Amused

Chapter 9: The Father Behind The Lie

I read the message three times.

Then a fourth.

My eyes kept moving over the same words.

*YOUR FATHER IS STILL ALIVE, MAYA.*

For fifteen years, I had carried a memory of my father.

Not a person.

A memory.

His voice.

His laugh.

The way he used to tap his fingers against the table when he was thinking.

The way he always called me "my little hurricane" because I never walked into a room quietly.

I had spent half my life grieving a dead man.

And now someone was telling me he was alive.

I looked at the photograph again.

My mother stood beside a man.

An older man.

Tired.

Different.

But I knew him.

Even after all these years.

I knew him.

"Dad...""

The word escaped before I could stop it.

Everyone turned.

Daniel immediately came closer.

"What did you receive?""

I handed him the phone.

His expression changed the moment he saw the image.

"No.""

I looked at him.

"You know something.""

He didn't answer.

"Daniel.""

He looked away.

That was enough.

"Tell me.""

His voice became quiet.

"I thought he was dead.""

Not the answer I wanted.

Not the answer I needed.

"You thought?""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Maya, after the night you disappeared, your father vanished too.""

"So everyone assumed he died.""

"Yes.""

"But you never found a body.""

Silence.

My heart started beating faster.

Nobody had found a body.

Nobody had proof.

They had only believed.

Because it was easier.

Fifteen years of my life built on assumptions.

I looked at Richard.

He was staring at the photograph.

His face was impossible to read.

"What?""

He looked at me.

"I have seen him.""

The room went silent.

"What did you say?""

Richard swallowed.

"Victor showed me a photo years ago.""

My chest tightened.

"Of my father?""

He nodded.

"When?""

"After we married.""

My anger returned instantly.

"Of course.""

Richard flinched.

"Maya.""

"No.""

I stepped back.

"You keep finding new ways to hurt me.""

"I was going to tell you.""

"When?""

His silence answered.

I laughed.

A painful sound.

"Exactly.""

Richard looked away.

"I didn't know what was real.""

"You knew enough.""

He accepted that.

Because there was nothing else to say.

Daniel turned to him.

"What did Victor tell you?""

Richard looked at the floor.

"He said Alexander Laurent wasn't hiding.""

"Then where was he?""

Richard hesitated.

"Working with someone.""

My stomach dropped.

"Who?""

Richard looked at me.

"Your mother.""

Nobody spoke.

My mother.

My father.

Together.

Alive.

Hidden.

Everything I believed was wrong.

I felt dizzy.

"Why?""

No one answered.

Then Olivia quietly said:

"Because they were trying to protect you.""

I looked at her.

"From what?""

Her face changed.

From fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

"From Victor.""

Daniel nodded.

"The night your family disappeared wasn't an attack.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"It was an escape.""

I stared at him.

"Explain.""

Daniel walked toward the table.

He placed an old file down.

One I had never seen before.

"This was found yesterday.""

"Yesterday?""

He nodded.

"Because someone wanted us to find it.""

I opened the file.

Inside were documents.

Bank transfers.

Company records.

And a letter.

My father's handwriting.

Again.

My hands trembled.

*Daniel, if Maya returns, give her this.*

I read the first line.

*The greatest mistake I ever made was trusting Victor Hale.*

I stopped.

Daniel watched me carefully.

The letter continued.

*Victor was never trying to destroy Laurent Global for money. He wanted something more valuable.*

My eyes moved down.

*He wanted my daughter.*

I felt cold.

Not my company.

Not my wealth.

Me.

The letter explained everything.

Victor had discovered something years ago.

A legal agreement my father had created.

A protection clause.

If I was alive, and if I reached adulthood, I would inherit control of the Laurent Foundation and a significant voting share in Laurent Global.

My existence was not just emotional.

It was powerful.

I wasn't just the missing daughter.

I was the person who could stop Victor.

I looked up.

"That's why.""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

"That's why he searched for me.""

"Yes.""

"And Richard?""

Nobody answered.

I looked at him.

Richard looked broken.

"My grandfather told me I was helping him find answers.""

I stared.

"You were helping him find me.""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

"But you didn't know why.""

"No.""

"Until later.""

"Yes.""

I turned away.

It hurt.

Even knowing the truth didn't erase what happened.

Then I noticed something.

A detail in the letter.

A name.

I froze.

"What is this?""

Daniel looked.

"What?""

I pointed.

"Here.""

The letter said:

*If Victor ever reaches Maya, tell her that the person she trusts most may be the person she fears most.*

I looked at everyone.

"What does that mean?""

Nobody spoke.

Then Richard whispered:

"I think it means me.""

The room went quiet.

"No.""

He looked at me.

"I was supposed to bring you to Victor.""

"But you didn't.""

"Not intentionally.""

I shook my head.

"Then why?""

Richard's eyes filled with regret.

"Because I fell in love with you.""

I hated that those words still hurt.

Because some part of me believed him.

A loud alarm suddenly sounded.

Everyone froze.

Daniel immediately grabbed his phone.

"Security breach.""

My heart dropped.

"What?""

"They found us.""

The lights flickered.

Outside, engines started.

Multiple vehicles.

Daniel moved quickly.

"Everyone move.""

We grabbed what we could.

Lily.

The documents.

The files.

Everything important.

But before we reached the door, it opened.

Not forced.

Opened.

And standing there was someone I never expected.

My mother.

She looked older.

Tired.

But alive.

Everyone froze.

"Mom...""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"My baby.""

I ran.

I didn't think.

I didn't question.

I just ran into her arms.

For the first time in fifteen years, I felt like a child again.

The world disappeared.

No Victor.

No secrets.

No Richard.

Just my mother.

Holding me.

Crying.

"I'm sorry.""

I buried my face against her shoulder.

"Why?""

She pulled back.

Her hands touched my face.

"Because I promised your father I would protect you.""

My voice shook.

"You let me think you were dead.""

Tears filled her eyes.

"I had no choice.""

"Everyone says that.""

"I know.""

She looked behind me.

At Richard.

Then back at me.

"The truth is worse than you think.""

My heart sank.

"What?""

She took a breath.

"Your father didn't disappear because Victor wanted him gone.""

A pause.

"He disappeared because he discovered who Victor was working for.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"Who?""

My mother's expression changed.

Fear.

Pure fear.

"The person who has controlled Victor from the beginning.""

Nobody moved.

"Who?""

She looked at me.

And whispered:

"The person who raised Richard.""

I turned.

Slowly.

Toward Richard.

His face went pale.

"No.""

My mother nodded.

"Thomas Vance wasn't just Victor's partner.""

The room became silent.

"He was the architect.""

Richard stepped back.

"My father is dead.""

My mother looked at him with sadness.

"I know.""

"Then how?""

She swallowed.

"Because Thomas Vance had one final plan before he died.""

A pause.

"He didn't want money.""

"He didn't want the company.""

She looked at me.

"He wanted the Laurent family destroyed.""

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Victor.

Only one sentence.

*Bring Maya to the old Laurent estate if you want the truth about Thomas Vance.*

Then another message arrived.

A photo.

A man standing in front of the estate.

A man I had not seen in fifteen years.

My father.

Alive.

Underneath the photo:

*Your father has been waiting for you.*

I looked at my mother.

Then Daniel.

Then Richard.

And I knew there was only one place left to go.

The place where my entire life had started.

The Laurent estate.

May you like

Where my family lost everything.

And where I would finally learn why.
