Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew My Name Before I Did
Richard Hale stopped a few feet away from us.
He didn't look surprised.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Not the folder in his hand.
Not the expensive suit.
Not the fact that Daniel looked like he had just seen a ghost.
Richard Hale wasn't shocked to find me standing outside the hotel in a torn wedding dress with my husband surrounded by security.
He expected this.
Which meant one terrifying thing.
He knew this moment was coming.
I looked at Daniel.
"You know him.""
Daniel didn't answer.
Richard looked between us.
Then he spoke calmly.
"Daniel.""
His voice carried the weight of someone who had spent decades being obeyed.
"Is this what you planned?""
Daniel swallowed.
"No.""
Richard's eyes moved to me.
"Then I assume she found the files.""
The silence was enough.
I looked down at the folder in his hand.
"My name is on that.""
Richard nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
He didn't answer immediately.
That bothered me more than a lie would have.
People who are hiding something rush to explain.
People who know they have power take their time.
"I think," Richard said, "you deserve to hear the truth from someone who isn't trying to protect himself.""
His eyes moved to Daniel.
Daniel looked away.
That hurt.
Because for seven years, I thought Daniel was the person who would stand beside me when everything fell apart.
Now everyone else seemed more willing to tell me the truth than he was.
I stepped forward.
"Open the folder.""
Daniel immediately reacted.
"Elena, wait.""
I turned toward him.
"Why?""
He had no answer.
"Because it will hurt?""
His silence confirmed it.
I looked back at Richard.
"Open it.""
Richard handed me the folder.
The moment my fingers touched it, I felt something strange.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Like some part of me already knew this contained a piece of my life I had never been allowed to see.
Inside were documents.
Old contracts.
Photographs.
Letters.
And one envelope.
My name was written across it.
Not typed.
Handwritten.
By someone I recognized instantly.
My father.
I froze.
My father had been gone for two years.
But I knew his handwriting.
Every curve.
Every letter.
Every time he wrote my name.
My fingers shook as I opened it.
Inside was a single page.
*Elena,*
*If you are reading this, then Daniel failed to keep the promise he made.*
My heart stopped.
I kept reading.
*I never wanted you involved in the Mercer situation. I wanted you to have a normal life. But some debts are not paid with money. Some are paid with consequences.*
I looked up.
"What is this?""
Nobody answered.
I continued.
*The day you meet Daniel, you will believe it is a coincidence. It is not.*
My throat tightened.
I looked at Daniel.
He couldn't look at me.
*But before you judge him, understand this: Daniel was not the person who started the damage. He was the person trapped inside it.*
I stopped.
That wasn't what I expected.
I expected another betrayal.
Another reason to hate him.
But my father was defending him.
Why?
The next line made my blood run cold.
*The person you need to fear is not Daniel Mercer.*
My eyes moved lower.
*It is the person who has been controlling the Mercer family for years.*
I slowly looked up.
Everyone's eyes moved toward Lorraine.
Her face had gone pale.
"Your father was always dramatic," she said.
The confidence was gone.
That was the first time I had ever seen Lorraine afraid.
I folded the letter.
"You knew.""
She didn't answer.
"You knew my father wrote this.""
Still nothing.
Richard spoke.
"She knew.""
Lorraine turned toward him.
"You have no right.""
Richard gave a humorless smile.
"I have every right. I was there when the agreement was made.""
Agreement.
That word again.
Everything kept returning to that word.
I looked at Daniel.
"What agreement?""
He looked exhausted.
"Elena...""
"No.""
My voice cracked.
"I am done hearing my name followed by a warning.""
The hotel entrance doors opened.
Several guests had gathered near the glass, watching.
I didn't care anymore.
Let them watch.
Let everyone see.
For years, Daniel's family controlled the story.
Tonight, the story was finally mine.
Richard looked at Daniel.
"Tell her.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Richard.""
"Tell her.""
A long silence passed.
Then Daniel spoke.
"When my father died, the company was almost destroyed.""
I listened.
"My father had made bad decisions. He borrowed money from the wrong people.""
Richard nodded.
"And Elena's father helped him.""
I looked at the letter again.
"Why?""
Daniel looked at me.
"Because your father believed people deserved a second chance.""
I almost laughed.
"My father saved your family?""
"Yes.""
"Then why was this hidden from me?""
Daniel looked down.
"Because the agreement had conditions.""
My stomach tightened.
"What conditions?""
Richard answered.
"Your father didn't give the Mercer family money.""
He stepped closer.
"He gave them time.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"It means he bought control of the debt.""
I stared at him.
"And what does that have to do with me?""
Richard looked at the folder.
"Everything.""
My hands went cold.
"No.""
Richard's expression softened.
"Elena.""
"Don't.""
I didn't want sympathy.
Not from him.
Not from anyone.
"Just tell me.""
Richard took a breath.
"Your father created a trust.""
I waited.
"A trust connected to the Mercer company.""
I shook my head.
"That's impossible.""
"It was created before you knew Daniel.""
"Why?""
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel said quietly:
"Because your father knew something was wrong.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
"He knew my father was hiding money.""
The pieces started moving.
Slowly.
Painfully.
"My father knew?""
Daniel nodded.
"He discovered that my father had been using company funds illegally.""
"And?""
"And before he could expose him, he got sick.""
My chest tightened.
My father had died from a sudden illness.
At least, that's what I believed.
"What are you saying?""
Richard looked at Lorraine.
Then back at me.
"Your father suspected he was betrayed.""
A silence followed.
Then Lorraine spoke.
"Enough.""
Everyone turned.
Her voice was no longer soft.
No longer controlled.
It was angry.
"Richard, you have said enough.""
Richard smiled slightly.
"You always did hate when people told Elena the truth.""
My eyes locked onto Lorraine.
"You.""
She looked at me.
For the first time, there was no pretending.
No fake warmth.
No motherly performance.
Just calculation.
"You have no idea what you're stepping into.""
I took a step toward her.
"I think I've been standing in it for years.""
She shook her head.
"You think Daniel used you.""
I waited.
"He did.""
The admission shocked everyone.
Even Daniel.
Lorraine continued.
"But not the way you think.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Mom.""
She ignored him.
"Daniel was supposed to marry you because your father wanted the trust transferred to someone he trusted.""
My heart pounded.
"Transferred?""
"Yes.""
I looked at Daniel.
His face was full of regret.
"I didn't know at first.""
I stared at him.
"You didn't know what?""
"The full plan.""
Richard interrupted.
"Because Lorraine didn't tell him everything.""
Lorraine's eyes flashed.
"Careful.""
Richard stepped closer.
"Or what?""
The tension between them felt ancient.
Older than my relationship.
Older than the wedding.
Older than me.
I looked at the folder again.
At my father's letter.
At Daniel.
At Lorraine.
And I realized something terrifying.
My wedding wasn't the beginning of this story.
It was the final move in a game that started before I ever met him.
My phone buzzed.
A new message appeared.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
*Ask Richard why your father really died.*
My hands went numb.
Because underneath the message was a photograph.
A photograph of my father.
Taken the night before he died.
And standing beside him was Daniel's father.
But there was one more person in the picture.
Someone I recognized immediately.
Someone who had been standing beside me at my wedding.
Lorraine Mercer.
Alive.
May you like
Smiling.
And holding the same folder that was now in my hands.
