closer.
“Because Emma was trying to protect you.””
Damon’s eyes hardened.
“That’s what everyone says.””
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
His voice became heavier.
“You don’t understand what five years feels like.””
Sarah looked at him.
“I do.””
A pause.
“Because Emma spent five years watching you from a distance.””
Damon froze.
“What?””
Sarah sighed.
“She never stopped loving you.””
“Then why didn’t she come home?””
Sarah looked toward Ava.
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of my father?””
Sarah was quiet.
Then:
“Of what you would become if you knew the truth.””
Damon frowned.
“I don’t understand.””
Sarah sat down.
“You need to know everything.””
Nobody interrupted.
Even Alexander stayed silent.
Sarah looked at him.
“You included.””
For the first time, Alexander looked uncomfortable.
Damon noticed.
“You know something?””
Sarah nodded.
“I know the truth about the night Emma disappeared.””
Damon sat down slowly.
“Tell me.””
Sarah took a deep breath.
“Emma found out Alexander was using your company to move money.””
Damon nodded.
“I know.””
“No.””
Sarah shook her head.
“You know the surface.””
She looked at him.
“Emma found out the money wasn’t just connected to Alexander.””
A pause.
“It was connected to you.””
The room became silent.
Damon’s chest tightened.
“I don’t understand.””
“Your company wasn’t only funded by your father.””
Sarah’s voice softened.
“Emma discovered that your signature was on documents.””
Damon stared.
“No.””
“You don’t remember signing them.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Because you weren’t told what they were.””
The words settled slowly.
Damon looked at Ethan.
“Is this true?””
Ethan looked away.
That was his answer.
Damon stood.
“Ethan.””
“I was trying to fix it.””
“Answer me.””
Ethan’s voice broke.
“Yes.””
Damon felt betrayed all over again.
“My signature?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Ethan looked ashamed.
“Alexander had you sign documents during the early years of the company.””
“I read everything.””
“No.””
Ethan shook his head.
“You trusted him.””
Damon went silent.
Because that was the truth he hated most.
His father didn’t force him.
He manipulated him.
There was a difference.
Sarah continued.
“When Emma discovered the truth, she thought you were involved.””
Damon closed his eyes.
The argument.
The anger.
Her disappointment.
Everything made sense now.
“She thought I knew.””
“Yes.””
“But I didn’t.””
“I know.””
Sarah looked at him.
“Emma knew too.””
Damon opened his eyes.
“What?””
“She learned the truth after she left.””
A tear formed in Sarah’s eyes.
“She realized you had been used too.””
Damon whispered:
“Then why didn’t she come back?””
Sarah looked toward the window.
“Because by then, Alexander had already made his move.””
“What move?””
“He threatened Lily.””
Damon’s face changed.
Sarah continued.
“Emma was pregnant when the accident happened.””
Damon looked at Lily.
Then Ava.
His heart broke.
“She was pregnant with twins.””
Nobody spoke.
“After the accident, doctors saved both babies.””
Damon covered his mouth.
Two children.
He had missed everything.
First steps.
First words.
First birthdays.
All because of a lie.
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
Sarah’s voice was gentle.
“Because she believed someone close to you would hurt them.””
Damon looked at Ethan.
Then Victoria.
Then Alexander.
“Who?””
Sarah looked at Alexander.
Nobody moved.
Then she said:
“Not him.””
Damon looked surprised.
Sarah continued.
“Alexander was cruel. Controlling. Dangerous.””
She looked at him.
“But Emma’s biggest fear wasn’t Alexander.””
Damon frowned.
“Then who?””
Sarah reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I was told to give you this only after you found both girls.””
Damon took it.
Emma’s handwriting.
Again.
His heart couldn’t handle seeing it.
He opened the letter.
Damon,
If you are reading this, then you finally know about Ava and Lily.
He looked at the two girls.
Both watching him.
I’m sorry you missed their lives.
His eyes filled.
I’m sorry I made a choice for you.
A tear fell onto the page.
But I had one reason.
The next line was darker.
The person who wanted our family destroyed was not Alexander.
Damon stopped.
Sarah watched him.
Everyone waited.
He continued.
It was someone who knew me.
Someone who knew you.
Someone who knew exactly how to make us doubt each other.
His breathing slowed.
The final sentence was underlined.
Damon, the person who caused the accident has been standing beside you from the beginning.
The room became ice cold.
Damon slowly looked up.
Everyone was silent.
Then his eyes landed on one person.
The person who had been there through every tragedy.
Every meeting.
Every funeral.
Every moment.
Ethan.
Ethan’s face went pale.
“No.””
Damon’s voice was quiet.
“Tell me she’s wrong.””
Ethan didn’t answer.
And that silence was more terrifying than any confession.
Then Damon’s phone buzzed.
A message from Emma.
A message that had been delayed for five years.
Only three words appeared on the screen.
*“Trust no one.””*
May you like
And beneath it:
*“Especially him.””*
