Amused

Chapter 3: The Husband Who Knew Too Much

For five seconds, I couldn't move.

Not because Richard knew.

Because I didn't know *how much* he knew.

The bedroom suddenly felt smaller.

The walls seemed closer.

The air felt heavier.

Behind the door stood the man I had shared a bed with for four years.

The man who had held my hand when Lily was born.

The man who once promised me that I was the only person he would ever choose.

And now I was hearing something I never thought possible.

He knew I was hiding something.

I looked at Lily.

She was sitting quietly on the bed, squeezing her stuffed rabbit.

She didn't understand the conversation.

She only understood that Mommy was scared.

I forced myself to breathe.

Then I walked toward the door.

But I didn't unlock it.

"What do you mean?"" I asked.

Richard was quiet.

Too quiet.

"I mean you have been lying to me since the day I met you.""

My stomach tightened.

"That's not true.""

A small laugh came from the hallway.

"There it is.""

"What?""

"That calm voice.""

I frowned.

"What are you talking about?""

"The voice you use when you think you're smarter than everyone else.""

My hand curled into a fist.

This wasn't the Richard from the backyard.

The angry man who lost control.

This was the Richard I knew best.

The manipulator.

The one who smiled while cutting people down.

"You have always underestimated me," he continued.

I looked at the suitcase beside the bed.

At the hidden documents inside.

At the life I had tried to bury.

"Maybe I just never gave you a reason to know me.""

Silence.

Then Richard said:

"Open the door, Maya.""

"No.""

His voice changed.

"You don't want to do this.""

I almost smiled.

A warning.

From him.

After everything.

"Actually, Richard, I think I do.""

The hallway went silent.

Then I heard his footsteps move away.

For a moment, I thought he was leaving.

Then I heard another sound.

A glass being placed on the floor.

He was sitting outside the door.

Waiting.

That scared me more.

Because angry people acted without thinking.

Patient people planned.

I picked up my phone and texted the number that had messaged me earlier.

*He knows something.*

The reply came almost immediately.

*Who?*

I stared at the screen.

My fingers hesitated.

Then I typed:

*My husband. Richard Vance.*

Three dots appeared.

Disappeared.

Appeared again.

Finally:

*Maya, you need to leave now.*

I looked at Lily.

I couldn't just run.

Not without knowing what I was walking into.

I packed the final things.

Clothes.

Documents.

Medicine.

The old necklace.

Everything that connected Maya Vance to Maya Laurent.

Then I heard a small voice.

"Mommy?""

I turned.

Lily was standing beside the bed.

"Are we going somewhere?""

I knelt.

"Yes.""

"Because Daddy was mean?""

The question hurt more than anything Richard had said.

Children shouldn't have to explain their parents.

I nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

She looked down.

"Is Daddy still my daddy if he hurts you?""

I had no answer ready.

No mother should ever need one.

I pulled her into my arms.

"Yes, sweetheart.""

I held her tightly.

"But someone being your family doesn't mean they get to hurt you.""

A tear slipped down her cheek.

"I don't like when people make you sad.""

I closed my eyes.

Neither did I.

The door suddenly opened.

Not the bedroom door.

The front door.

Voices filled the house.

Olivia.

Vanessa.

Richard.

I froze.

Why were they still here?

I carried Lily toward the closet and whispered:

"Stay very quiet.""

She nodded.

I stepped into the hallway.

Richard was standing near the entrance.

Olivia stood beside him.

And Vanessa was holding her phone.

Still recording.

Of course.

Richard looked at my suitcase.

Then smiled.

"There she is.""

I stared at them.

"What is this?""

Olivia rolled her eyes.

"Your little escape plan is embarrassing.""

Vanessa tilted her head.

"You really thought nobody would notice?""

My eyes moved to Richard.

"What did you tell them?""

He shrugged.

"The truth.""

I almost laughed.

"The truth?""

"Yes.""

He stepped closer.

"I told them my wife has been acting strange for years.""

My expression hardened.

"You mean questioning your affairs?""

Vanessa smiled.

"Careful.""

I looked at her.

She had always been confident.

Too confident.

Like she knew something I didn't.

Richard continued.

"I told them you have secrets.""

Olivia nodded.

"Which is exactly why I never trusted you.""

I looked at her.

A memory came back.

The first time I met Olivia.

She had looked at me like I was something she found on the bottom of her shoe.

A waitress.

A nobody.

Someone beneath her.

She never asked about my past.

Because she didn't care.

She had already decided who I was.

Richard reached for my suitcase.

I stepped back.

"Don't touch that.""

His smile faded slightly.

"You don't give orders in my house.""

I looked around.

The rented house.

The cheap furniture.

The place where I had spent years making myself smaller.

"Your house?""

I repeated.

"That's what you believe?""

Richard stared at me.

Something changed in his face.

A small flicker.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

Fear.

"You don't know what you're talking about.""

"Maybe not.""

I looked directly at him.

"But I know exactly who you are.""

Vanessa lowered her phone.

Richard noticed.

"Go upstairs, Maya.""

"No.""

His jaw tightened.

"Don't make this worse.""

I laughed quietly.

"Worse?""

I looked at Olivia.

"Your son humiliated me in front of my daughter.""

Then Vanessa.

"His mistress recorded it.""

Then Richard.

"And now you're threatening me because I packed a bag?""

Nobody spoke.

For the first time that night, they had no prepared response.

Then Richard said something unexpected.

"You should have stayed hidden.""

The room went completely still.

My heart stopped.

Hidden.

That word.

Not secret.

Not private.

Hidden.

I studied his face.

"Why would you say that?""

He realized his mistake.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

"Yes, you do.""

Richard looked away.

And that was when I knew.

He wasn't guessing.

He wasn't suspicious.

He knew.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

I stepped closer.

"Who told you?""

Nobody answered.

Then Olivia spoke.

"Richard, stop.""

Her voice wasn't angry.

It was afraid.

I turned toward her.

"You knew?""

She looked away.

That was my answer.

The woman who spent four years insulting me.

The woman who claimed I wasn't good enough for her son.

She knew something.

"What did you find?""

I asked.

Richard smiled again.

But this time, the confidence was gone.

"You really want to know?""

I didn't speak.

He walked toward the table and picked up his phone.

Then he opened a file.

A photograph appeared on the screen.

My breath disappeared.

It was me.

Sixteen years old.

Standing beside my father.

At a Laurent Foundation event.

The photo I had hidden.

The photo nobody should have.

Richard watched my reaction.

"I found it three months after we got married.""

My voice barely worked.

"Where?""

"Your old belongings.""

Impossible.

I had hidden everything.

"You went through my things?""

He ignored the question.

"At first, I thought you were just some woman pretending.""

He stepped closer.

"But then I started researching.""

My skin went cold.

"Researching what?""

His eyes locked onto mine.

"Who Maya Laurent was.""

The name sounded strange coming from him.

Like he was stealing something that belonged to me.

"You knew.""

"I suspected.""

"Why didn't you say anything?""

Richard smiled.

And that smile told me everything.

Because I finally understood.

He didn't marry me by accident.

My marriage wasn't a mistake.

It was a plan.

"You were worth a lot more than I realized.""

I felt sick.

The man I loved.

The father of my child.

Had been watching me.

Studying me.

Waiting.

"How long?""

He didn't answer.

"How long did you know?""

Richard glanced at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

"Long enough.""

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A message.

From Daniel.

I looked down.

Only one sentence.

*Maya, get out immediately. Richard Vance is connected to the people who tried to erase your family.*

I looked up.

Richard was watching my face.

He knew I had received something.

And then he said the words that confirmed my worst fear.

"You finally found your old friends, didn't you?""

I froze.

Richard smiled.

"Good.""

He walked closer.

"Because now I don't have to pretend anymore.""

The lights suddenly flickered.

Outside, a car door slammed.

Richard looked toward the window.

And for the first time...

He looked afraid.

"They found us.""

I turned toward the dark driveway.

A black SUV had stopped outside the house.

And someone stepped out.

Someone Richard clearly recognized.

May you like

Someone who made my husband whisper one terrifying sentence:

"Maya... you need to run.""
