Amused

Chapter 2: The Call That Changed Everything

The name on Daniel's phone glowed against the black screen.

*Victor Hale.*

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Not Daniel.

Not Lorraine.

Not even me.

Because Victor Hale wasn't just another one of Daniel's business contacts.

He was the man who had built the Mercer Construction empire from the ground up before handing the company over to his only son.

Daniel's father.

And he was also the person who had called me six months earlier after noticing irregularities in the company's financial reports.

The same irregularities Daniel begged me to ignore.

The same irregularities that were now sitting inside my bridal clutch on a tiny silver flash drive.

Daniel quickly reached for the phone.

I stepped between him and the table.

"Don't.""

His eyes narrowed.

"Move, Elena.""

"No.""

The ballroom was still frozen.

Guests who had arrived expecting champagne and dancing were now watching a family collapse in real time.

Lorraine's face had turned bright red.

"You are humiliating this family.""

I looked at her.

"No, Lorraine. Your son did that himself.""

Daniel clenched his fists.

"You have no idea what you're doing.""

A small smile crossed my lips.

"Actually, Daniel, that's the one thing you should know about me.""

I picked up my bridal clutch.

"I always know exactly what I'm doing.""

The hotel guards stood nearby, unsure whether they should escort someone out or simply continue watching the disaster unfold.

Then Daniel's phone stopped ringing.

A second later, it rang again.

Victor wasn't giving up.

Daniel stared at the screen.

His confidence was gone.

That was when I knew.

The call mattered.

Very much.

"Answer it," I said.

He looked at me.

"What?""

"Answer it.""

Lorraine stepped forward.

"Daniel, don't listen to her.""

But he did.

He picked up the phone.

"Hello?""

The room was quiet enough that I could hear the faint voice coming from the speaker.

Daniel's expression changed almost immediately.

"Yes, Dad.""

A pause.

"No, everything is fine.""

Another pause.

His eyes flickered toward me.

"No. She's just being emotional.""

I almost laughed.

Emotional.

That was the word men used when women stopped accepting disrespect.

I folded my arms.

Daniel listened for another few seconds.

Then his face went pale.

"What?""

The room shifted.

Even Lorraine noticed.

"What did he say?"" she whispered.

Daniel turned away.

"Dad, that's impossible.""

A longer silence.

Then:

"Who told you that?""

My heart slowed.

Because I knew.

Victor didn't call on my wedding day by coincidence.

He knew something.

Daniel ended the call.

For a moment, he just stood there.

Then he looked at me.

Not with anger.

With fear.

"What did you send him?""

The question confirmed everything.

I tilted my head.

"I didn't send him anything.""

"Don't lie to me.""

"You should be careful with accusations.""

His voice dropped.

"You've been digging.""

The ballroom guests exchanged confused looks.

Lorraine stepped closer.

"What is he talking about?""

Daniel ignored her.

"You went through company records.""

I looked at the man I was supposed to marry.

The man who had once told me I was the smartest person he knew.

Now he looked at me like intelligence was a crime.

"I reviewed documents that were given to me.""

"You had no right.""

"No right?""

I laughed softly.

"Daniel, you asked me to help fix your company's compliance issues.""

His face tightened.

"I asked you to help. Not investigate me.""

There it was.

The truth.

Not an apology.

Not denial.

A confession hidden inside anger.

I looked around the room.

At the investors.

At the employees who had attended.

At the people who had believed Daniel was a successful businessman.

"I didn't investigate you," I said.

"I discovered you.""

The silence afterward was heavier than any scream.

Lorraine stepped forward.

"You think you can destroy my son because you had one disagreement?""

I looked at her.

"One disagreement?""

I opened my clutch.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Every person in the room watched.

I removed the small flash drive.

Daniel's face changed.

The color drained from it.

"Elena.""

His voice was quieter now.

Almost pleading.

"Don't.""

That one word told me everything.

The powerful man who slapped me in front of everyone was suddenly afraid of a piece of plastic smaller than my thumb.

I held it between my fingers.

"This contains copies of financial records.""

Lorraine shook her head.

"You're threatening us?""

"No.""

I looked at Daniel.

"I'm protecting myself.""

He stepped closer.

"Please.""

The word surprised me.

Daniel Mercer had not said please to me in months.

Not when he needed money.

Not when his company was failing.

Not when he asked me to work eighteen-hour days reviewing contracts.

But now?

Now he could say it.

"Elena, let's talk privately.""

I stared at him.

"Privately?""

He nodded quickly.

"Yes.""

I looked at the guests.

Then back at him.

"You already had a private conversation with me.""

His eyebrows pulled together.

"What?""

"Five minutes ago.""

I touched my cheek.

"You told me I embarrassed you.""

His face fell slightly.

"You hit me because your mother wanted me to serve your guests.""

I held up the flash drive.

"And now you want privacy because you're afraid of what's on this?""

Daniel looked away.

That was answer enough.

A woman near the back whispered:

"Is this about money?""

Another guest replied:

"I heard his company was struggling.""

The rumors had started.

And Daniel knew it.

He turned toward the guards.

"This is a family matter.""

One guard remained calm.

"Sir, we were asked to make sure everyone stays safe.""

Daniel looked at me.

"You called security on me?""

"I called security because my husband assaulted me.""

The word husband sounded strange now.

Like something already dead.

Lorraine suddenly grabbed my arm.

"You ungrateful girl.""

The guard immediately stepped forward.

"Ma'am, please step back.""

She released me.

Her eyes were full of hatred.

"After everything we did for you.""

I looked at her.

"Tell me one thing, Lorraine.""

"What?""

"When you accepted my money to save Daniel's company, did you call me family?""

She didn't answer.

"When I paid off his equipment loans, did you call me family?""

Still nothing.

"When I spent nights fixing his contracts and finding the mistakes that almost got him sued, did you call me family?""

Her silence became louder than any response.

I nodded.

"That's what I thought.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"You think you won?""

I looked at him.

"No.""

I tightened my grip around the flash drive.

"I think I finally stopped losing.""

For the first time all night, Daniel looked small.

Not because he had lost money.

Not because his reputation was damaged.

Because he realized the woman he underestimated had been watching everything.

The woman he thought would stay quiet.

The woman he thought loved him too much to leave.

I turned toward the exit.

My wedding dress trailed behind me across the marble floor.

But before I reached the doors, Daniel spoke.

"Elena.""

I stopped.

His voice sounded different.

Less angry.

More desperate.

"You don't know the whole story.""

I slowly turned around.

"Then explain it.""

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because explanations only work when you have something believable to say.

Then his phone rang again.

This time, Daniel didn't move.

He stared at it.

The screen lit up.

Another name.

Another person.

Someone who had no reason to call unless something was wrong.

I couldn't see the name from where I stood.

But Daniel could.

And his face changed.

The fear returned.

"Who is it?"" Lorraine asked.

Daniel didn't answer.

I walked closer.

"Who is calling?""

He slowly looked up.

And for the first time in seven years, I saw the truth on his face.

Not anger.

Not arrogance.

Panic.

Because whoever was calling knew about the documents.

And they knew something I didn't.

Daniel swallowed.

"It's the bank.""

The ballroom went silent again.

May you like

And then he whispered the words that made my blood run cold.

"They found the missing money.""
