Amused

Chapter 5: The Message From A Dead Woman

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

I just stood there.

Holding a piece of paper with my dead wife’s handwriting on it.

My brain rejected what my eyes were seeing.

Because that wasn’t possible.

Emily had been gone for seven years.

Seven years since the phone call.

Seven years since the hospital room.

Seven years since I held her hand and promised her I would protect Lily.

Seven years since I watched them lower her coffin into the ground.

Dead people didn’t write letters.

Dead people didn’t leave messages.

Dead people didn’t know what would happen years later.

But the handwriting was hers.

Every curve.

Every letter.

Every tiny habit.

The way she crossed her T’s.

The way she pressed harder on certain words.

I knew it.

I knew my wife’s handwriting.

“Mark.””

Daniel’s voice sounded distant.

“Open it.””

I looked at him.

“What if it’s not from her?””

He didn’t answer.

Because we both knew.

It was.

My fingers shook as I opened the folded paper.

The first line made my chest tighten.

*My beautiful Lily,*

I stopped.

Not because I was confused.

Because Emily always called our daughter that.

Not “sweetheart.””

Not “princess.””

Beautiful Lily.

It was something only she said.

I kept reading.

*If you are reading this, something happened that I hoped would never happen. I wanted to protect you from the truth for as long as I could.*

I swallowed.

Daniel leaned closer.

The room was silent except for the sound of my breathing.

*You may not remember me writing this. You were too young. But your father will know my handwriting. He will know this is real.*

My eyes burned.

She had written this for Lily.

But somehow, she knew I would find it.

**Lily, there is something you need to know. Your father loves you more than anything in this world. He always has.

He always will. No matter what anyone tells you, never doubt that.**

I closed my eyes.

Because even after death, Emily was still trying to protect us.

Then I read the next sentence.

And everything changed.

*The woman who is pretending to be Claire is not Claire.*

My heart stopped.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked back at me.

Neither of us spoke.

I continued.

*The real Claire Whitmore disappeared nine years ago.*

My hand tightened around the paper.

Nine years.

Before I met her.

Before the engagement.

Before Lily knew her.

*I found out because I was researching someone connected to my own family history. I never expected to find her name. I never expected to find the woman standing so close to our lives.*

My heartbeat became louder.

Someone connected to Emily’s family?

What did that mean?

**Mark will want answers. He always does. He will try to understand everything. That is who he is.

But please, Mark, be careful. The truth is not just about Claire. It is about the person who brought her into our lives.**

I stopped reading.

“The person who brought her into our lives,” I repeated.

Daniel looked at me.

“Who?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.””

I looked back at the letter.

The next line was underlined.

*Do not trust the person who says they are trying to help you.*

A cold feeling moved through me.

Because suddenly, every person in my life felt unfamiliar.

I thought about Claire.

I thought about Daniel.

I thought about the unknown messages.

I thought about the woman in the mirror.

Then I heard something.

A sound downstairs.

The front door opening.

My body reacted before my mind did.

“Lily.””

I dropped the letter.

Daniel immediately stood.

“Mark.””

We ran.

The hallway was empty.

“Lily!””

No answer.

I rushed downstairs.

And there she was.

Standing near the front door.

But she wasn’t alone.

Claire was there.

Holding Lily’s hand.

My entire body went cold.

“What are you doing?””

Claire looked up.

For the first time all day, she looked genuinely shocked.

“Mark.””

I crossed the room.

“Let go of her.””

She immediately released Lily’s hand.

“I found her outside.””

I looked at my daughter.

“Are you okay?””

Lily nodded.

But she looked terrified.

I pulled her behind me.

“What happened?””

Claire raised her hands.

“I didn’t hurt her.””

“I didn’t ask that.””

Her face tightened.

“I came here because I needed to talk to you.””

“You came into my house?””

“I have a key.””

The words hit me.

A key.

Of course.

I had given her one months ago.

Because I trusted her.

Because I thought she was going to be my wife.

Now the thought made me feel sick.

“Why was Lily outside?””

Claire looked at her.

Then back at me.

“She left.””

“What?””

“She climbed out the window.””

I looked at Lily.

She immediately looked down.

“Lily?””

“I was scared.””

Her voice was tiny.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

Claire stepped forward.

“Because someone told her things.””

I looked at Claire.

“What does that mean?””

Claire’s expression changed.

“I found her holding a note.””

My stomach dropped.

“What note?””

Claire looked at me.

“The one from Emily.””

The room became silent.

I stared at her.

“How do you know about that?””

Claire froze.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

“How do you know there was a note?””

She didn’t answer.

“Claire.””

“I…”

She looked away.

And suddenly, I understood.

She knew.

She knew about Emily’s letter before she should have.

“How?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

My voice was sharper than I intended.

“You can explain right now.””

Lily moved closer to me.

Claire noticed.

And something painful crossed her face.

“I never wanted this.””

I laughed once.

A bitter sound.

“You never wanted what?””

“This.””

She gestured around.

“The lies. The fear. The secrets.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

She looked at me.

And for the first time since I met her…

She looked exhausted.

Not evil.

Not angry.

Just tired.

“Mark…”

“Who are you?””

The question hung between us.

Claire closed her eyes.

When she opened them again, tears were falling.

“My name is Claire.””

I frowned.

“That’s not an answer.””

“It is.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Because Emily wrote that you weren’t Claire.””

Her face changed.

The mention of Emily’s name broke something.

“She knew.””

My breath caught.

“You knew she knew?””

Claire looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“Yes.””

Daniel appeared behind me.

“Mark.””

I didn’t look away from Claire.

“How did Emily know?””

Claire whispered:

“Because she was the only person who ever found out the truth.””

“What truth?””

Claire looked toward the window.

Like she was deciding whether to run.

Then she said something I never expected.

“Emily wasn’t killed because of an accident.””

The room went still.

“What?””

Claire wiped her tears.

“She was investigating someone.””

“Who?””

Her eyes met mine.

And the fear I had seen earlier returned.

Not fear of being exposed.

Fear of what would happen next.

“She was investigating me.””

My chest tightened.

“You?””

Claire nodded slowly.

“But not because I hurt her.””

“Then why?””

She looked at Lily.

Then at the letter.

“Because Emily discovered that the woman who raised me…”

She stopped.

Her voice cracked.

“…was the same woman who destroyed her life.””

Before I could ask another question, a loud crash came from outside.

We all turned.

A car door slammed.

Daniel moved toward the window.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

“What?””

I walked beside him.

Across the street, a black SUV was parked.

The headlights were on.

A person stood beside it.

Watching our house.

Then the person lifted a phone.

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

*“Ask Claire what happened the night Emily died.””*

A second message followed.

*“She was there.””*

I looked at Claire.

She looked back at me.

And this time, she didn’t deny it.

May you like

She only whispered:

“I was.””
