Amused

Chapter 6: The Truth Beneath His Name

The phone slipped from my hand.

I barely noticed.

My entire body had gone cold.

The room around me blurred.

Daniel's voice.

Olivia's voice.

Richard calling my name.

Everything sounded distant.

Because one sentence kept repeating inside my head.

*Richard Vance is not the man you think he is.*

I looked at my husband.

The man standing across the room.

The man who had kissed my forehead when I was sick.

The man who held Lily's hand when she took her first steps.

The man who had just watched me discover my mother was alive.

And now I had to wonder...

Who had I really been living with?

"Maya.""

Richard stepped toward me.

I moved back immediately.

The pain on his face was obvious.

But I couldn't let it change anything.

Not anymore.

"Don't.""

He stopped.

"I heard what she said.""

His jaw tightened.

"You don't know the whole story.""

I almost smiled.

That sentence.

Everyone had used it.

Every secret came with the same excuse.

You don't know the whole story.

Maybe I didn't.

But I knew enough.

"You knew my mother was alive?""

"No.""

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

I watched his face.

The old Maya would have searched for proof that he was telling the truth.

The new Maya watched his reaction.

And I saw something.

Not guilt.

Not surprise.

Fear.

"Then why did she say your name?""

Richard looked away.

That was the answer.

I turned to Daniel.

"Tell me everything.""

Daniel was silent.

"Now.""

He nodded slowly.

"The truth is complicated.""

"I have spent fifteen years living a lie.""

My voice cracked.

"I think I can handle complicated.""

Daniel looked at Richard.

"Maybe not here.""

I followed his eyes.

At my husband.

At Olivia.

At Vanessa.

Too many secrets.

Too many people.

"No.""

I shook my head.

"Everyone stays.""

Richard looked at me.

"Maya.""

"No.""

I pointed at him.

"You don't get to decide when I deserve the truth.""

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Daniel.

"Start.""

He took a deep breath.

"Your father, Alexander Laurent, built Laurent Global with one belief.""

I frowned.

"What belief?""

"That power attracts people who don't deserve it.""

Daniel glanced at Richard.

"And he was right.""

Richard looked angry.

"Careful.""

Daniel ignored him.

"Years ago, your father discovered financial fraud inside the company.""

My chest tightened.

"Who?""

"Several people.""

"Names.""

Daniel hesitated.

Then:

"One of them was Thomas Vance.""

Richard's father.

The room went silent.

I looked at Richard.

His face changed.

"You knew.""

He didn't answer.

"You knew your father was involved with my family.""

Richard swallowed.

"I knew my father had business connections with Laurent Global.""

"That's not what I asked.""

His silence hurt more than a confession.

Daniel continued.

"Thomas Vance wasn't just a businessman. He was part of a group that wanted control of your father's company.""

I looked down.

"Why?""

"Because Alexander Laurent refused to sell.""

Of course.

My father.

The man who built everything himself.

The man who believed money should protect people, not destroy them.

"What happened the night I disappeared?""

Nobody moved.

Daniel's voice became quieter.

"Your father found evidence.""

"What kind?""

"Evidence that could destroy powerful people.""

My fingers tightened.

"And my mother?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Your mother discovered it too.""

The room felt colder.

"Then why did everyone say she died?""

Daniel looked toward Olivia.

She lowered her eyes.

"Because someone wanted you to stop looking.""

My heart pounded.

"Who?""

Before Daniel could answer, Richard spoke.

"Me.""

Everyone turned.

I stared at him.

"What?""

Richard looked exhausted.

Like he had been fighting himself for years.

"My family was involved.""

My breathing stopped.

"Your family.""

He nodded.

"My father.""

I felt sick.

The man I married carried the name of the people who destroyed my family.

But then he said something unexpected.

"I didn't know the truth when I met you.""

I looked at him.

"How convenient.""

"I know how it sounds.""

"Because it's true.""

He looked down.

"When I was a child, I thought my father was a successful businessman.""

A bitter smile crossed his face.

"I thought he was a hero.""

He looked at Daniel.

"Then I found out what he had done.""

Nobody spoke.

"When?""

"Years before I met you.""

My eyes narrowed.

"Then why did you marry me?""

His face broke slightly.

"I told you.""

"You were curious?""

He flinched.

Because he knew that was what he had said.

But now there was more.

"I was trying to find out what happened.""

"By pretending to love me?""

"No.""

His voice was immediate.

"I loved you.""

The words hurt.

Because I wanted to believe them.

That was the worst part.

"I loved you before I knew.""

"Then why stay?""

He looked at Lily's bedroom door.

"Because after I found out who you were...""

He paused.

"I realized you were in danger.""

I stared at him.

"That doesn't explain anything.""

"I tried to protect you.""

I laughed softly.

"By cheating on me?""

His face fell.

The room became silent.

Because there was no excuse for Vanessa.

No hidden reason.

No explanation.

"I was angry," he admitted.

The honesty surprised me.

"At what?""

"My father.""

He looked at the floor.

"At my family.""

"At myself.""

He swallowed.

"And I took it out on you.""

For a second, I saw regret.

Real regret.

But regret did not erase damage.

It did not rebuild trust.

It did not remove the image of my face pushed into Lily's birthday cake.

"You don't get to become a good person because you finally feel guilty.""

His eyes closed.

"I know.""

That was the first thing he had said all night that sounded honest.

Then my phone buzzed again.

A message.

From my mother.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*Do not trust Richard until you know what happened the night your father disappeared.*

I showed Daniel.

His expression changed.

"She knows.""

"Knows what?""

Daniel looked at Richard.

"I don't know.""

Richard stepped forward.

"Maya, please.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"I need to tell you something before she does.""

My heart sank.

"Something worse?""

He looked away.

"Yes.""

Nobody spoke.

Richard walked toward the table.

He picked up Vanessa's phone.

She immediately reached for it.

"What are you doing?""

He ignored her.

Then he opened a folder.

A video file.

My stomach tightened.

"What is that?""

Richard looked at me.

"The reason I knew about you.""

He pressed play.

The screen showed a dark room.

A man sitting at a table.

Older.

I couldn't see his face clearly.

But I recognized the voice.

My blood turned cold.

Because I had heard it once before.

On the night my life changed.

The man on the video said:

"Find Maya Laurent before she remembers.""

I stopped breathing.

Richard looked at me.

"I found this six months after we married.""

The video continued.

The man said:

"And if she has a child...""

A pause.

Then:

"Use the child.""

Lily.

My hand flew to my mouth.

"No.""

Richard stopped the video.

"I never sent this.""

I stared at him.

"Who did?""

He looked terrified.

"Someone who has been watching us.""

Daniel moved closer.

"Who recorded it?""

Richard shook his head.

"I don't know.""

"Who is the man?""

Richard hesitated.

Then whispered:

"The person who paid my father.""

The room went silent.

"Who?""

Richard looked at me.

And for the first time...

I saw him truly afraid for me.

"My grandfather.""

I froze.

"Your grandfather is alive?""

Richard nodded.

And then he said the name that made Daniel's face lose all color.

"Alexander Laurent's former business partner.""

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that name.

Everyone knew that name.

The man who disappeared after my father's downfall.

The man believed to be dead.

The man who had once been my family's closest friend.

Richard whispered:

"Victor Hale.""

Daniel stepped back.

"No.""

I looked at him.

"Who is Victor Hale?""

Daniel's voice was barely audible.

"The man your father trusted more than anyone.""

A pause.

Then:

"The man who betrayed him.""

Outside, a car engine suddenly started.

Everyone turned.

Through the window, I saw headlights.

A black vehicle leaving the driveway.

Richard's face changed.

"He's here.""

I looked at him.

"Who?""

Richard stared at the road.

"The person who has been controlling everything.""

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

No one spoke at first.

Then a man's voice came through.

An old voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

"Maya.""

I couldn't breathe.

Because I knew that voice.

It was the voice from the video.

The voice behind everything.

"You finally remembered who you are.""

My hand trembled.

"Who are you?""

A soft laugh.

"You used to call me Uncle Victor.""

The line went silent for a moment.

Then he said:

"And now I need you to know the truth.""

I held my breath.

"The man you married was never supposed to save you.""

May you like

A pause.

"He was supposed to deliver you to me.""
