Chapter 6: The Photograph That Changed Everything
I stared at the picture on my phone until the screen went dark.
Then I turned it back on.
Because my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
The photograph showed Vanessa standing outside a restaurant.
She wasn't alone.
Standing beside her was a man I recognized immediately.
My former business partner.
Daniel Brooks.
The man who had betrayed me five years earlier.
The man who had nearly destroyed my company.
The man who disappeared after taking hundreds of thousands of dollars from our account.
My hands went cold.
Because Daniel wasn't just standing beside Vanessa.
He was holding her hand.
The message beneath the photo appeared again.
"Ask your wife why she came into your life.""
I looked across the room.
Lily was asleep on the couch, her head resting against a pillow.
Mason was at the table doing homework.
For a moment, I wanted to ignore it.
I wanted to pretend the worst was over.
But I had learned something important.
Secrets don't disappear because you stop looking for them.
They grow.
"Mason," I said quietly.
He looked up.
"What's wrong?""
I turned the phone toward him.
The second he saw the picture, his face changed.
"You know him?""
I nodded slowly.
"His name is Daniel.""
Mason frowned.
"Mom knows him.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
Mason looked nervous.
"I've seen his name before.""
"Where?""
"In her messages.""
I sat down.
"What messages?""
He hesitated.
"On her tablet.""
I stared at him.
"Mason, when?""
"Before everything happened.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
His eyes dropped.
"Because I thought it was another thing Mom would punish me for.""
I closed my eyes.
Another secret.
Another thing hidden under my roof.
"Show me.""
Mason looked toward Lily.
Then whispered:
"I deleted some of them.""
"Why?""
"Because they scared me.""
That answer made my chest tighten.
"What did they say?""
Mason swallowed.
"Mom kept saying she was almost done.""
"Done with what?""
"I don't know.""
I stood up.
I needed answers.
Not tomorrow.
Not later.
Now.
That night, after the children were asleep, I went through every document Vanessa had left behind during the custody battle.
At first, everything looked normal.
Bank statements.
Legal papers.
Medical records.
Then I noticed something.
A payment.
Small.
Almost hidden.
$2,000 transferred to Vanessa's account every month before we married.
The sender?
A company I didn't recognize.
But the name attached to the account made my stomach twist.
Brooks Holdings.
Daniel's company.
I sat there in silence.
Vanessa didn't meet me by accident.
She wasn't just the woman who came into my life after my divorce.
She had been connected to Daniel.
Before she ever met me.
The next morning, I called an old friend who still worked in finance.
"Chris, I need a favor.""
"What kind?""
"Information.""
An hour later, my phone rang.
His voice sounded serious.
"Michael, where did you get this name?""
"Why?""
"Because Brooks Holdings wasn't just a company.""
"What does that mean?""
"It was a shell company.""
I stood.
"Used for what?""
A pause.
Then:
"Moving money.""
My stomach dropped.
"Are you saying Vanessa was involved?""
"I don't know. But I found something.""
"What?""
"Five years ago, right after Daniel disappeared, money from that company went to a woman named Vanessa Reed.""
I stared at the wall.
Vanessa.
Before she became my wife.
Before she became Lily's stepmother.
Before I trusted her.
She had been connected to the man who tried to destroy me.
That evening, I confronted her.
She was sitting in the kitchen when I walked in.
She looked exhausted.
But not guilty.
"Who is Daniel Brooks?""
The color drained from her face.
For a second.
Only a second.
Then she recovered.
"I don't know anyone by that name.""
I placed my phone on the table.
The photograph appeared.
Her expression collapsed.
"Where did you get that?""
"Answer me.""
She stood.
"You have no idea what you're doing.""
"You're right.""
I stepped closer.
"I have no idea how long you've been lying.""
Her eyes filled with anger.
"After everything I've been through, you think I owe you answers?""
I laughed.
"After everything you've done, you think this is about you?""
She looked away.
"Michael...""
"No.""
My voice shook.
"You hurt my daughter. You manipulated my stepson. And now I find out you knew Daniel.""
She became silent.
That silence told me everything.
"You did know him.""
Vanessa sat down slowly.
"I didn't plan for things to happen this way.""
My heart sank.
"What does that mean?""
She looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw fear.
Real fear.
"Daniel told me you had money.""
I couldn't breathe.
"What?""
She closed her eyes.
"He told me you were lonely. That you needed someone.""
The room felt like it was spinning.
"Did he send you?""
She didn't answer.
I didn't need one.
Because silence was an answer.
Then Vanessa whispered:
"I was supposed to get close to you.""
I stared at her.
"Why?""
Her voice cracked.
"Because Daniel wanted access to your company.""
Everything inside me went numb.
My marriage.
My family.
My entire life.
Was built on a lie.
But then Vanessa said something I never expected.
"Michael, I need you to understand something.""
I looked at her.
"What?""
She wiped her tears.
"I stopped following Daniel's plan years ago.""
I almost laughed.
"After you married me?""
"No.""
She looked toward the hallway.
Toward Lily's room.
"Before Lily was born.""
I froze.
"What are you saying?""
Vanessa looked terrified.
"Daniel didn't just want your money.""
"Then what did he want?""
May you like
Her voice dropped.
"He wanted your daughter.""
