Chapter 4: The Man From My Father's Past
For the first time in four years, I saw fear in Richard Vance's eyes.
Not anger.
Not arrogance.
Not the cold confidence he used whenever he wanted to make me feel small.
Fear.
Real fear.
And that terrified me more than anything else.
Because Richard had spent the last hour acting like he controlled the entire situation.
He knew about my identity.
He knew about my past.
He had been hiding secrets from me.
But whoever had stepped out of that black SUV had changed everything.
I stood frozen near the hallway.
Lily was still upstairs.
My first instinct was to run to her.
My second was to get as far away from Richard as possible.
But before I could move, Richard grabbed my wrist.
Not hard.
Not like before.
Almost desperately.
"Listen to me.""
I looked down at his hand.
Then at him.
Slowly, he released me.
That alone told me how serious this was.
Richard never apologized with words.
He apologized with fear.
"Who is that?"" I asked.
He didn't answer.
"Richard.""
His face tightened.
"You don't understand.""
"No.""
My voice became sharper.
"I understand one thing.""
I pointed toward the front door.
"Someone just arrived, and the man who was threatening me ten seconds ago is suddenly terrified.""
Vanessa looked between us.
For the first time all evening, she wasn't smiling.
"Richard?""
He ignored her.
His eyes stayed on me.
"You need to take Lily and leave through the back.""
I almost laughed.
"Now you care about protecting us?""
His expression changed.
A flash of guilt.
Small.
But real.
"I know what you think of me.""
"You don't know anything about what I think.""
"I know I made mistakes.""
I stared at him.
Mistakes.
That was what he called everything.
The lies.
The affair.
The humiliation.
The cruelty.
"Mistakes are forgetting someone's birthday," I whispered.
My voice shook.
"Breaking a promise.""
"Not destroying someone's life.""
The front door knocked.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone stopped breathing.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Olivia suddenly looked pale.
"Richard...""
He didn't respond.
The person outside knocked again.
This time louder.
Richard moved toward the door.
I grabbed his arm.
"No.""
He looked at me.
"You don't know who that is.""
"Neither do you.""
His eyes darkened.
"Yes, I do.""
The answer sent a chill through me.
Before I could ask anything else, the door opened.
Not because Richard opened it.
Because the person outside pushed it.
A man stepped inside.
He looked to be in his late sixties.
Gray hair.
Dark coat.
A calm expression that somehow felt more dangerous than anger.
Behind him stood two other men.
Security.
The kind of security that didn't come from a neighborhood company.
The kind of security that belonged to people with power.
The older man looked around the room.
His eyes stopped on me.
And then his entire expression changed.
Not fear.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
"Maya.""
My body went cold.
I had not heard that voice in fifteen years.
I couldn't remember his face clearly.
But I remembered that voice.
"Daniel?"" I whispered.
The man nodded.
"I was hoping I would find you before they did.""
Richard stepped forward.
"How did you find this place?""
Daniel looked at him.
And the disappointment in his eyes was obvious.
"That is the question you should be asking yourself.""
Richard's jaw tightened.
"You lied to me.""
Daniel gave a humorless smile.
"No, Richard.""
He glanced at me.
"You lied to everyone.""
I looked between them.
"What is happening?""
Nobody answered.
And that made me angry.
My entire life had been controlled by people keeping secrets.
I was finished.
"No.""
My voice cut through the room.
"Everyone stops talking around me.""
Daniel looked at me.
I stepped forward.
"I disappeared for fifteen years.""
I pointed at Richard.
"My husband knew.""
Then at Olivia.
"His mother knew something.""
Then at Daniel.
"And now you show up telling me my life is in danger.""
My hands trembled.
"I want the truth.""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"You deserve that.""
He reached into his coat and pulled out a small folder.
Old.
Worn.
Like it had been carried for years.
"I kept this because I promised your father I would give it to you only when you were ready.""
He handed it toward me.
I didn't take it immediately.
"What is it?""
"Your father's final letter.""
The room disappeared.
For a moment, I couldn't hear anything.
My father.
A letter.
Something from him.
A man I thought I had lost forever.
I reached for it.
My fingers shook as I opened the folder.
Inside was a single envelope.
My name was written on the front.
Not Maya Vance.
Not the fake name I had used for years.
My real name.
*Maya Elise Laurent.*
My eyes burned.
I opened it.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
My father's handwriting.
My entire childhood flashed through my mind.
Him teaching me chess.
Him burning pancakes because he insisted he could cook.
Him telling me that money meant nothing if you had nobody to love.
Then the first line broke me.
*My beautiful Maya, if you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you.*
I covered my mouth.
Daniel looked away.
Giving me privacy.
The letter continued.
*There are people around me who want control of Laurent Global. They will use anyone. They will hurt anyone. But the person you should fear most is not a stranger.*
My eyes moved down.
Then stopped.
Because the next sentence was impossible.
*The person closest to you is the one who brought danger into our family.*
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
Richard.
Olivia.
Daniel.
I kept reading.
*Trust the person who finds you. Trust the person who knows your mother's final words.*
My heart stopped.
My mother's final words.
Only one person knew them.
One person besides me.
I looked at Daniel.
"You were there.""
His expression softened.
"Yes.""
"You saw what happened?""
He nodded.
"I saw enough.""
"Then why did you let me believe my father abandoned me?""
Pain crossed his face.
"Because your father asked me to.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
"He believed the only way to keep you alive was to make the world think you were gone.""
I shook my head.
"That doesn't make sense.""
"It will.""
He looked toward Richard.
"When Alexander Laurent disappeared from public view, several people started searching for you.""
Richard looked away.
Daniel continued.
"Your father knew someone inside his company was leaking information.""
My stomach tightened.
"Who?""
Daniel didn't answer.
He looked at Olivia.
Then Richard.
And finally Vanessa.
The silence was the answer.
"No," I whispered.
Richard stepped forward.
"Maya, listen.""
I turned toward him.
"You knew.""
His face changed.
"I knew something.""
"You knew who I was.""
"Yes.""
"You knew my father was alive?""
"No.""
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
And somehow I believed that part.
Because Richard looked like a man who had discovered a treasure.
Not a man who knew the entire truth.
"Then why did you marry me?""
The question hung in the room.
Nobody moved.
Richard looked down.
For the first time, he looked ashamed.
"I didn't know who you were when we met.""
I didn't believe him.
"Richard.""
"It's true.""
He looked at me.
"When I met you at that restaurant, you were just Maya.""
The memory came back.
A rainy night.
A lonely customer sitting at my table for hours.
A man who seemed kind.
A man who listened.
A man who made me believe I could finally stop running.
"I fell in love with you.""
I almost hated that those words still affected me.
Almost.
"But then I found the documents.""
His voice lowered.
"And everything changed.""
"How?""
He swallowed.
"Because I realized my wife was the missing Laurent heiress.""
The room became silent.
"And you stayed.""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Richard looked at the floor.
Then said the sentence that hurt more than any insult.
"Because I was curious.""
Not love.
Not loyalty.
Curiosity.
I felt something inside me break.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression immediately changed.
"What?""
Everyone looked at him.
He listened for several seconds.
Then his face turned pale.
"Maya.""
I knew that tone.
Something was wrong.
"What?""
He slowly lowered the phone.
"The video from Lily's birthday.""
My stomach dropped.
"What about it?""
Daniel looked at Richard.
Then me.
"It wasn't just posted online.""
A pause.
"It was sent to someone before it went public.""
"Who?""
Daniel's eyes met mine.
"The person who has been searching for you.""
The room went silent.
"Someone who wants the Laurent fortune.""
He took a breath.
"And they just sent a message.""
My hands went cold.
"What message?""
Daniel looked at Lily's bedroom door.
Then back at me.
The fear returned to his face.
"They said...""
He hesitated.
May you like
Then whispered:
*"We know where Maya Laurent is. Now we want her daughter.""*
