Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Lie
Lorraine Mercer stood beneath the hotel lights, perfectly composed.
That was the part that unsettled me the most.
Not her anger.
Not her accusation.
Her calm.
A woman who had just been exposed should have looked frightened.
She should have looked desperate.
Instead, she looked like someone who had been waiting for this exact moment.
I slowly lowered my phone.
"How long have you been standing there?""
Lorraine smiled.
"Long enough.""
The night air suddenly felt colder.
"You heard everything?""
She stepped closer.
"I heard enough.""
I looked at the hotel doors behind her.
"Where's Daniel?""
Her smile faded slightly.
"Still trying to decide whether he wants to be a man or a child.""
I stared at her.
"That sounds like something a mother would say about a son she raised.""
Her expression hardened.
"Careful, Elena.""
There it was.
The same warning.
The same tone she had used when she handed me that silver tray.
A reminder that she believed she had power over me.
But she didn't understand something.
Power only works when people are afraid to lose something.
And I had already lost everything I thought I had.
"I watched the video," I said.
For the first time, Lorraine's face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
"You weren't supposed to find that.""
I laughed quietly.
"That's your response?""
"What do you want me to say?""
"The truth would be a good start.""
She looked away.
"Truth is complicated.""
"No.""
I stepped closer.
"Truth is simple.""
My voice shook, but I didn't let it break.
"You and Daniel planned to use me.""
Lorraine sighed.
"You make it sound so cruel.""
I stared at her.
"Because it is.""
"No, Elena.""
She folded her arms.
"You don't understand the situation.""
"Then explain.""
She was silent.
Again.
I was beginning to understand something about the Mercer family.
Their favorite weapon wasn't lying.
It was making people feel guilty for asking questions.
Lorraine looked at my wedding dress.
At my ruined makeup.
At the woman standing in front of her who was no longer willing to play the role she had assigned.
"You really think Daniel is the villain here?""
The question surprised me.
Because I expected denial.
Not that.
I narrowed my eyes.
"What are you saying?""
"I'm saying you saw one conversation.""
"A conversation where your son admitted he planned to take my money.""
"A conversation where Daniel was scared.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
"You don't know what happened before that.""
"Then tell me.""
She looked toward the hotel.
For a moment, she seemed tired.
Not guilty.
Tired.
"The Mercer family was built on debt.""
I didn't answer.
"Daniel's father left behind a company that looked successful from the outside. But behind closed doors, it was falling apart.""
I crossed my arms.
"And?""
"And Daniel spent years trying to save it.""
"With my money.""
"With your investment.""
The correction made my stomach turn.
"Interesting choice of words.""
Lorraine ignored that.
"When you met Daniel, he was drowning.""
I remembered.
I remembered the first time I saw him.
A small office.
Old furniture.
A man who stayed late every night because he believed he could build something.
At least, that's what I thought.
"He told me he loved me.""
Lorraine's expression changed.
"He did.""
The answer surprised me.
"What?""
She looked directly at me.
"Daniel did love you.""
I almost laughed.
"That's supposed to make me feel better?""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"It is supposed to make you understand.""
"Understand what?""
"That people can love someone and still make terrible choices.""
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because part of me hated that they sounded true.
Daniel's betrayal didn't erase every good memory.
It didn't erase every morning coffee.
Every late-night conversation.
Every time he held my hand when I was exhausted.
That was what made betrayal so painful.
If someone was always cruel, leaving was easy.
The hardest people to leave were the ones who mixed kindness with damage.
I looked at Lorraine.
"But you didn't love me.""
Her silence confirmed it.
"You saw me as an opportunity.""
She didn't deny it.
"I saw you as someone who could change Daniel's future.""
"That's not love.""
"No.""
Her voice was quiet.
"It isn't.""
For one second, I saw something human in her.
Then it disappeared.
"You have to understand something, Elena.""
"What?""
"You were never supposed to find those documents.""
I looked at her.
"Because you thought I was stupid?""
"No.""
"Then why?""
"Because Daniel was supposed to fix everything before you ever noticed.""
My heart sank.
"Fix everything?""
She looked toward the hotel.
"He was supposed to pay back what was taken.""
Taken.
Not borrowed.
Not lost.
Taken.
"What was taken?""
Lorraine didn't answer.
And suddenly, I understood.
There was a larger story.
A deeper betrayal.
The files weren't just evidence of Daniel trying to steal from me.
They were evidence of something else.
Something even Daniel feared.
My phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
From Daniel.
*Don't trust my mother. Please. Come inside. We need to talk.*
I showed Lorraine the screen.
"Funny.""
"What?""
"Both of you keep telling me not to trust the other person.""
Her face remained calm.
"Because one of us is telling the truth.""
"And how do I know which one?""
She looked at me.
"You don't.""
That answer surprised me.
Because it was honest.
For the first time all night, Lorraine gave me something close to honesty.
Then she said:
"But you can find out.""
I watched her carefully.
"How?""
"Ask Daniel what happened three years ago.""
My eyebrows pulled together.
"Three years ago?""
She nodded.
"The night he almost lost everything.""
I felt a strange pull in my memory.
Three years ago.
That was when Daniel's company had suddenly recovered.
The period everyone called a miracle.
The time when investors returned.
The time when Daniel stopped waking up at 3 a.m. worrying.
The time when he proposed.
I had always believed those events were connected.
I just never knew how.
"What happened that night?""
Lorraine looked at me.
"Ask him who he made a deal with.""
Before I could respond, the hotel doors opened.
Daniel stepped outside.
His eyes immediately went to me.
Then to his mother.
"What are you doing here?""
Lorraine smiled.
"I was talking to Elena.""
Daniel's face tightened.
"About what?""
"About the truth.""
Something passed between them.
A silent conversation.
A warning.
A history.
I looked between them.
"You both know something.""
Neither answered.
I walked toward Daniel.
"Three years ago.""
His face changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
"What happened?""
He looked away.
"Elena.""
"No.""
My voice was firm.
"Not this time.""
I held up the flash drive.
"No more half-truths.""
Daniel swallowed.
"Where did you hear about that?""
"Your mother.""
His eyes immediately turned toward Lorraine.
"You told her?""
"I told her to ask.""
Daniel looked angry.
Not at me.
At her.
That told me more than words could.
"Daniel.""
He closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked exhausted.
Then he whispered:
"Three years ago, I found out my father didn't build this company alone.""
I waited.
"He had a partner.""
"Who?""
Daniel looked at me.
And the fear in his eyes returned.
"Your father.""
The world went quiet.
My father.
I stared at him.
"What?""
"Your father and mine worked together years ago.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"My father never mentioned him.""
"Because he didn't want you to know.""
"Why?""
Daniel looked at the flash drive.
"Because the deal between them is the reason we met.""
I felt like the ground moved beneath me.
"Are you saying our relationship was planned?""
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
And that was enough.
My voice became smaller.
"Daniel.""
He looked at me.
"Was I ever just a person to you?""
His face broke.
"Elena...""
But I needed the answer.
Not an apology.
Not another explanation.
The truth.
Finally, he whispered:
"The first time I met you...""
He stopped.
A tear formed in his eyes.
"The first time I met you wasn't an accident.""
My breath caught.
Before I could ask anything else, a black SUV pulled into the hotel driveway.
The doors opened.
A man stepped out.
Older.
Powerful.
Familiar.
Daniel went completely still.
Lorraine's expression changed.
And I knew immediately.
This person wasn't here for the wedding.
He was here because the secret had finally come out.
Daniel whispered his name.
"Richard Hale.""
The man walked toward us.
May you like
And in his hand was a folder.
A folder with my name written across the front.
