Chapter 3: The Money That Was Never Missing
The words hung in the air.
"They found the missing money.""
Daniel said it quietly, but everyone heard him.
The ballroom that had once been filled with wedding music now felt like a courtroom.
People weren't looking at me anymore.
They were looking at him.
The successful businessman.
The charming groom.
The man who had spent the last year telling everyone his company was experiencing "temporary financial challenges.""
Temporary.
That was Daniel's favorite word.
Temporary problems.
Temporary setbacks.
Temporary debt.
Temporary stress.
Everything was temporary when he needed sympathy.
But somehow, the money disappearing from his company accounts had lasted long enough for him to need my help.
I watched him stare at his phone.
The call from the bank was still waiting.
He didn't answer.
"Daniel," Lorraine whispered.
"Pick up.""
He didn't move.
"Daniel.""
Her voice was sharper this time.
That finally broke him out of his silence.
He answered.
"Hello?""
Everyone watched his face.
At first, he tried to maintain control.
"Yes, this is Daniel Mercer.""
A pause.
"Yes, I understand.""
Another pause.
His fingers tightened around the phone.
"No, that's not possible.""
I studied him carefully.
Seven years in corporate compliance had taught me something important.
People reveal themselves when facts become impossible to manipulate.
Daniel was not listening to bad news.
He was listening to evidence.
"Can you explain what you're seeing?"" he asked.
His voice was getting weaker.
A guest near the front table leaned toward another.
"What happened?""
The other person whispered back:
"I don't know, but it looks serious.""
Daniel walked several steps away.
But not far enough.
Not from me.
Not from the truth.
"I never authorized that transfer.""
A chill ran through me.
There it was.
A sentence that sounded like a denial.
But it wasn't.
Because nobody had accused him of authorizing anything yet.
He was already defending himself.
I looked at the flash drive in my hand.
The files inside weren't just about money.
They were about patterns.
Unusual transfers.
Fake vendor accounts.
Invoices from companies that didn't exist.
I had discovered them while reviewing Daniel's business records.
At first, I convinced myself there had to be an explanation.
A mistake.
A dishonest employee.
A bookkeeping error.
Because the alternative was too painful.
The man I loved had built his entire life on a story.
And I had been the person helping him tell it.
Until I found the truth.
Daniel ended the call.
His face looked empty.
Not angry.
Not scared.
Empty.
"What did they say?"" Lorraine demanded.
He didn't answer.
"Daniel!""
He looked at her.
"The bank froze the business accounts.""
A wave of whispers spread through the room.
Lorraine went pale.
"What?""
"They said there are suspicious transactions connected to company funds.""
Her eyes immediately moved toward me.
And I knew exactly what she was thinking.
"Elena.""
Her voice was low.
"You did this.""
I almost smiled.
"Interesting.""
"What?""
"You found out the money was missing, and your first thought was that I caused it.""
Daniel looked at me.
"Stop.""
"No.""
My voice stayed calm.
"I want to understand.""
I took one step closer.
"When your company needed money, who did you call?""
Nobody answered.
"When your equipment loans were overdue, who paid them?""
Daniel looked away.
"When your investors threatened to leave, who reviewed every contract?""
Still nothing.
I pointed at the flash drive.
"And when I find evidence that something is wrong, suddenly I'm the enemy.""
Daniel rubbed his face.
"You don't understand.""
"Then explain.""
He looked around.
At the guests.
At his mother.
At the guards.
At me.
Then he lowered his voice.
"Not here.""
I laughed softly.
"You keep saying that.""
"Because this isn't the place.""
"No, Daniel.""
I shook my head.
"This is exactly the place.""
I looked around the ballroom.
"These people came here to celebrate a marriage.""
I glanced at the untouched wedding cake.
"They should know what they were celebrating.""
Lorraine stepped between us.
"You are being cruel.""
I looked at her.
"Cruel?""
She folded her arms.
"You are destroying your husband's reputation in front of everyone.""
I stared at her.
"My husband destroyed his own reputation.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"You need to be careful.""
The threat was quiet.
But I heard it.
And so did everyone else.
I tilted my head.
"Are you threatening me?""
"No.""
"Because it sounds like you are.""
"I am telling you that you don't know what you're doing.""
I looked at the man who slapped me less than an hour after promising to love me forever.
"You know what is interesting, Daniel?""
"What?""
"You always assumed I was dangerous because I was smart.""
He frowned.
"I never said that.""
"You didn't have to.""
I touched my clutch.
"You spent seven years telling me I was brilliant.""
A pause.
"Until my intelligence became inconvenient.""
His face tightened.
That hit him.
Because it was true.
Daniel loved my intelligence when it helped him.
He hated it when it exposed him.
A hotel employee approached carefully.
"Mrs. Mercer?""
I turned.
The title sounded strange.
Like a costume I had already removed.
"Yes?""
"Your father is on the phone.""
My heart skipped.
"My father?""
The employee nodded.
"He said it's urgent.""
I stepped away.
For a moment, everything else disappeared.
My father rarely called during important events.
Especially not weddings.
Especially not after midnight.
I took the phone.
"Dad?""
His voice was tense.
"Elena.""
Something in his tone made my stomach tighten.
"What happened?""
"Are you alone?""
I looked across the room.
Daniel was watching me.
Lorraine was watching me.
Everyone was watching me.
"No.""
A pause.
Then my father lowered his voice.
"Then listen carefully.""
I waited.
"The documents you found.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"How do you know about those?""
Another pause.
"Because I helped create the backup.""
I froze.
"What?""
My father sighed.
"Elena, there's something Daniel never told you.""
I looked toward Daniel.
He was staring at me.
Like he already knew.
Like he knew exactly who was on the phone.
"What is it?""
My father's next words changed everything.
"Those missing funds weren't stolen from Daniel's company.""
My eyebrows pulled together.
"Then where did they come from?""
Silence.
Then:
"Your accounts.""
The ballroom seemed to tilt.
I couldn't speak.
My father continued.
"Seven years ago, when you first invested in Mercer Construction, you didn't just become Daniel's partner.""
My breathing slowed.
"What are you saying?""
"I am saying Daniel didn't marry you because he needed help building his company.""
I looked at Daniel.
His face had gone completely white.
My father's voice became heavier.
"He married you because he needed access to something much bigger.""
The phone nearly slipped from my hand.
"What?""
A long pause.
Then my father said the sentence I would remember for the rest of my life.
"Elena, check the flash drive again.""
I stared at the small device in my hand.
"I already checked it.""
"No.""
His voice became urgent.
"You checked the files Daniel wanted you to find.""
My blood went cold.
"What does that mean?""
"It means there is another folder.""
I looked at the flash drive.
"The hidden folder.""
My eyes moved back to Daniel.
And for the first time that night, he wasn't looking at me like an angry husband.
He was looking at me like a man who knew his biggest secret had just been discovered.
I ended the call.
Slowly, I walked back toward him.
"Daniel.""
He didn't answer.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
His lips parted.
"Elena...""
I held up the flash drive.
"What's in the hidden folder?""
The color drained from his face.
Because he knew.
And I knew.
Whatever was inside wasn't about his company.
It wasn't about missing money.
It was about me.
Daniel took one step backward.
May you like
And whispered:
"Who told you about that?""
