Chapter 4: The Woman Who Was Never Dead
Damon stared at the message until the letters blurred.
Because Emma just found out you know the truth.
His first thought was impossible.
His second thought was worse.
Emma was alive.
Somewhere.
Right now.
After five years of believing he had lost her forever, the woman he had buried was still breathing.
Still existing.
Still waiting.
“Daddy?””
Lily’s small voice pulled him back.
Damon looked down.
Her eyes were filled with worry.
“What’s wrong?””
He forced himself to breathe.
“Nothing.””
But Lily knew he was lying.
Children always knew.
She touched his hand.
“Mommy said you get quiet when you’re scared.””
Damon looked at her.
A painful smile appeared.
“She knows me that well?””
Lily nodded.
“She said you always pretend you’re okay because you don’t want other people to worry.””
The words hit him harder than he expected.
Because Emma used to say the exact same thing.
Five years ago.
Before everything disappeared.
Damon looked at the envelope on the desk.
Emma’s handwriting was on it.
Waiting.
A message from the woman who had been taken from him.
He carefully opened it.
Inside was a single page.
No long explanation.
No dramatic warning.
Only a few lines.
Damon,
If you are reading this, then Lily found you before they could stop her.
His eyes moved faster.
I know you have questions. I know you are angry. I know you think I abandoned you.
Damon swallowed.
But please believe this: leaving you was the hardest thing I have ever done.
He closed his eyes for a second.
The pain was still there.
Fresh.
Like five years had passed in an instant.
He continued.
The night of the accident, I learned something about people I trusted. Ethan knew about the plan before it happened. Victoria helped create the lie. But there was someone else above them.
Damon froze.
Someone else.
Above them.
His eyes moved down.
Someone who had access to everything. Someone who could erase my identity, my medical records, and make the world believe I was dead.
The room suddenly felt colder.
Damon looked around Emma’s old office.
All those years.
All those questions.
How had nobody noticed?
How had everyone believed it?
I tried to come back to you.
The next sentence was underlined.
Three times.
Damon stopped reading.
Three times.
The first time, I saw Victoria watching your house.
The second time, I received a warning that Lily would disappear if I contacted you.
The third time, I realized someone inside your company was helping them.
His heart sank.
His company.
The place he had built from nothing.
The place where he trusted dozens of people.
The place where someone had been hiding.
Damon read the final lines.
Damon, if Lily reaches you, protect her.
Do not trust anyone who says they were trying to protect you.
That is the lie people tell when they are protecting themselves.
Then the last sentence.
A sentence that made Damon stop breathing.
And Damon… if you still love me, don’t come looking for me.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
“What?””
Lily looked up.
“What did Mommy say?””
Damon didn’t answer.
Because beneath Emma’s signature was another message.
Written smaller.
Almost hidden.
They are watching you right now.
A sound came from behind him.
Damon turned instantly.
The doorway was empty.
But the feeling remained.
Someone had been there.
Someone had been listening.
He grabbed Lily’s hand.
“Come on.””
“Where are we going?””
“Somewhere safe.””
They walked quickly down the hallway.
When they reached the staircase, Victoria was standing below.
Her face changed when she saw the letter in his hand.
“You found it.””
Damon stopped.
“You knew it was here.””
Victoria looked away.
“I knew Emma left something.””
“How?””
She didn’t answer.
Damon descended the stairs.
Every step felt heavier.
“You were in this house after she disappeared.””
Victoria’s silence confirmed it.
“How many times?””
“Damon…”
“How many times?””
She looked exhausted.
“More than once.””
His jaw tightened.
“You searched my wife’s office?””
“I was trying to find answers.””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“You were trying to find evidence.””
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t want any of this to happen.””
“But it did.””
“I was scared.””
Damon stared at her.
“For five years?””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised him.
Just for a moment.
Then anger returned.
“Why?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
“Why were you scared of Emma?””
She looked at Lily.
Then back at Damon.
“Because she knew everything.””
“Everything about what?””
Victoria opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
The old Victoria would have smiled.
The old Victoria would have controlled the room.
But that woman was gone.
Now she looked like someone trapped.
“Damon, you need to understand something.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I’ve spent five years not understanding.””
His voice broke slightly.
“I thought my wife died.””
Victoria looked guilty.
“I know.””
“You watched me mourn her.””
“I know.””
“You stood beside me at her funeral.””
A tear rolled down Victoria’s face.
“I know.””
Damon stared at her.
“How could you?””
Victoria whispered:
“Because I thought she was going to kill you.””
Silence.
Even Damon didn’t expect that answer.
“What?””
Victoria wiped her tears.
“You think I wanted to steal your life? Your ring? Your future?””
She pointed toward the letter.
“Emma was dangerous.””
Damon’s expression hardened.
“Don’t.””
“She wasn’t the woman you remember.””
“Don’t talk about my wife like you knew her.””
Victoria stepped closer.
“I knew her better than you think.””
Damon said nothing.
Victoria lowered her voice.
“Emma discovered something about your company.””
“What?””
“She found financial records.””
Damon frowned.
“What records?””
“Money transfers.””
“From where?””
Victoria hesitated.
“From companies that didn’t exist.””
The answer confused him.
“Explain.””
“I can’t.””
“You can.””
“No.””
Victoria looked terrified again.
“Because if I tell you, they’ll know I talked.””
Damon looked around.
“Who?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
Then the front door suddenly opened.
Everyone froze.
Damon turned.
A man stood in the entrance.
Tall.
Dark coat.
Rainwater dripping from his shoulders.
Ethan Cross.
His face was pale.
He looked older than he had an hour ago.
His eyes went directly to Lily.
Then to Damon.
“You found her.””
Damon stepped forward.
“You knew.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The confession was immediate.
No excuse.
No denial.
Damon felt something inside him break.
“Why?””
Ethan looked at the child.
“Because I was trying to keep her alive.””
Damon’s voice became dangerous.
“You don’t get to say that.””
“I do if it’s true.””
“You let me believe my wife was dead.””
Ethan looked away.
“I know.””
“You stood beside me while I buried an empty coffin.””
Ethan’s face twisted with pain.
“I know.””
Damon walked closer.
“Then tell me where she is.””
Ethan didn’t move.
“I can’t.””
Damon laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.””
“Because everyone is afraid.””
“Of who?””
Ethan looked toward the windows.
The rain hit the glass harder.
Then he said something that made Damon’s blood freeze.
“The person who ordered Emma’s disappearance.””
Damon stared at him.
“Who?””
Ethan looked directly into his eyes.
And for the first time in five years, Damon saw real fear in his best friend’s face.
“Your father.””
The room went silent.
Damon stopped breathing.
“My father died eight years ago.””
Ethan nodded slowly.
“I know.””
“Then explain.””
Ethan reached into his coat pocket.
He pulled out a small black folder.
“I came here because you needed to see this.””
Damon took it.
His hands shook as he opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph.
Not old.
Not damaged.
A photograph taken recently.
A photograph of Emma.
Standing outside a building.
Alive.
Damon’s heart stopped.
But then he noticed something else.
Standing beside Emma was a man.
A man Damon recognized.
A man who should have been impossible.
Because beneath the photograph was a date.
Yesterday.
May you like
And a name.
*Alexander Whitmore.*
