Amused

Chapter 8: Protecting Lily

I didn't wait for permission.

I didn't wait for explanations.

I packed bags.

Mine.

Lily's.

Mason's.

We left before sunrise.

The first thing I learned after discovering the truth about Vanessa was this:

Danger doesn't always announce itself.

Sometimes it smiles at your wedding.

Sometimes it kisses your child goodnight.

Sometimes it sits across the dinner table pretending to be family.

We stayed at my sister Rachel's house.

She didn't ask questions when she saw my face.

She just opened the door.

"Bring the kids inside.""

That was all.

For the first time in days, I felt like I could breathe.

But only for a moment.

Because Daniel was still out there.

And he knew where Lily was.

The police took the threats seriously.

The custody situation changed immediately.

But evidence was complicated.

Daniel was careful.

He didn't send direct threats with his name.

He hid behind numbers.

Fake accounts.

Other people.

Then Rachel found something.

A letter.

It had been delivered to her house.

No stamp.

No return address.

Just my name.

I opened it.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

"You don't know the truth about your father.""

I frowned.

Another photograph fell out.

My father.

Standing beside Daniel.

Years before I met him.

I stared.

"Impossible.""

Rachel looked over my shoulder.

"Who is that?""

"Daniel.""

She looked at me.

"Your father knew him?""

Apparently, everyone knew something except me.

I spent the next day digging through my father's old belongings.

And I found the locked cabinet.

The one I had forgotten about.

Inside were documents.

Property records.

Letters.

And one envelope with my name.

My hands shook as I opened it.

My father's handwriting filled the page.

Michael,

If you are reading this, then someone has finally found what I was protecting.

I stopped.

Then continued.

Daniel Brooks is not who he claims to be.

He has been searching for the land for years.

But the land is not the important part.

The trust is.

I swallowed.

My father knew.

He knew everything.

The letter continued.

Your daughter must never fall into his hands.

Because Lily is the only person who can expose him.

I looked up.

"Lily.""

Mason stood behind me.

"Dad?""

I turned.

"He knew.""

"Who?""

"Your grandfather.""

Mason read the letter.

Then whispered:

"Why would Lily expose him?""

Before I could answer, another document fell from the envelope.

A birth certificate.

Not Lily's.

Someone else's.

I read the name.

And froze.

Daniel Brooks wasn't Daniel Brooks.

His real name was David Carter.

My father's missing son.

My half-brother.

I couldn't breathe.

The man who destroyed my company.

The man who manipulated my wife.

The man hunting my daughter.

Was my own family.

That night, Vanessa called.

I almost didn't answer.

But I did.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Her voice was quiet.

"Because I was afraid.""

"Afraid of what?""

"Of Daniel.""

"His name isn't Daniel, is it?""

Silence.

Then:

"You found out.""

"He's your accomplice.""

"No.""

The desperation in her voice surprised me.

"No, Michael.""

"Then explain.""

She took a breath.

"Daniel used me.""

"You helped him.""

"I know.""

Her voice broke.

"But I was trying to stop him.""

I didn't believe her.

Not completely.

But then she said something I couldn't ignore.

"He isn't coming for the money anymore.""

"Then what?""

"He wants Lily because she can inherit everything.""

I looked toward my daughter sleeping.

"How?""

Vanessa whispered:

"Because your father changed the trust rules.""

"What rules?""

"He wrote that if anything happened to you, Lily would inherit.""

I went silent.

"What are you saying?""

A pause.

Then:

"Michael...""

Her voice shook.

"He doesn't need to take Lily.""

"He just needs you gone.""

The call ended.

And seconds later, the lights went out.

Every light in the house.

Rachel screamed.

May you like

Then I heard the back door open.

Someone was inside.
