Chapter 8: The Child Who Was Never Supposed To Exist
The room went silent after Rebecca spoke.
Not the kind of silence that happens when people don’t know what to say.
The kind of silence that happens when something impossible has just been placed in front of you.
I stared at the photograph in Rebecca’s hand.
The hospital room.
The newborn baby.
Emily.
The woman beside her.
My mind searched for something familiar.
A mistake.
A reason.
Anything.
But there was nothing.
Only confusion.
“Give me that.””
My voice was low.
Rebecca didn’t move.
“You deserve to know the truth.””
“I said give me the folder.””
She looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“You think I’m your enemy.””
“A woman who breaks into my house and says she’s taking my daughter is not exactly making a good argument.””
A flicker of sadness crossed her face.
“I didn’t come here to take her.””
“Then why did you say you would?””
“Because I needed you to listen.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Rebecca, stop.””
Rebecca looked at her.
“You don’t get to tell me to stop.””
“You’re frightening Lily.””
That made Rebecca pause.
For the first time, she looked at my daughter.
Really looked.
And something changed.
Her anger disappeared.
She looked almost guilty.
“I’m sorry.””
Lily stayed behind me.
I noticed something strange.
She wasn’t looking at Rebecca like she was a stranger.
She was looking at her like she was trying to remember something.
“Lily,” I whispered.
She grabbed my hand.
“Daddy.””
“What?””
Her eyes stayed on Rebecca.
“I’ve seen her before.””
My blood went cold.
Rebecca’s face changed.
“Where?””
Lily shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Claire looked at me.
“Mark…”
Nobody spoke.
Then Rebecca slowly lowered the folder.
“She remembers.””
I turned toward her.
“What does that mean?””
Rebecca looked at Lily.
“It means Emily was right.””
“About what?””
“That children remember more than adults think.””
I felt anger rising.
“Stop speaking in riddles.””
Rebecca sighed.
“Seven years ago, Emily discovered something about Lily’s birth.””
“She was my daughter.””
“Yes.””
The answer came immediately.
Too immediately.
Rebecca stepped closer.
“She was your daughter because Emily raised her. Because you loved her. Because blood is not what makes a family.””
Her eyes moved toward Lily.
“But someone else wanted her because of what she represented.””
“What?””
Rebecca looked at the folder.
“A connection.””
I stared.
“Between who?””
Rebecca didn’t answer.
Claire did.
“Between our families.””
I turned toward her.
“What?””
Claire looked terrified.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“You knew something.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
The admission hurt more than I expected.
“Tell me.””
Claire swallowed.
“Years ago, my mother was involved in something illegal.””
“Identity changes?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Claire looked at Lily.
“She helped people disappear.””
I waited.
“Why?””
“Money.””
“That’s it?””
“No.””
Her voice became quieter.
“Power.””
Rebecca nodded.
“She collected secrets.””
I looked between them.
“And Lily?””
Rebecca opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Medical records.
Photographs.
Reports.
She pulled out one page.
“This is the first thing Emily discovered.””
I took it.
The page was old.
The ink was faded.
But one line was clear.
*Subject: Elizabeth Marie Hayes*
My daughter’s name.
Below it were notes.
I read slowly.
*Unusual circumstances surrounding birth records. Potential identity alteration.*
My hands shook.
“This is nonsense.””
Rebecca looked at me.
I did.
The next page showed a hospital record.
The mother’s name was blurred.
The father’s name was missing.
But one section was highlighted.
*Emergency transfer requested by Emily Hayes.*
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Rebecca answered quietly.
“The night Lily was born, Emily wasn’t just giving birth.””
I froze.
“What?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“She was protecting someone.””
I looked at her.
“Who?””
Rebecca’s voice was barely a whisper.
“Me.””
Everything stopped.
“What?””
She looked at the photograph.
“That baby wasn’t connected to me because of blood.””
She pointed at Lily.
“She was connected because of what Emily discovered.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t understand.””
Rebecca took a breath.
“Seven years ago, my daughter was supposed to disappear.””
My eyes moved toward Claire.
“Your daughter?””
Rebecca nodded.
“Claire.””
Claire looked away.
“She wasn’t supposed to survive.””
The room became painfully quiet.
I looked at Claire.
“You’re saying…”
Rebecca nodded.
“The real Claire Whitmore was supposed to be erased.””
I stared at her.
“Then who is she?””
Rebecca looked at Claire.
And Claire answered herself.
“My name is Claire Whitmore.””
I frowned.
“But you just said—”
“I am.””
She took a shaky breath.
“But there was another person using my identity.””
The pieces began moving.
Slowly.
Painfully.
“So the woman in the video…”
“The woman who looks like me.””
Claire nodded.
“That woman is the person who stole my life.””
Rebecca looked at the folder.
“And Emily found her.””
I looked at the photograph again.
Emily.
A baby.
A woman who looked like Claire.
A secret.
“What does Lily have to do with this?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Rebecca said:
“Lily was the only witness.””
My heart stopped.
“Witness to what?””
Claire looked at me.
“The night Emily died.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“She was there.””
“Lily was seven months old.””
“I know.””
“She couldn’t remember.””
Rebecca’s expression was painful.
“She remembered one thing.””
“What?””
Claire whispered:
“A face.””
I felt sick.
“What face?””
Rebecca looked at the stairs.
At Lily.
“The face of the person who caused the accident.””
My entire body went still.
I turned toward my daughter.
“Lily…”
She looked at me.
Tears were running down her cheeks.
“I don’t like talking about it.””
I knelt beside her.
“What do you remember?””
She shook her head.
“Nothing.””
“Sweetheart.””
“I only remember Mommy crying.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
She looked down.
“She was holding me.””
The room disappeared.
“She kept saying…”
Lily’s voice trembled.
“‘Don’t look, baby. Don’t look.’”
I closed my eyes.
Emily.
My Emily.
Trying to protect our daughter in her final moments.
“What else?””
Lily wiped her tears.
“She said a name.””
My heart pounded.
“What name?””
She looked at Rebecca.
Then Claire.
Then whispered:
“Victoria.””
Rebecca’s face changed.
Completely.
Not fear.
Shock.
Because that name meant something.
“Victoria?””
Rebecca stepped backward.
“No.””
Claire looked at her.
“Mom?””
The word barely left her mouth.
Rebecca froze.
My body went cold.
Because I understood.
Victoria.
The woman behind everything.
The woman Emily was investigating.
The woman Claire said was connected to her past.
Was alive.
And standing in this room.
Or at least…
Someone knew her.
Then Rebecca’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face drained.
“What is it?”” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
She just handed me the phone.
A message appeared.
One sentence.
*“You were always terrible at protecting your secrets, Rebecca.””*
A second message arrived.
Then a photograph.
A live photograph.
Taken moments ago.
From outside my house.
It showed all of us standing in the living room.
But that wasn’t the terrifying part.
The terrifying part was the person standing behind the camera.
Because in the reflection of the window…
I saw her.
The woman who looked exactly like Claire.

And beneath the picture was a message:
*“Ask Claire why she helped me kill Emily.””*
