Amused

Chapter 10: The Truth Emma Left Behind

Damon stared at the message.

*Trust no one.*

*Especially him.*

For a moment, nobody breathed.

The old farmhouse was silent except for the sound of rain against the windows.

Every person in the room had a reason to look away.

Everyone except Ethan.

He stood completely still.

Like he had already known this moment would come.

Damon lowered his phone.

“Say something.””

Ethan didn’t move.

“Damon…”

“No.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Not another explanation. Not another excuse.””

Damon looked at him.

“I want the truth.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

And when he opened them again, Damon saw something he had never seen before.

Regret.

“I didn’t cause the accident.””

The words were immediate.

But Damon didn’t relax.

Because a denial was not the same as innocence.

“You knew about it.””

Ethan looked down.

“Yes.””

The answer cut deeper.

Damon shook his head.

“Why?””

Ethan swallowed.

“Because I found out Alexander was planning something.””

“Then why didn’t you stop him?””

“I tried.””

Damon laughed bitterly.

“You tried?””

“Yes.””

“You tried while I buried my wife?””

Ethan’s face tightened.

“I thought Emma was dead.””

The room went quiet.

Damon looked at him.

“What?””

Ethan took a slow breath.

“After the crash, I found Emma.””

Damon froze.

“You found her?””

“Yes.””

“Alive?””

“Yes.””

Every word felt like another piece of his world breaking.

Ethan continued.

“She was injured. She was unconscious. I called for help.””

“Then why didn’t you bring her to me?””

Ethan looked away.

“Because someone else arrived first.””

“Who?””

Ethan’s eyes moved toward Alexander.

“Your father.””

Damon looked at Alexander.

Alexander said nothing.

Ethan continued.

“He told me Emma had discovered something dangerous. He said if Damon knew she survived, everyone connected to her would be targeted.””

Damon’s expression hardened.

“And you believed him?””

“No.””

A pause.

“I believed the threat.””

The answer surprised him.

Ethan looked toward Lily and Ava.

“Because Alexander already had people watching Emma. He already knew about the babies.””

Damon’s chest tightened.

“He knew about my daughters?””

“Yes.””

“And you?””

“I knew.””

The honesty hurt.

“But I didn’t know how to save everyone.””

Damon stepped closer.

“You should have told me.””

“I wanted to.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Ethan looked at him.

“Because Emma asked me not to.””

Damon stopped.

“Emma?””

“Yes.””

The anger inside him faltered.

“Why?””

Ethan’s voice became quiet.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of me?””

“No.””

Ethan shook his head.

“Of what would happen if you came after her.””

Damon frowned.

“I would have protected her.””

“I know.””

Ethan looked at him.

“That’s why she was afraid.””

The words confused him.

“What?””

“Emma knew you.””

A sad smile appeared.

“She knew you would burn everything down to find her.””

Damon said nothing.

“She knew you would confront Alexander. She knew you would fight anyone standing in your way.””

Ethan looked at Lily and Ava.

“And she knew Alexander would use that.””

The room went silent.

Damon finally understood.

Emma wasn’t hiding because she didn’t love him.

She was hiding because she loved him too much.

She knew him.

She knew exactly what he would do.

And she was trying to protect him.

All these years.

She had been protecting him.

Ava stepped closer.

“Daddy?””

Damon looked down.

“Yes?””

“Mommy said you would be angry.””

His throat tightened.

“She said that?””

Ava nodded.

“But she said you would forgive.””

Damon looked at the little girl.

A child who had spent her entire life knowing a father who didn’t know she existed.

“She was right.””

Ava smiled slightly.

“She always is.””

For the first time, Damon smiled.

A real smile.

Then he turned toward Alexander.

“You knew.””

Alexander remained quiet.

“You knew Emma was alive.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about my daughters.””

“Yes.””

“You let me suffer.””

Alexander’s face showed no emotion.

“You were safer believing she was gone.””

Damon stared.

“You still think this was protection?””

“Yes.””

“No.””

Damon shook his head.

“This was control.””

Alexander’s expression hardened.

“You think you’re different from me.””

“I am.””

“You’re not.””

Damon stepped forward.

“My father built an empire by controlling people.””

He looked at Lily and Ava.

“I’m going to build my life by loving them.””

For the first time, Alexander looked defeated.

Not because he lost power.

Because he realized Damon had stopped needing his approval.

A sound came from outside.

A car approaching.

Everyone turned.

Sarah looked nervous.

“That shouldn’t be possible.””

Damon looked at her.

“What?””

She moved toward the window.

“There is only one person who knows this location.””

The car stopped.

The headlights cut through the rain.

Damon’s heart raced.

The front door opened.

Nobody moved.

Then a familiar voice came from the entrance.

“Damon?””

His entire body froze.

He knew that voice.

Even after five years.

Even after believing it was gone forever.

Emma.

She stepped inside.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Damon couldn’t breathe.

Neither could she.

For several seconds, they only stared at each other.

Five years disappeared.

Five years of pain.

Five years of questions.

Five years of missing each other.

Then Emma whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

Damon’s eyes filled.

He wanted to run to her.

He wanted to hold her.

He wanted to ask a thousand questions.

Instead, he stood there.

Because the pain was still real.

“Why?””

Emma looked down.

“Because I hurt you.””

“You disappeared.””

“I know.””

“You let me think you were dead.””

“I know.””

“Why didn’t you trust me?””

The question broke her.

Emma looked at Lily and Ava.

Then back at him.

“I did trust you.””

A tear rolled down her face.

“I didn’t trust what they would do to you.””

Damon walked closer.

“Who?””

Emma looked at Ethan.

Then Alexander.

Then Victoria.

Finally, she looked back at him.

“The person who caused everything.””

Damon’s expression changed.

“Who?””

Emma took a breath.

Then said:

“It wasn’t Ethan.””

Everyone froze.

Ethan looked surprised.

“It wasn’t Alexander.””

Alexander’s expression changed.

“It wasn’t Victoria.””

Victoria looked down.

Damon stared.

“Then who?””

Emma walked closer.

“I found out the truth after I disappeared.””

She reached into her coat.

She pulled out a small folder.

“I discovered someone had been moving money through your company.””

Damon nodded.

“My father.””

“No.””

Emma shook her head.

“Someone using your father.””

She opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

A name.

Damon looked down.

And felt the ground disappear.

Because the signature at the bottom belonged to someone he knew.

Someone who had access to everything.

Someone who had been trusted by the entire Whitmore family.

Someone nobody suspected.

Emma whispered:

“He didn’t want me dead.””

Damon looked up.

“He wanted me silent.””

The room held its breath.

“Who?””

Emma looked directly at the person standing near the door.

The person who had arrived moments earlier.

The person nobody questioned.

The person who had always been around.

The person Damon had believed was harmless.

Emma said:

“The person who started this was…”

The lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone turned.

The door behind them slowly closed.

Emma finished:

“…your mother’s lawyer.””

Damon frowned.

“My mother’s lawyer?””

Emma nodded.

“The man who handled your family’s money for thirty years.””

Damon looked confused.

“Why?””

Emma’s expression became painful.

“Because he wasn’t protecting your family.””

A pause.

“He was replacing it.””

The truth finally surfaced.

Not a dead father.

Not a jealous fiancée.

Not a betrayed friend.

A hidden enemy who had lived inside their world for decades.

Damon looked at his daughters.

At Emma.

At the family he almost lost forever.

And he understood something.

The Whitmore name had been built on secrets.

But his future would not be.

Months later, the world learned the truth.

The illegal accounts were exposed.

The hidden operations collapsed.

The people responsible faced the consequences of their actions.

But Damon never cared about the headlines.

He cared about mornings.

Simple mornings.

The kind he once thought he would never have.

Ava and Lily running through the garden.

Emma laughing in the kitchen.

A home filled with voices instead of silence.

One evening, Damon found Emma sitting outside, watching their daughters play.

He sat beside her.

“Do you ever regret coming back?””

Emma looked at him.

“No.””

“Even after everything?””

She smiled.

“Especially after everything.””

Damon took her hand.

The same hand that once wore a ring he thought was buried forever.

“I thought I lost you.””

Emma squeezed his fingers.

“I know.””

“But you were always fighting to come home.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

A small smile appeared.

“I just needed you to find the truth first.””

Damon looked at their daughters.

Then at the woman he had lost and found again.

Five years ago, he thought his story ended at a funeral.

He was wrong.

Sometimes the greatest secrets are not the ones that destroy a family.

Sometimes they are the ones that lead a family back home.
