Amused

Chapter 4: The Truth Comes Out

I spent the next forty-eight hours discovering how much of my daughter's life I had missed.

Not because I didn't love her.

Because I believed the wrong person.

That was a truth I would carry forever.

The preschool records showed patterns.

Lily arrived tired.

Sometimes without eating breakfast.

Sometimes wearing the same clothes two days in a row.

I looked at the papers on the table and felt like every page was another accusation.

Not against Vanessa.

Against me.

Mason sat beside me quietly.

"You didn't know.""

I looked at him.

"I should have.""

He shook his head.

"Mom made sure you didn't.""

That was the worst part.

She had planned it.

She had created a version of reality where I thought everything was normal.

That night, Vanessa called.

I almost didn't answer.

But I did.

"Where are you?""

Her voice was shaking.

"Michael, please come home.""

"No.""

"We need to talk.""

"You had years to talk.""

Silence.

Then she whispered:

"I made mistakes.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Mistakes are forgetting someone's birthday. Mistakes are burning dinner.""

"Michael...""

"You hurt my daughter.""

"I never meant—"

"Don't.""

My voice cracked.

"You don't get to hide behind intentions.""

She started crying.

"I love Lily.""

I looked at my daughter sleeping beside me.

"No, Vanessa.""

A long pause.

"You loved controlling Lily.""

The line went quiet.

Then Vanessa said something that made my blood run cold.

"You don't know everything.""

I froze.

"What does that mean?""

"You think Mason told you everything?""

I looked at the hallway.

"What are you saying?""

Her voice changed.

The sadness disappeared.

"I think you should ask him where he got that camera.""

The call ended.

I immediately found Mason.

"What camera?""

His face went pale.

"What?""

"Vanessa said I should ask where you got the camera.""

He looked down.

"I bought it.""

"With what money?""

He hesitated.

Then whispered:

"Mom's wallet.""

I stared at him.

"You stole?""

His eyes filled with tears.

"No.""

"Then tell me.""

"I took money because I wanted to protect Lily.""

I sat down.

"What do you mean?""

He wiped his face.

"I saved money for months.""

"For what?""

"A phone.""

"Why?""

"So I could record things.""

I couldn't speak.

Mason looked at the floor.

"I knew nobody would believe me.""

That sentence hurt more than anything.

Because he was right.

Children are supposed to believe adults.

Not build cases against them.

The next day, I met with a lawyer.

I expected Vanessa to fight.

I expected anger.

I expected denial.

I didn't expect what happened next.

When she arrived, she wasn't alone.

She brought her mother.

Her mother walked into the room and immediately said:

"My daughter is not a bad person.""

I looked at her.

"Your daughter hit my child.""

"She lost control.""

"She locked my child away.""

"She was stressed.""

I leaned forward.

"Stress does not explain cruelty.""

Vanessa looked at me.

"You are destroying our family.""

I stared at her.

"No.""

I looked at Lily.

"I am saving what is left of it.""

Then Vanessa reached into her purse.

She placed a folder on the table.

"I have proof too.""

My lawyer opened it.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Statements.

My heart sank.

"What is this?""

Vanessa smiled slightly.

And for the first time, I saw exactly who she was.

Not a scared woman.

Not a guilty woman.

Someone who had been waiting for this moment.

"I knew you would turn against me.""

She pushed the papers forward.

"So I prepared.""

My lawyer read the first page.

Then looked at me.

"Michael...""

"What?""

His expression changed.

"This is a custody complaint.""

I stared at Vanessa.

"You filed against me?""

She smiled.

"For full custody.""

I couldn't believe it.

"Of Lily?""

Vanessa nodded.

Then she said:

"Because according to these documents, you're an unstable father who allowed his daughter to be neglected.""

My blood went cold.

May you like

Because I realized Vanessa wasn't just trying to save herself.

She was trying to take Lily away from me.
