Amused

Chapter 7: The Man Behind The Plan

I didn't sleep.

Again.

But this time, it wasn't because I was angry.

It was because my entire understanding of the past five years had fallen apart.

Daniel wanted my daughter.

Those words repeated in my head.

Over and over.

I sat at the kitchen table until sunrise.

When Mason came downstairs, he stopped when he saw my face.

"Dad?""

I looked at him.

"Did you know Daniel wanted Lily?""

His expression changed.

Not surprise.

Fear.

"You found out.""

My chair scraped against the floor.

"What do you mean?""

Mason looked down.

"I heard Mom and Daniel talking.""

"When?""

"Last year.""

My heart sank.

"What did they say?""

He sat down slowly.

"They said Lily was the reason they couldn't finish.""

"Finish what?""

"I don't know.""

I grabbed my phone.

"We need to find out.""

Later that day, Vanessa agreed to meet me.

Not at home.

Not somewhere private.

A public place.

A coffee shop.

She sat across from me with tired eyes.

"I know you hate me.""

I looked at her.

"I don't know what I feel.""

That was the truth.

Hate was simple.

What I felt was worse.

Confusion.

Betrayal.

Disgust.

And a small part of me still remembering the woman I thought she was.

"Tell me everything.""

Vanessa looked down.

"I met Daniel when I was struggling.""

"When?""

"Before you.""

She took a breath.

"He offered me money.""

"To marry me?""

"To get information.""

I clenched my jaw.

"What information?""

"Your company. Your accounts. Your investments.""

"And you agreed?""

She nodded.

"I was desperate.""

I stared at her.

"That doesn't excuse anything.""

"I know.""

For once, she didn't argue.

"I was supposed to leave after I got what he wanted.""

"But you didn't.""

She shook her head.

"Because I fell in love with you.""

I looked away.

"Don't say that.""

"It's true.""

"Then why did you hurt Lily?""

Her face changed.

Pain.

Shame.

"I don't know.""

The answer made me angry.

"You don't know?""

"I was angry.""

"At a five-year-old?""

"No.""

She covered her face.

"At myself.""

I didn't know what to say.

Because there was no excuse.

Only damage.

"What does Daniel want now?""

Vanessa looked around.

Then lowered her voice.

"He knows about the custody battle.""

"How?""

"He has people watching.""

My blood ran cold.

"Why?""

"Because he thinks Lily is the key.""

"To what?""

Vanessa hesitated.

Then:

"Your inheritance.""

I frowned.

"What inheritance?""

She looked shocked.

"You don't know?""

"No.""

Vanessa stared at me.

"Michael, your father left something behind.""

"My father died with debt.""

"That's what Daniel wanted you to believe.""

I felt like the floor disappeared.

"What are you talking about?""

She leaned forward.

"Your father owned land.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"He hid it.""

"Why?""

"Because someone was trying to take it from him.""

I thought back.

My father's last years.

His paranoia.

The arguments.

The locked filing cabinet he never let anyone touch.

I always thought he was losing his mind.

But maybe he had been protecting something.

"Where is it?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"I don't know.""

"But Daniel does?""

She nodded.

"And he thinks Lily's existence gives him access.""

I stared at her.

"Why?""

"Because your father changed his will before he died.""

"What does Lily have to do with it?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with fear.

"He created a trust.""

"For who?""

She whispered:

"For his first grandchild.""

The world went silent.

"Lily?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Daniel believes if he controls Lily, he controls the trust.""

I stood.

"This is insane.""

"No.""

She looked at me.

"It's dangerous.""

That night, I returned home and checked every lock.

Every window.

Every door.

Mason noticed.

"Dad?""

"Something is wrong.""

"Is Daniel coming here?""

I looked at him.

"I don't know.""

A noise came from outside.

A car door closing.

We both froze.

I walked toward the window.

A black SUV was parked across the street.

The lights were off.

Someone was sitting inside.

Watching.

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

"You should have left the past buried.""

Then another message arrived.

A photograph.

It was taken minutes earlier.

It showed me standing at the window.

Someone had been close enough to photograph me inside my own house.

May you like

And beneath the picture were four words:

"I found your daughter.""
