Amused

Chapter 10: The Daughter He Couldn't Take

The courthouse was crowded.

But all I saw was Lily.

My daughter.

Sitting beside me.

Holding my hand.

Waiting.

Daniel stood across the room.

And for the first time, I saw him clearly.

Not as my former partner.

Not as my brother.

As a man who had spent years destroying lives because he believed he deserved something.

He looked at me.

And smiled.

"Michael.""

I stared at him.

"You should have stayed gone.""

He laughed.

"You still don't understand.""

"No.""

I stepped closer.

"I understand everything.""

The hearing began.

Daniel's lawyer argued that he had a legitimate claim.

That he was family.

That he had rights.

But then the evidence came out.

The threats.

The surveillance.

The financial records.

The plan.

And finally...

The recordings.

Mason sat outside the courtroom.

He didn't need to speak.

His evidence spoke for him.

The judge listened.

Then looked at Daniel.

"Mr. Brooks, do you have anything to say?""

Daniel stood.

"I was robbed.""

The room went quiet.

"I was abandoned.""

He looked at me.

"My father chose him.""

Nobody moved.

"He got everything.""

The judge frowned.

"That does not justify your actions.""

Daniel laughed softly.

"You don't understand.""

Then he looked at Lily.

"I was supposed to have that.""

I immediately stepped in front of her.

The judge's expression changed.

Because everyone heard it.

Not money.

Not property.

Her.

The case continued for hours.

By the end, Daniel had no custody rights.

No access.

No claim.

The investigation against him expanded.

Vanessa's role was complicated.

She was charged for her actions against Lily, but her cooperation helped uncover Daniel's crimes.

She accepted responsibility.

No excuses.

No blaming.

Just consequences.

Months later, our lives were different.

Not perfect.

But honest.

Lily stopped asking if she was allowed to eat.

She stopped hiding snacks.

She stopped apologizing for needing things.

One evening, I found her sitting beside Mason.

They were drawing pictures.

"What are you making?""

Lily held up her paper.

"It's our family.""

I smiled.

The drawing showed three people.

Me.

Her.

Mason.

Then she added something.

A small heart.

"Who's that?""

She smiled.

"Me.""

I looked at the picture.

And realized something.

Family wasn't always the people who shared your blood.

Sometimes it was the people who stayed when things became difficult.

Mason became my son in every way that mattered.

And Lily finally became the child she had always deserved to be.

A few months later, I received one final letter.

From Daniel.

I almost threw it away.

But I opened it.

Inside was a single sentence.

"I spent my whole life trying to take what you had.""

I read the next line.

"And I never realized you already had the thing I wanted most.""

I looked around the house.

At Lily laughing.

At Mason helping her with homework.

At the dinner table full of food.

No locked pantry.

No fear.

No secrets.

I folded the letter.

Because Daniel was right about one thing.

He spent his entire life chasing something.

Something he thought was money.

Power.

Inheritance.

But it wasn't.

It was love.

And the one thing he could never steal...

was the family he never knew how to build.
