Chapter 6: The Night Emily Disappeared

“I was there.””

Claire’s words stayed in the room long after she said them.

I wanted to misunderstand.

I wanted her to explain that she was there after the accident.

That she arrived later.

That she saw something from a distance.

Anything except what my mind was already telling me.

“You were there the night Emily died?””

My voice barely sounded like my own.

Claire looked down.

“Yes.””

Lily grabbed the back of my shirt.

I felt her small fingers tighten.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Mark…”

I raised my hand.

Not because I wanted him to stop.

Because I needed to hear this from her.

Not from another message.

Not from another video.

Not from another piece of evidence left by someone who knew exactly how to break my life apart.

“Tell me everything.””

Claire took a shaky breath.

“I didn’t know she was going to die.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I know.””

“Were you with her?””

“Yes.””

The word landed like a stone.

I looked away.

For seven years, I had pictured that night over and over.

Emily driving home.

Rain falling.

A sudden crash.

A phone call from a stranger.

A hospital room.

Her hand slipping from mine.

But now Claire was standing in front of me, telling me there was something I never knew.

Something that happened before the crash.

“What were you doing with my wife?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“She found me.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“She found out who I really was.””

Daniel looked at me.

I saw the same confusion in his face.

Claire continued.

“Before I met you, before I moved to this city, before I became part of your life…I was looking for answers about my own past.””

“Your past?””

She nodded.

“I grew up believing I was abandoned.””

The room became quieter.

“My mother disappeared when I was young. I was raised by relatives who refused to talk about her. Every time I asked questions, they told me to stop searching.””

She swallowed.

“But I kept searching.””

I crossed my arms.

“And you found Emily?””

“No.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Emily found me.””

Claire sat at the kitchen table.

For the first time since she arrived, she looked smaller.

Not like the confident woman who walked down the aisle.

Not like the woman who had controlled every conversation.

Just someone carrying years of fear.

“Seven years ago, I received a message from Emily.””

I froze.

“From Emily?””

Claire nodded.

“She asked to meet me.””

“Why?””

“She didn’t tell me at first.””

Claire looked at the floor.

“She only said she knew something about my mother.””

My heart started racing.

“What did she know?””

Claire looked at me.

“She knew my mother’s name.””

A silence followed.

“Who was your mother?””

Claire hesitated.

Then she said:

“Victoria Whitmore.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But the way Claire said it made me feel like it should.

“Who is that?””

Claire’s face changed.

“The woman who destroyed Emily’s family.””

I stared.

“What?””

“My mother was involved in something years ago.””

“Something?””

Claire looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“She was part of a group that changed identities for people.””

I frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

“They helped people disappear.””

The words sent a chill through me.

“Disappear?””

Claire nodded.

“New names. New documents. New lives.””

My mind went back to the photo.

The woman who looked like Claire.

The woman without the scar.

The woman in my house.

“Are you saying someone stole another person’s identity?””

Claire didn’t answer immediately.

That was an answer by itself.

“Mark…”

“No.””

I stepped away.

“No, I need you to say it.””

Claire looked at me.

“The woman you know as Claire Whitmore…”

Her voice shook.

“Isn’t the original Claire Whitmore.””

My stomach turned.

“Then who is she?””

Claire looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

The answer shocked me.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“Then why are you using her name?””

“Because she gave it to me.””

My confusion grew.

“What?””

Claire wiped her tears.

“When Emily found me, she told me something impossible.””

“What?””

“She said there were two women.””

She looked toward the stairs.

Toward Lily.

“One pretending to be Claire.””

“And?””

“One trying to stop her.””

I felt a cold wave move through me.

“The woman in the video.””

Claire nodded.

“That’s the woman Emily was afraid of.””

I walked into the living room.

I needed space.

Air.

Something that made sense.

Nothing did.

My wife had spent her final days investigating a mystery.

My fiancée was connected to that mystery.

My daughter had discovered something before any adult did.

And now I was supposed to believe there were two women with the same face.

It sounded impossible.

But so did everything else.

Daniel followed me.

“Mark.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Do you believe her?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know.

That was the worst part.

I had spent years believing I knew exactly who people were.

Emily.

Claire.

Everyone.

Now I realized how little I actually knew.

“She knew about the note.””

Daniel nodded.

“That bothers me.””

“It bothers me too.””

I turned back toward the kitchen.

Claire was talking quietly with Lily.

My daughter wasn’t hiding anymore.

That confused me.

Because if Claire was dangerous…

Why did Lily still look at her like she was trying to understand her?

I walked back.

“What happened after Emily met you?””

Claire looked at me.

“She tried to help me.””

“Help you?””

“She believed my identity had been stolen.””

“By who?””

Claire’s expression darkened.

“My mother.””

I waited.

“And the woman who became my mother’s partner.””

“Who?””

Claire looked toward the window.

At the black SUV still parked outside.

“She’s the reason Emily died.””

The room went silent.

I looked at the vehicle.

“You know who that is?””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Her lips trembled.

“She’s the real person behind all of this.””

“Name.””

Claire looked at me.

And whispered:

“Rebecca Hale.””

The name meant nothing.

Until Daniel suddenly went pale.

“Wait.””

We turned.

Daniel stared at Claire.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Mark…”

“What?””

He slowly reached for his phone.

“I know that name.””

My chest tightened.

“From where?””

Daniel opened a file.

A file from the security footage.

The footage of Claire entering Emily’s room.

He zoomed in on the paper the other woman held.

The one we thought said Emily’s name.

But now, with the image enhanced, there was more.

A signature at the bottom.

Daniel turned the screen toward us.

The signature was clear.

*Rebecca Hale.*

My hands went cold.

“Why would Rebecca Hale have a document about Emily?””

Nobody answered.

Then Claire whispered:

“Because she wasn’t investigating Emily.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

Claire’s eyes filled with fear.

“She was investigating Lily.””

My heart stopped.

“What did you say?””

Claire stepped closer.

“Emily discovered something about Lily’s birth.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Mark—”

“No.””

My voice rose.

“Lily is my daughter.””

Claire nodded.

“I know.””

“Emily was her mother.””

“I know.””

“Then what are you saying?””

Claire looked toward the stairs.

And when she spoke, her voice was barely audible.

“I’m saying Rebecca Hale believed Lily was the last piece of evidence Emily left behind.””

The lights suddenly went out.

The entire house fell into darkness.

Lily screamed.

I grabbed her immediately.

“Everyone stay where you are.””

Daniel’s phone flashlight turned on.

Then we heard it.

A sound from upstairs.

A door opening.

Slowly.

Someone was inside the house.

May you like

Claire whispered one sentence:

“She found us.””
