Chapter 9: The Truth We Buried
I moved before I even thought.
I grabbed Lily.
Mason grabbed Rachel's phone.
The sound of footsteps came from the hallway.
Slow.
Confident.
Someone who wasn't afraid.
Someone who knew exactly where they were going.
"Mason," I whispered.
"Take Lily upstairs.""
"Dad—"
"Now.""
He didn't argue.
That was how much he had changed.
He wasn't the scared boy who hid behind silence anymore.
He was protecting his sister.
I grabbed the closest thing I could find.
A heavy flashlight.
The hallway was dark.
Then a figure appeared.
Not Daniel.
A stranger.
He looked surprised to see me.
Then he smiled.
"Michael Carter.""
I raised the flashlight.
"Who are you?""
The man laughed.
"Someone who knows your family better than you do.""
Police arrived minutes later.
The man escaped.
But he left something behind.
A phone.
Inside were messages.
From Daniel.
From Vanessa.
And one name that made everything clear.
My father.
The next morning, Vanessa came to my sister's house under police supervision.
She looked exhausted.
Older.
Like the last few weeks had finally broken through the mask.
"I need to tell you everything.""
I didn't invite her inside.
"You have five minutes.""
She nodded.
"Daniel is your half-brother.""
"I know.""
She looked shocked.
"You found out.""
"Keep going.""
She looked down.
"Your father had another family.""
I stayed silent.
"Daniel was his son from before he met your mother.""
"And?""
"Your father rejected him.""
"Why?""
"Because Daniel's mother was involved in fraud.""
I frowned.
"That doesn't explain everything.""
"No.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"But Daniel believed your father stole his life.""
The pieces connected.
The revenge.
The obsession.
The years of planning.
"He blamed me.""
She nodded.
"He wanted to take everything from you.""
"And you were his way in.""
Her eyes filled.
"Yes.""
I looked away.
The truth hurt.
But there was something else.
"You still hurt Lily.""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"I know.""
"Why?""
A long silence.
Then:
"Because Daniel kept pressuring me.""
I stared.
"That's your excuse?""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"It's not.""
She looked at the ground.
"I was angry because I felt trapped.""
"And you chose a child.""
"I know.""
For the first time, Vanessa didn't defend herself.
She accepted what she had done.
"I can't undo it.""
"No.""
I looked at her.
"You can't.""
She nodded.
"But I can help you stop him.""
I wanted to hate her.
It would have been easier.
But life wasn't that simple.
People could be victims and still cause harm.
They could be afraid and still make cruel choices.
"What do you know?""
She reached into her bag.
And handed me a folder.
"Everything.""
Inside were Daniel's plans.
Names.
Payments.
Dates.
And one final document.
A contract.
Signed by Daniel.
The title made my stomach drop.
"Guardianship Transfer Agreement.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"What is this?""
Her face went pale.
"Daniel planned to make me the legal guardian of Lily.""
I couldn't breathe.
"When?""
"After removing you.""
The room went silent.
Then my phone rang.
The police.
I answered.
"Hello?""
The officer's voice was urgent.
"Mr. Carter, we found Daniel.""
I felt a wave of relief.
"Where?""
A pause.
Then:
"At the courthouse.""
My blood ran cold.
"Why?""
"He filed an emergency motion.""
"What kind of motion?""
The officer hesitated.
May you like
Then said:
"To claim temporary custody of Lily.""
