Amused

Chapter 2: The Name I Buried

I stared at the message until the words stopped looking real.

*Maya, we finally found your father.*

For fifteen years, I had imagined what those words would feel like.

I thought I would cry.

I thought my hands would shake.

I thought I would feel relief.

Instead, I felt nothing.

A strange, empty silence settled inside me.

Because there was a part of me that had spent years preparing for this moment.

And another part that had spent years hoping it would never come.

"Mama?""

Lily's small voice pulled me back.

I quickly locked my phone screen.

She was sitting on the bed, holding her stuffed rabbit against her chest.

Her birthday dress was still stained with frosting.

The same frosting that had covered my face minutes earlier.

The same frosting that had become the final proof that I could not stay.

"What is it?"" she asked.

I forced a smile.

"Nothing, sweetheart.""

But Lily had inherited something from me.

She noticed everything.

She tilted her head.

"You're doing your fake smile.""

I froze.

"Your fake smile?"" I repeated.

She nodded seriously.

"The one you do when Daddy is mean and you don't want me to know.""

A four-year-old should not know that kind of smile.

A four-year-old should not understand the difference between happiness and pretending.

I sat down beside her.

"You're very smart, you know that?""

She shrugged.

"Grandma says smart girls are trouble.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

Of course Olivia had said that.

People like Olivia always feared women they couldn't control.

I kissed Lily's forehead.

"Smart girls change the world.""

She smiled.

"Like superheroes?""

"Exactly like superheroes.""

She looked at my phone.

"Was that a superhero message?""

For a moment, I almost laughed.

Instead, I looked away.

"No.""

Because the truth was too complicated.

The message wasn't from a superhero.

It was from the people who had spent years searching for me.

The people who knew I wasn't just Maya.

I was Maya Laurent.

The missing daughter of Alexander Laurent.

The billionaire founder of Laurent Global Holdings.

The girl who disappeared after the night my mother died.

The heiress everyone assumed was dead.

The world knew the story differently.

They said Alexander Laurent's daughter vanished during a family vacation.

They said there were no witnesses.

They said the investigation went cold.

What nobody knew was that I survived.

What nobody knew was that my father's closest friend found me before the media did.

What nobody knew was that I chose to disappear.

Because I was sixteen years old, terrified, grieving, and convinced everyone around me was lying.

So I ran.

I changed my name.

I started over.

And I promised myself I would never return.

Until now.

A knock came at the bedroom door.

I quickly put the phone into my pocket.

"Maya?""

Richard.

His voice was different.

Not angry.

Careful.

That scared me more.

I looked at Lily.

"Stay here for a minute, okay?""

She nodded.

I walked to the door but didn't unlock it.

"What do you want?""

A pause.

Then a sigh.

"Maya, come on.""

"No.""

"You're really going to act like this?""

I almost laughed.

The man who had pushed my face into our daughter's birthday cake was confused because I didn't want to talk.

"I don't know what you think happened out there," he said, "but you embarrassed yourself.""

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The same trick.

Make me question reality.

Make me defend myself.

Make me forget what he did.

"You hurt me," I said.

"You are exaggerating.""

"No, Richard.""

My voice became quieter.

"I am finally remembering.""

Silence.

Then his tone changed.

"You need to calm down.""

I leaned against the door.

For years, those words controlled me.

Calm down.

Don't overreact.

You're too sensitive.

But tonight they sounded different.

They sounded weak.

"I need to leave.""

A sharp laugh came from the hallway.

"Leave?""

"Yes.""

"You think you can just walk away?""

I looked at my daughter.

Then at the suitcase on the floor.

"Yes.""

"You don't have anything.""

That sentence.

Again.

Always that sentence.

You have nothing.

I wondered how many times he had said it because he believed it.

Or because he needed me to believe it.

"You should be careful what you assume about people, Richard.""

He became quiet.

"What does that mean?""

I didn't answer.

Because I wasn't ready to become Maya Laurent again.

Not yet.

Not until I knew the truth.

A few minutes later, Richard walked away.

I waited.

Then I opened my laptop.

The old one I kept hidden beneath winter clothes.

I entered a password nobody in this house knew.

A password I had not typed in fifteen years.

The screen opened.

A single folder appeared.

*LAURENT ARCHIVES.*

My hands hovered above the mouse.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Newspaper articles.

My old life.

I opened the first photo.

A younger version of myself stared back.

Sixteen years old.

Long brown hair.

A nervous smile.

Standing beside my father.

Alexander Laurent.

The man newspapers called a genius.

The man employees called impossible.

The man I called Dad.

I touched the screen.

"I thought you were gone.""

My voice cracked.

Then another memory came.

The night I disappeared.

The rain.

The broken car.

My mother's final words.

*"Don't trust anyone who tells you your father abandoned you.""*

I had never understood what she meant.

Not until now.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, it was a call.

Unknown number.

I stared at it.

Every instinct told me not to answer.

But something stronger told me I needed to.

I picked up.

"Hello?""

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then an older man's voice answered.

"Maya?""

My entire body froze.

Nobody called me that way.

Not with that much emotion.

Not like they had been waiting years to say it.

"Who is this?""

The man took a shaky breath.

"My name is Daniel Reeves.""

The name hit me immediately.

My father's lawyer.

The man who had handled Laurent Global Holdings after my disappearance.

The man everyone said had betrayed my family.

"What do you want?""

"I want to apologize.""

I stood up.

"For what?""

Silence.

Then:

"For helping hide the truth.""

My heart started pounding.

Lily looked up at me.

"Mommy?""

I turned away.

"Daniel, I don't understand.""

"You will.""

His voice lowered.

"Your father never abandoned you.""

I gripped the edge of the desk.

"Then why did everyone say he did?""

"Because someone wanted you to believe that.""

"Who?""

Another pause.

A long one.

Too long.

"Daniel.""

When he finally spoke, his voice sounded afraid.

"The person responsible is someone who is still very close to you.""

My stomach dropped.

I looked toward the bedroom door.

Outside was the house where I had spent four years.

The house where I had married Richard.

The house where I had hidden.

"Who?"" I whispered.

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he said something that made my blood turn cold.

"Maya, before you come back to Laurent Global, you need to know something.""

"What?""

"Your disappearance was never an accident.""

I stopped breathing.

"What are you saying?""

"The person who took you away from your family...""

A sound came from outside the bedroom.

A floorboard creaked.

Someone was standing in the hallway.

I turned.

The door handle slowly moved.

Daniel's voice became urgent.

"Maya, listen to me. Do not tell anyone you know who you are.""

The handle moved again.

"Why?""

"Because if the person who destroyed your family finds out you're alive...""

The door suddenly stopped moving.

I looked at the shadow beneath it.

Someone was standing there.

Listening.

Then Daniel whispered the words I would remember for the rest of my life.

"That person will come after your daughter next.""

The call ended.

I stared at the door.

My hand slowly moved toward the lock.

And then Richard's voice came from the other side.

"Maya?""

I didn't answer.

His voice softened.

"Open the door.""

I stayed silent.

A few seconds passed.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

"I know you have been hiding things from me.""

My fingers tightened around my phone.

Because Richard didn't sound angry.

May you like

He sounded certain.

"I think it's time you tell me who you really are.""
