Chapter 4: The Folder He Never Wanted Me to Find
The question should have frightened me.
It didn't.
Because fear was something you felt when you didn't know the truth.
I had spent months living inside Daniel's carefully designed world.
Every time something felt wrong, I convinced myself I was overthinking.
Every time he changed the subject, I told myself he was stressed.
Every time Lorraine made a cruel comment, I told myself she was just old-fashioned.
But standing in that ballroom, holding the flash drive he was terrified of, I finally understood something.
Daniel wasn't afraid of losing me.
He was afraid of losing control.
I looked at him.
"Answer me.""
His eyes moved around the room.
Too many witnesses.
Too many people who had seen him lose his temper.
Too many people who had heard me ask a question he couldn't answer.
"Elena, we need to leave.""
I almost laughed.
"Leave?""
"Yes.""
"You mean run?""
His jaw tightened.
"Don't make this worse.""
I stared at him.
"You still think this is something I'm doing.""
Daniel stepped closer.
His voice lowered.
"Please.""
The word sounded strange coming from him.
Daniel Mercer had always been good at making people believe he was in control.
Even when he was failing.
Even when he was desperate.
Especially when he was desperate.
But now everyone could see it.
The cracks were showing.
I held up the flash drive.
"What is the hidden folder?""
He looked at it.
Then away.
"Nothing.""
I smiled.
"Nothing?""
"Yes.""
"Then why are you scared?""
"I'm not scared.""
"You are.""
His silence answered for him.
A man near the table cleared his throat.
"Daniel, what's going on?""
Daniel turned.
The anger returned instantly.
"This is a private family issue.""
The man frowned.
"Private?""
He gestured toward the room.
"You had security called at your wedding.""
Another guest whispered:
"This is about the company, isn't it?""
Daniel's face hardened.
He hated losing control of the story.
That was always his greatest talent.
Not building things.
Not leading people.
Controlling what people believed.
I knew because I had watched him do it for years.
When his company lost a major contract, he told investors the market changed.
When his employees complained about unpaid bonuses, he said there were temporary cash flow issues.
When I questioned missing invoices, he told me accounting was messy.
There was always a reason.
Always someone else responsible.
Never Daniel.
Lorraine walked toward me.
"Give me that.""
I pulled the flash drive away.
"No.""
Her face changed.
"You have no idea what you're holding.""
"Actually, I do.""
"No, you don't.""
She lowered her voice.
"This family has protected you.""
I looked at her.
"Protected me?""
"Yes.""
A bitter laugh escaped my mouth.
"From what?""
She didn't answer.
Because the answer would expose her.
I stepped closer.
"Did you know?""
Her eyes flickered.
That tiny movement told me everything.
"You knew.""
"Elena—"
"You knew.""
The ballroom went silent again.
I looked at Daniel.
Then at Lorraine.
"You both knew something.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Don't do this.""
"Do what?""
"Destroy everything.""
I stared at him.
"You mean reveal everything.""
He looked away.
And there it was.
The difference.
People who are innocent ask questions.
People who are guilty ask you to stop.
I turned toward the exit.
"I need to see what is on this drive.""
Daniel moved quickly.
"Elena.""
I stopped.
"Don't.""
The way he said it made me turn around.
Not because I trusted him.
Because I wanted to hear what excuse he would create next.
His expression had changed.
The anger was gone.
Now there was something else.
Regret.
Or something pretending to be regret.
"I was going to tell you.""
I stared at him.
"When?""
He swallowed.
"After the wedding.""
I laughed.
"After the wedding?""
"Yes.""
"After I signed the marriage license?""
His silence was enough.
"After I legally became your wife?""
"Elena—"
"No.""
My voice cut through the room.
"You weren't planning to tell me.""
I held the flash drive tighter.
"You were planning to trap me.""
His face tightened.
"That's not fair.""
"Fair?""
I looked at the wedding dress.
The flowers.
The cake.
Everything that was supposed to represent a future.
"Fair would have been telling me the truth before I walked down the aisle.""
Daniel looked exhausted.
"I was trying to protect you.""
I almost believed him.
For one second.
Because that was the most dangerous thing about Daniel.
He knew exactly how to sound sincere.
But then I remembered the slap.
I remembered his mother's tray.
I remembered him watching me stand there and choosing his family's pride over me.
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You were protecting yourself.""
A tear formed in Lorraine's eyes.
I almost hated that it worked.
Almost.
She had spent years making me feel like I was too sensitive.
Now she wanted to look like the wounded mother.
"You have no idea what this family has sacrificed.""
I looked at her.
"Then tell me.""
She froze.
"Tell me what you sacrificed.""
Nothing.
Again.
Only silence.
A hotel manager approached the guards and spoke quietly.
Then he turned toward us.
"Mr. Mercer, we need everyone to remain calm.""
Daniel looked embarrassed.
That embarrassed him more than anything else.
Not the violence.
Not the lies.
The fact that strangers were seeing him as someone ordinary.
Someone accountable.
I walked outside.
The night air hit my face.
The ballroom doors closed behind me, muffling the whispers.
For the first time all evening, I was alone.
Almost.
Because my hands were shaking.
Not from fear.
From realization.
I sat on a bench outside the hotel entrance.
My wedding dress spread around me.
A bride abandoned by her own wedding.
A woman who had spent seven years building a future with someone who had been building a cage.
I opened my clutch.
The flash drive sat inside.
Small.
Ordinary.
Dangerous.
I plugged it into my laptop from my car.
The screen lit up.
Folders appeared.
Financial Reports.
Invoices.
Vendor Records.
Everything I had already seen.
I clicked through them.
Nothing.
Then I noticed something.
A tiny folder with no name.
Just a blank space.
Hidden.
My father was right.
My heartbeat increased.
I clicked it.
A password box appeared.
I froze.
Of course.
Of course Daniel had protected it.
But I knew him.
Maybe better than anyone.
I tried the first password.
His birthday.
Wrong.
The company name.
Wrong.
Our anniversary date.
Wrong.
I stared at the screen.
Then I typed one more thing.
The password Daniel used for everything when we first met.
The name of the person he said changed his life.
*Elena.*
The folder opened.
I stopped breathing.
Inside were three files.
The first one was a scanned document.
The title made my hands go cold.
*Mercer Acquisition Plan.*
The second file was a spreadsheet.
The third was a video.
I opened the spreadsheet first.
Rows of numbers filled the screen.
Transfers.
Accounts.
Dates.
Then I saw my name.
Not once.
Not twice.
Hundreds of times.
My stomach turned.
I clicked the video.
Daniel appeared on screen.
Six months earlier.
Sitting in his office.
Talking to someone off-camera.
Someone whose voice I recognized immediately.
Lorraine.
Daniel looked younger.
Calmer.
And then he said:
"Once Elena signs the marriage documents, her investment shares become easier to access.""
I covered my mouth.
The video continued.
Lorraine's voice answered:
"Are you sure she won't discover what happened?""
Daniel smiled.
A smile I had never seen before.
Cold.
Calculating.
"She loves me. She won't look too closely.""
The world stopped.
I watched the man I loved laugh about my trust.
About my loyalty.
About my love.
Then Daniel's voice came through the speakers again.
"After the wedding, we transfer everything before she realizes.""
I closed the laptop.
I couldn't watch anymore.
The pain wasn't sharp.
It was worse.
It was empty.
Because the person who betrayed you isn't a stranger.
It's the person you defended.
The person you chose.
The person you planned to grow old with.
My phone suddenly rang.
I looked down.
Daniel.
I almost ignored it.
Almost.
Then I answered.
Neither of us spoke for several seconds.
Finally, he said:
"Elena.""
His voice was broken.
"I know you found it.""
I looked back at the laptop.
"Yes.""
A pause.
Then:
"Please listen to me.""
I closed my eyes.
"Why?""
"Because there is something you don't know.""
I laughed quietly.
"Is that what you tell yourself?""
"No.""
His voice cracked.
"Elena, the video you found...""
I waited.
"The video isn't the beginning.""
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"What does that mean?""
Silence.
Then Daniel whispered:
"It means my mother was the one who started this.""
I looked toward the hotel doors.
Where Lorraine was probably still standing.
Still pretending.
Still hiding.
"Daniel.""
"What?""
I lowered my voice.
"How much of this did you plan?""
He didn't answer.
And that was the answer.
Then he said something I never expected.
Something that made me sit completely still.
"Elena, I didn't marry you to steal your money.""
A pause.
"I married you because my mother told me you were the only person who could save us.""
My heart stopped.
"Save you from what?""
Daniel's voice became almost a whisper.
"From the person who was really destroying the company.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
"Who?""
The line went silent.
Then Daniel said:
"You need to come back inside.""
"Why?""
"Because she knows you found the files.""
I frowned.
"Who?""
And then I heard it.
A sound behind me.
A woman's voice.
Close.
Too close.
"Because I wanted to see how long it would take you.""
I slowly turned around.
May you like
Lorraine Mercer stood in the darkness outside the hotel.
And she was smiling.
