Chapter 8: The Secret Emma Carried Alone

Damon stared at the photograph.

His mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.

Emma.

Holding Lily.

The image was clear.

Real.

Not a memory.

Not a dream.

Not a lie.

Emma was alive when that photograph was taken.

And Lily was there.

But Alexander’s words kept echoing.

The child you just found is not the only secret your wife kept from you.

Damon slowly looked at Lily.

The little girl who had called him Daddy.

The little girl who carried Emma’s letters.

The little girl who had walked into his life and shattered everything he believed.

“What are you saying?””

His voice was barely controlled.

Alexander leaned against the table.

“I’m saying you don’t know the whole story.””

Damon’s eyes hardened.

“You’ve spent years lying to me. Why should I believe anything you say?””

“Because unlike the others, I have nothing left to gain.””

Damon almost laughed.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

Alexander looked at the photograph.

“I expect you to ask Emma yourself.””

The room went quiet.

Damon stepped forward.

“Where is she?””

Alexander smiled slightly.

“You’re still asking the wrong person.””

“Then who do I ask?””

Alexander looked at Lily.

The child immediately moved closer to Damon.

A protective instinct took over.

Damon stepped in front of her.

“Don’t look at her.””

Alexander’s expression changed.

For the first time, Damon saw something almost like disappointment.

“You really are like your mother.””

Damon froze.

“My mother?””

“She protected everyone.””

Alexander looked away.

“Even the people who betrayed her.””

Damon didn’t respond.

Because he didn’t trust himself to.

Too many truths had fallen apart tonight.

He looked at Ethan.

“You knew about Lily.””

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Since she was born.””

The answer hit him.

Damon’s face tightened.

“Since she was born?””

“Yes.””

“You knew I had a daughter.””

Ethan looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

“And you let me live five years without knowing?””

“I thought I was protecting her.””

Damon stepped toward him.

“You keep using that word.””

His voice was cold.

“Protecting.””

He pointed around the room.

“Everyone says they were protecting me.””

Then he pointed at Lily.

“But nobody protected her from losing her father.””

Ethan looked down.

Damon’s anger was justified.

He knew it.

“I’m sorry.””

Damon shook his head.

“No.””

A pause.

“Sorry doesn’t give me five years back.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“I know.””

Damon turned toward Victoria.

“And you?””

Victoria looked at him.

“I knew about Lily.””

The confession came quietly.

Damon went still.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Victoria swallowed.

“Alexander showed me a photograph years ago.””

“Why?””

“To prove Emma was alive.””

Damon stared.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Victoria looked broken.

“Because he threatened me.””

Damon’s expression didn’t change.

“He threatened everyone.””

“I know.””

“Everyone had a choice.””

Victoria looked at him.

“And you think I made the right one?””

The question surprised him.

Because she wasn’t defending herself.

She was admitting it.

“I was scared.””

Damon’s voice softened slightly.

“Scared people still make choices.””

Victoria looked down.

“I know.””

A heavy silence followed.

Then Lily spoke.

“Daddy?””

Damon turned.

“Yes?””

“Can we go see Mommy now?””

The question destroyed him.

Because he didn’t have an answer.

He didn’t know where Emma was.

He didn’t know if she was safe.

He didn’t know if she wanted to see him.

But he knew one thing.

He had already lost five years.

He wasn’t losing another day.

“We’re going to find her.””

Lily smiled.

“Okay.””

Alexander watched them.

“You really think she’ll come back to you?””

Damon looked at him.

“Yes.””

“After everything?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Damon looked at Lily.

“Because Emma never stopped loving me.””

Alexander’s expression became unreadable.

Then he said something that made Damon freeze.

“She stopped trusting you.””

The words hurt because they were true.

But Damon refused to let them control him.

“Where is she?””

Alexander walked toward the door.

“You want answers?””

“Yes.””

“Then come with me.””

Damon didn’t move.

“I don’t trust you.””

“You shouldn’t.””

The honesty surprised him.

Alexander opened the door.

“But you should trust the truth.””

Rain poured outside.

A black car waited near the entrance.

Damon looked at Ethan.

“What is this?””

Ethan stared at Alexander.

“He wants to take us to her.””

Damon narrowed his eyes.

“You believe him?””

“No.””

Ethan looked at Lily.

“But I believe we’re out of time.””

That sentence made Damon’s stomach tighten.

“What does that mean?””

Before Ethan answered, Victoria spoke.

“He’s right.””

Everyone looked at her.

Victoria wiped her face.

“If Alexander brought himself here tonight…”

She looked toward the dark driveway.

“…it means someone else is already moving.””

Damon frowned.

“Someone else?””

Victoria nodded.

“The person who has been controlling all of this.””

Damon looked at Alexander.

“You said you were the one behind it.””

Alexander smiled.

“I said I knew about it.””

A chill moved through Damon.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan whispered:

“Alexander wasn’t the person Emma was afraid of.””

Damon stared.

“Then who was?””

Ethan looked toward the road.

“The person who made Alexander afraid.””

The rain grew heavier.

Damon felt something shift.

The entire night had been about finding the person who destroyed his family.

But maybe he had been searching in the wrong direction.

They drove for almost an hour.

Nobody spoke.

Lily sat beside Damon in the back seat, holding his hand.

Every few minutes, she looked at him.

As if making sure he was still there.

Finally, Damon whispered:

“Lily?””

“Yes?””

“Did Mommy ever tell you about me?””

The little girl smiled.

“All the time.””

“What did she say?””

Lily looked out the window.

“She said Daddy was funny.””

Damon smiled sadly.

“She said that?””

“Yes.””

“What else?””

“She said you sing when you think nobody is listening.””

For the first time all night, Damon laughed.

A real laugh.

Small.

Broken.

But real.

“She told you that?””

Lily nodded.

“She said you were terrible.””

Damon looked shocked.

“Excuse me?””

“She said you sound like a dying animal.””

A quiet laugh escaped Ethan from the front seat.

Damon almost smiled.

Because that was Emma.

Even in pain.

Even afraid.

She still found ways to make their daughter laugh.

Then the car stopped.

Damon looked outside.

An old farmhouse stood beyond the trees.

No lights.

No movement.

Alexander stepped out.

Damon followed.

“Where are we?””

Alexander looked at the building.

“This is where Emma stayed.””

Damon’s heart raced.

“She’s here?””

Alexander didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Damon ran toward the door.

Inside, the house was simple.

Nothing like the Whitmore mansion.

No luxury.

No expensive furniture.

Just a quiet home.

A home Emma built away from everything.

On the table was a photograph.

Damon picked it up.

Emma.

Lily.

And him.

A picture he had never seen.

But he was in it.

Taken before everything happened.

Before the accident.

Before the lies.

Behind the frame was a note.

His hands trembled as he opened it.

Damon,

If you found this, then Lily finally brought you here.

He stopped.

Lily had brought him here.

Not Alexander.

Not Ethan.

Emma had planned this.

He continued.

I need you to know the truth before you see me.

There is something I never told you.

Damon’s heart pounded.

The next line was short.

But it changed everything.

Lily is not the only child I had that night.

Damon stopped breathing.

The paper shook in his hand.

“What?””

Ethan stepped closer.

“Damon…”

He couldn’t hear him.

The next sentence stared back at him.

When I disappeared, I was protecting both of our children.

The room spun.

Both.

Children.

Damon slowly looked up.

“Both?””

Then a sound came from upstairs.

A floorboard creaked.

Everyone froze.

A small voice came from the darkness above.

“Mommy?””

Lily looked toward the stairs.

Then whispered:

“Someone else is here.””

Damon took one step forward.

His heart pounding.

A child slowly appeared at the top of the staircase.

A child who looked exactly like Emma.

And the little girl stared down at him.

May you like

Then said:

“Are you really my daddy?””
