Chapter 6: The Truth Behind Emma’s Disappearance
Damon didn’t move.
He couldn’t.
The world had narrowed down to one thing.
The video.
Emma’s face.
Her voice.
Her words.
She was trying to escape you.
The sentence kept repeating in his mind.
Because it was impossible.
Emma had loved him.
Hadn’t she?
She had held him through the darkest moments of his life. She had laughed with him in their tiny first apartment before the money, before the mansion, before the company.
She had been the one person who never cared about his last name.
So why would she run from him?
“Play it again.””
Damon’s voice was quiet.
Everyone looked at him.
Alexander smiled.
“You heard it.””
“Play it again.””
“Why?””
Damon stepped forward.
“Because I know my wife.””
Alexander studied him.
Then slowly pressed the button.
The video restarted.
Emma appeared on the screen.
She looked different.
Older.
Her face thinner.
Her eyes carried a sadness Damon had never seen before.
But it was still her.
His Emma.
“If Damon found Lily…”
Her voice trembled.
“…then Alexander knows where we are.””
The video ended.
Damon stared at the black screen.
Then he looked at Alexander.
“You edited it.””
Alexander raised an eyebrow.
“Excuse me?””
“You cut something out.””
A faint smile disappeared from Alexander’s face.
Damon pointed at the phone.
“Emma would never say that without explaining why.””
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone in the room knew.
Damon knew Emma better than anyone.
Alexander tilted his head.
“You’re still defending her.””
“Yes.””
“Even after she disappeared?””
Damon’s eyes hardened.
“Especially after she disappeared.””
For a moment, something flashed in Alexander’s eyes.
Anger.
Then it vanished.
“You always were emotional.””
“And you always thought that made me weak.””
Alexander walked farther into the room.
“Your emotions have always been your greatest weakness, Damon.””
“No.””
Damon looked at Lily.
“They’re the reason I’m still standing.””
The little girl held onto his hand.
Alexander noticed.
His expression became colder.
“Give me the child.””
Damon immediately stepped in front of her.
“No.””
“She belongs with her family.””
“She is with her family.””
Alexander looked at Lily.
“She is a Whitmore.””
Damon’s voice dropped.
“She is Emma’s daughter.””
Alexander’s face tightened.
A small reaction.
But enough.
Damon saw it.
“You hate that.””
“What?””
“That she has Emma in her.””
Silence.
Alexander looked away.
And Damon understood.
His father didn’t see Lily as a child.
He saw her as a reminder.
A reminder of the one person who had challenged him.
“Where is Emma?””
Alexander smiled.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
“Emma was never the victim you think she was.””
Damon laughed bitterly.
“You expect me to believe you?””
“I expect you to accept the truth.””
Alexander glanced at Ethan.
“You should have told him years ago.””
Ethan looked ashamed.
Damon turned.
“What does he mean?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
Damon’s anger shifted.
“Ethan.””
His friend finally looked up.
“I knew more than I told you.””
“How much?””
Ethan swallowed.
“Everything.””
The answer hurt.
Damon stepped back.
“Everything?””
“I knew Emma survived the crash.””
The room went silent.
“You knew she was alive.””
“Yes.””
“And you let me bury her?””
“I didn’t have a choice.””
Damon stared at him.
“There is always a choice.””
Ethan’s eyes filled.
“You don’t know what happened that night.””
“Then tell me.””
Ethan looked at Alexander.
Alexander didn’t stop him.
Almost like he wanted the story told.
Ethan took a breath.
“The accident happened because Emma discovered the accounts.””
Damon nodded.
“I know.””
“No.””
Ethan shook his head.
“You know what she found.””
He looked at Damon.
“You don’t know what she did with that information.””
Damon frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
“Emma wasn’t planning to expose Alexander publicly.””
“Why not?””
“Because she discovered something worse.””
The room became still.
Ethan continued.
“She discovered Alexander wasn’t working alone.””
Damon looked at Victoria.
Then Alexander.
“Who?””
Ethan hesitated.
“Someone inside your company.””
Damon’s stomach tightened.
“My company?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Before Ethan could answer, Alexander spoke.
“You’re asking the wrong question.””
Everyone turned.
Alexander calmly removed his gloves.
“The question isn’t who helped me.””
He looked at Damon.
“The question is why Emma was willing to betray you.””
Damon’s expression darkened.
“She didn’t.””
Alexander smiled.
“She found out the truth about you.””
“What truth?””
Alexander walked closer.
“Your company.””
Damon shook his head.
“My company is clean.””
“Is it?””
“Yes.””
Alexander laughed softly.
“You built your empire believing you were different from me.””
Damon said nothing.
“But you weren’t.””
The words hit like a knife.
“You used my money.””
Damon froze.
“What?””
“Your first company.””
Alexander’s voice was calm.
“You thought you built it alone?””
Damon’s memories flashed.
The early years.
The investment.
The sudden opportunity.
The mysterious funding.
He had always believed it was because of his hard work.
Alexander continued.
“I gave you the foundation.””
“You never told me.””
“Because I knew you would refuse.””
Damon looked disgusted.
“So what?””
“So Emma discovered it.””
A cold silence.
Damon’s face changed.
Alexander stepped closer.
“She discovered that the company she loved was built with money connected to my operations.””
“That’s not true.””
“Ask her.””
Damon went quiet.
Because suddenly, he remembered.
The weeks before the accident.
Emma had been distant.
Not afraid.
Disappointed.
She had asked strange questions.
Questions he had ignored.
Where did your first investment really come from, Damon?
He had laughed.
He had told her she was overthinking.
Now those memories hurt.
“She wanted to leave me.””
Alexander’s voice was calm.
Damon looked at him.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“She wanted to protect me.””
“From what?””
Damon didn’t answer.
Alexander smiled.
“From yourself.””
The words cut deep.
Damon hated that part of him wondered.
Just for a second.
What if Emma had discovered something about him?
Something he never knew?
Lily tugged his sleeve.
“Daddy?””
He looked down.
Her eyes were scared.
He immediately pushed the doubt away.
Whatever happened.
Whatever secrets existed.
She was still his daughter.
And Emma was still the woman he loved.
“Where is my wife?””
Alexander sighed.
“You really won’t stop.””
“No.””
“Even after everything?””
“No.””
Alexander looked almost disappointed.
“Then I’ll show you.””
He reached into his coat.
Not for a weapon.
For a small envelope.
He threw it onto the table.
Damon looked at it.
A familiar handwriting.
Emma’s.
His hands trembled.
“What is this?””
“The letter she wrote before she left.””
Damon picked it up.
“Why didn’t I get this?””
Alexander smiled.
“Because she didn’t want you to.””
Damon opened it.
The first line made his heart stop.
Damon,
If you are reading this, then I failed to keep you away from the truth.
He read faster.
I need you to understand something.
The man you love is not the man you think he is.
Damon froze.
Alexander watched him.
Ethan looked away.
Victoria closed her eyes.
Damon continued.
I found proof that the money used to build Whitmore Industries came from Alexander’s hidden accounts.
His fingers shook.
But that is not the reason I left.
He stopped.
The next line was written darker.
Like Emma had pressed the pen into the paper.
I left because I discovered Damon knew.
Damon’s blood ran cold.
No.
Impossible.
The next sentence waited.
He knew where the money came from.
The room disappeared.
Damon stared at the page.
Alexander whispered:
“Now you understand.””
Damon looked up slowly.
His voice barely worked.
“You’re lying.””
But then his phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
He opened it.
One sentence.
May you like
One sentence that destroyed the last piece of certainty he had.
*“Damon, before you trust anyone… ask yourself why you don’t remember the night Emma disappeared.””*
